  • Patent number: 11329622
Abstract: An element of an automatic gain control system that automatically calibrates a Composite Gain vs Ambient Noise look-up table responsive to user zone gain inputs at various ambient noise levels. The table is a graph of adjacent (horizontally or diagonally) data points (nodes) mapping ambient noise to composite gain. Three algorithmic rules determine position changes of the nodes responsive to zone gain inputs. A curve may be fit to an arrangement of adjacent nodes. The curve, or the interpolated table value, is used with an ambient noise input to determine the current composite gain. The element may be used with many traditional ANC systems. Once calibrated over the full range of ambient noises in the user's space, the ANC system may never need further user zone gain inputs.

  • Patent number: 7729673
Abstract: A method and apparatus provide multichannel signal limiting to prevent any channel signal within a multichannel signal from exceeding defined limits, while still preserving the gain and/or amplitude relationships among the individual channel signals. A limiter is configured to calculate a limiting factor as the value needed to prevent a limit violation on the worst-case one of the channel signals, and then commonly apply that limiting factor to the gain control of all channel signals. Thus, the limiter may generate an actual gain value for each channel signal as the product of that channel signal's desired gain value and the current value of the limiting factor. Notably, in multichannel audio signal applications, coordinating gain control across the individual audio channels by use of the commonly applied limiting factor prevents undesirable spatial shifting of the soundstage, e.g., shifting of the stereo image.

Abstract: A frequency manager automatically selects a clock frequency for each device or bus, or for a plurality of devices or buses, in a system, based on various factors and objectives. These factors and objectives can include optimizing performance of the devices without exceeding the system's power/thermal budget. The frequency manager can then control circuits that generate and provide clock signals having the selected frequency(ies) to these devices or buses. For example, in a system that is less than fully populated with devices, embodiments of the invention can select higher clock frequencies than a fully populated system would utilize. Some embodiments of the invention select higher clock frequencies for high-bandwidth devices than for low-bandwidth devices. Other embodiments use information about application programs that will be executed by systems, such as which devices these application programs will frequently access, to select higher clock frequencies for the frequently accessed devices.

Abstract: Cellular telephones, pagers, PDAs, and other wireless devices, are configured to network together when in close proximity with each other, measure the relative sound pressure level of their environment, and modify the auditory response of the wireless device based on established parameters. In this way, a wireless device may detect when it is in a quiet room with multiple other devices, which is indicative of a meeting that should not be disturbed, and thus defeat or modify its behavior to reduce interruptions of group events.

Abstract: A tuneable radio and method for automatically adjusting the seek sensitivity alignment for seek operations. The radio has a radio receiver for receiving broadcast radio wave signals, and a tuner adjustable for selecting from a plurality of radio wave signal channels. A detector detects signal strength of the received radio wave signals, and a seek input allows a user to initiate a seek operation to select a signal channel having a signal strength exceeding a seek sensitivity threshold. A controller calculates an average signal value and adjusts the seek sensitivity threshold based on the average value. The controller adjusts the seek sensitivity when it is determined that the radio has travelled beyond a minimum distance.

Abstract: A radio receiver having selection elements for selecting a radio program to be received and program memories storing information required for setting a radio program to be received is provided. The program memories are assigned to the respective selection elements, and a desired program memory may be called up by operating a desired selection element assigned to the desired program memory, independently of the broadcast method (e.g., analog VHF FM radio, analog MW, LW, SW AM radio, DAB, or DRM) of a program received prior to operation of the selection element. In this manner, the present invention enables the user's preferred radio programs to be distributed on the same station button level, e.g., on a first of several station button levels, to the station buttons available on this level, independently of the broadcast method of the preferred radio programs. As a result, the preferred radio programs may be called up independently of their broadcast method simply by operating one station button, i.e.

Abstract: Method and system for controlling operation of radiotelephone speaker volume and/or microphone gain. Using signals from one or more proximity sensors associated with the radiotelephone device, the device determines if a radiotelephone user is within a selected proximity zone for the device. If the user is within the proximity zone, the system adjusts the speaker volume control and/or the microphone gain control according to an estimated user-device distance. If the user is beyond the proximity zone, the system may adjust the speaker volume and/or microphone gain to its maximum value, may provide a notification that the user not within the proximity zone, or may disable the speaker and/or microphone. Several varieties of proximity sensors are used, individually and in combination.

  • Patent number: 6195565
Abstract: A data system, such as a computer network or a telecommunications system, has a base station and a number of nodes called network interface units (NIUs). Each NIU is assigned to one of a number of groups of NIUs. The base station transmits special data to the NIUs indicating which groups of NIUs are currently authorized to transmit upstream messages to the base station, where only the authorized NIUs are allowed to transmit upstream messages. When message collisions in the upstream direction becomes a problem, the base station can reduce the number of NIU groups that are authorized at any given time to transmit upstream messages, in order to attempt to reduce the rate of message collisions. In one possible embodiment, each NIU is assigned horizontal and vertical group words that identify to which group it is assigned. The special data contain additional horizontal and vertical code words that are monitored by the NIUs.

Abstract: A cable modem is configured to include a tuner having a front end which includes a duplex filter stage and a decoupler stage and a rear end which includes a single conversion tuner. The duplex filter stage couples the tuner to a network, a computer system and the front end decoupler stage. Signals received from the network are directed by the front end duplex filter stage to the front end decoupler stage while signals received from the computer system are directed by the front end duplex filter stage to the network. The front end decoupler stage passes RF signals received at an input thereof to an input of the single conversion tuner coupled to an output of the front end decoupler circuit. The single conversion tuner selects, from the plurality of RF signals received thereby, an RF signal to be converted into an IF signal for output therefrom while rejecting the remainder of the plurality of RF signals.
