  • Patent number: 10467285
Abstract: A method of recommending radio stations including the step of generating a plurality of driver models. Each driver model may correspond to a different driver and documents audio content listened to by that driver while driving. The plurality of driver models may be aggregated to generate a recommendation model correlating radio stations, audio content, and geographic regions. Thereafter, a request for recommendations may be received from a driver while the driver is in a familiar or unfamiliar geographic region. A driver model corresponding to the driver may be compared against other data contained within the recommendation model in order to identify one or more radio stations that present audio content within the geographic region that best matches the audio content documented within the driver model corresponding to the driver. The one or more radio stations may then be communicated to the driver.

  • Patent number: 10027431
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for receiving radio broadcast signals by means of a radio broadcast receiver and to a radio broadcast receiver designed for performing the method, wherein the broadcast receiver has at least two receiving units for different transmission techniques. The user selects a radio broadcast service of a first receiving unit of the at least two receiving units, and the selected radio broadcast service is then played back by the radio broadcast receiver. The other, second receiving unit for the different transmission technique of the radio broadcast receiver searches for an alternative radio broadcast service having preferably the same or comparable content during the playback of the radio broadcast service selected by the user, and the radio broadcast receiver automatically switches over to the second receiving unit having the alternative radio broadcast service if the first receiving unit cannot play back the selected radio broadcast service.

Abstract: A history of user listening patterns associating geographic locations with media stations is stored and used to aid in selecting a media station. If a media station associated with a current geographical location is available, that station can be automatically tuned by a wireless media receiver. If a media station associated with the current location is not available, an alternate media station that is available at the current geographical location can be selected, and the receiver tuned to the alternate station. The alternate station can be an over-the-air (OTA) station or an Internet Protocol (IP) station. A user can be allowed to select between alternate stations having comparable content, or the user can designate a default alternate station. User listening patterns can be used to determine whether a media station is associated a particular geographic location.

In addition, a set of channels is iteratively scanned by collecting samples for each channel and for each iteration of the scanning. Here, iterations of the scanning progressively removes channels from the set of channels based on the collected samples and updates states of the channels in the set based on the collected samples to obtain a set of candidate channels. In response to detecting a pre-determined condition, communications on the particular channel are precluded and at least one of the candidate channels is evaluated by collecting additional samples on each of the channels. Further, at least one of the candidate channels is selected based on the evaluation for utilization by the one or more secondary receivers for data communication.

  • Patent number: 8131236
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of selecting sound contents transmitted by transmission channels and received by an audio or audiovisual receiver. A user first selects a received content and starts playback. Then, the receiver automatically searches among the contents transmitted by the transmission channels for a content whose audio parameters have values close to the values of a previously selected content and plays it back at the end of the current content. The operation is renewed each time the current content ends. According to a refinement, the receiver has a memory that makes it possible to offset the playback of the content in time and thus best synchronize the playback of the various selected contents. The invention also relates to an appliance capable of selecting audio contents originating from several channels and having similar audio characteristics, and playing them back automatically.

Abstract: A communication system is disclosed that uses a received wireless signal combined with stored location data about the received signal to determine a location of the communication system or a component of the communication system. The communication system can include a receiver, a processor, and a memory. The processor is adapted to detect identification information in the received wireless signal, search the memory for identification data that matches the detected identification information, and retrieve location data associated with the matching identification information, thereby determining a general location or geographic region in which the receiver is located.

Abstract: An IC chip allows first communication for performing communication with all of the other IC chips, and second communication for performing communication while restricting communication parties. That is to say, the IC chip performs sending/receiving signals with a new communication arrangement with both the first communication which is a broadcasting arrangement and the second communication which is a communicatory arrangement. This enables the function upgrading electronic equipment to be performed easily, and enables flexible signal processing with a new communication arrangement.

Abstract: A frequency synthesizer includes: a frequency source generating a reference signal that includes a plurality of pulses having periodicity based on a reference frequency; a feedback loop that includes, a phase detector circuit, a loop filter, a controlled oscillator that generates an output signal at an output, and a loop divide circuit; a non-linear circuit element at an input of the phase detector circuit, which generates intermodulation distortion that causes at least one spurious signal at the output; and a controller controlling the loop divide circuit and the non-linear circuit element. The frequency synthesizer further includes a dither circuit that adjusts the timing of some of the pulses of the reference signal based on a parameter provided by the controller to the non-linear circuit element, thereby, providing a jittered reference signal to the non-linear circuit element for attenuating the at least one spurious signal at the output.

  • Patent number: 7801497
Abstract: A radio modulator and method with a radio band scan function. The apparatus consists of a frequency selectable RF signal transmitter, a switch that couples the RF signal to an antenna, and a demodulator coupled to mix a received antenna signal with the RF signal to produce an indicia of signal strength at the receive frequency resulting from that mix. A channel memory is coupled to store plural indicia of signal strength values corresponding to plural receive frequencies. A controller is coupled to the transmitter, the switch, the channel memory, and a display. In operation, the controller enables the frequency scan function by decoupling the switch, tuning the transmitter RF signal to plural frequencies, which causes the demodulator to receive plural receive frequencies within the radio band.

  • Patent number: 7706838
Abstract: The interactive authentication system allows a consumer to interact with a base station, such as broadcast media (e.g., television and radio) or PC, to receive coupons, special sales offers, and other information with an electronic card. The electronic card can also be used to transmit a signal that can be received by the base station to perform a wide variety of tasks. These tasks can include launching an application, authenticating a user at a website, and completing a sales transaction at a website (e.g., by filling out a form automatically). The interaction between the base station and the electronic card is accomplished by using the conventional sound system in the base station so that a special reader hardware need not be installed to interact with the electronic card. The user is equipped with an electronic card that can receive and transmit data via sound waves. In the various embodiments, the sound waves can be audible or ultrasonic (which can be slightly audible to some groups of people).
