Abstract: A scanning module within a non-AP station receives first scan parameter values for performing a first type of scan to obtain a first type of information, and receives second scan parameter values for performing a second type of scan to obtain a second type of information. From the first and second parameter values the scanning module determines combined scan parameter values that satisfy scan requirements for both types of scans. The combined scan parameter values are used to control a sequence of combined scans. A combined scan yields both the first and second type of information. In one example, an IEEE 802.11(n) non-AP station receives 20/40 coexistence scan parameters. The 20/40 parameters and locally-generated background scan parameters are used to determine parameters for performing combined background and 20/40 scans. Reducing the number of scans using combined scans has advantages including increasing data throughput, freeing processing resources, and reducing power consumption.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for automatically finding an AM radio program, by which an AM radio receiver is tuned through in discrete steps, such that, for each set AM frequency, the reception quality at the currently set AM frequency is determined, the field strength of the neighboring frequencies is measured. If a significant field strength is detected at the neighboring frequencies, these are taken into account in determining the overall reception quality, in that the reception quality is reduced by a noise value, and subsequently the overall reception quality is compared with an upper quality limit. If the upper quality limit is exceeded, the program search is interrupted, and the AM radio program with this high overall reception quality is played. This method succeeds in reducing the number of misjudgments of AM radio programs with actually poor quality, and thus improves the reproduction quality of an AM radio receiver.

  • Patent number: 7274918

Abstract: A method of tuning a station is disclosed, wherein a first pilot signal is applied on a circuit of the station and the resulting output power of the signal circuit is subsequently detected. A second pilot signal is then applied to the circuit and the resulting output power of the circuit is detected. The offset of the circuit is then tuned based on information of the resulting output power detected for the first and second signals. A station that is adapted to implement the method may be tuned by the manufacturer thereof or later after having already been taken into use. The tuning may occur automatically as response to a predefined event.

  • Patent number: 7043214
Abstract: Described is a communication system including wireless client devices. In the described system, the client devices may be wrist-worn watches such as are in common use today, except that the watches are specially configured to receive transmissions from broadcast towers. A client device is associated with one or more home service regions, and is configured to receive personal messages on a home channel when in the home service region. The client device employs a self-assignment method to identify and select a home channel without the need for interaction by a user. A tower discovery method is employed to identify broadcast towers and available channels within a service region. A failover method is employed to identify a change in the broadcast system, and take appropriate action such as, for example, changing to another broadcast tower, selecting another frequency, selecting a sleep mode, as well as others.

  • Patent number: 6823191
Abstract: Latency in receiving and detecting paging messages at a wireless terminal is reduced by employing a unique “super” paging time slot format. A paging super time slot includes a plurality of prescribed time slots. Each wireless terminal is associated with cyclically recurring super time slots. A super slot is associated with one or more wireless terminals. A base station always selects the first available time slot in a super time slot to transmit a paging message to a wireless terminal that is associated with the super time slot. Each wireless terminal monitors every time slot in the associated super time slot until either detecting reception of its associated paging message or detecting an empty time slot. In another embodiment of the invention, a unique partially overlapping super time slot format is employed in which a super time slot has at least one time slot common to its adjacent super time slots.

  • Patent number: 6819731
Abstract: The invention provides a method for searching the frequency range of a digital data receiving device, said method including the steps in one embodiment of firstly identifying and disregarding analogue carrier frequencies in the range, then proceeding to estimate the initial starting frequency for a digital carrier by dynamic real-time pre-processing of the spectrum profile and then obtaining successive samples of the frequency range from the start position for the carrier until the center frequency for the carrier is located. In one embodiment the method includes the prediction of the center frequency estimations of all digital carriers for respective channels in the range prior to the search commencing. The method reduces the possibility of locking to analogue carriers, and can reduce the time required to perform a search in comparison to the current digital carrier frequency “search & lock” procedure.
