  • Patent number: 10986489
Abstract: A more efficient over-the-air software push can be facilitated by a firmware over-the-air (FOTA) server device in communication with a home subscriber server (HSS). For example, the FOTA server can host the names of user equipment devices that are due for a FOTA update. When a user equipment device identification is received from the HSS, the FOTA server can then check the user equipment device identification against the names within the server. If the name is found, then the system can send discontinuous reception data to the user equipment device to modify a current discontinuous reception value of the user equipment device. Thus, the modified discontinuous reception value can prompt a long reception time of the user equipment device such that the user equipment device can receive the FOTA.

Abstract: A near field communications (NFC) device is disclosed that is capable of optimizing a gain for received signals. Measurements are made of signals received from an NFC environment and are compared to one or more threshold hold values. Based on the comparison, it is determined whether the measurements indicate underamplification or overamplification. Depending on the results of the analysis, one or more components within the NFC device is adjusted to increase or decrease the gain, respectively. The measurements may be taken during an unloaded baseline state or during loading, and may be compared to previous measurements to estimate their accuracy.

  • Publication number: 20150019465
Abstract: A media receiver identifies attributes of a media station to which the media receiver is currently tuned. The media receiver monitors the signal quality of the media station. If the signal quality of the media station drops below a quality threshold, the receiver chooses an alternate station having similar content, and then tunes to the alternate station until the signal quality of the original station improves. When the signal quality of the original station rises above a re-tune threshold, the receiver can switch back to the original station. The receiver can monitor and record user listening patterns, station-switching patterns, and situational parameters, to identify times or locations at which station switches occur. This information can be used to select appropriate alternative stations, to perform pre-emptive station switches, and to determine when a station's content will be buffered with the expectation that a station's signal will drop below the quality threshold.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are disclosed related to tuning a resonant frequency of an LC circuit. In some implementations, the LC circuit can be embodied in a low noise amplifier (LNA) of a receiver. The receiver can include a component configured to generate an indicator of received signal strength indication (RSSI) of a radio frequency (RF) signal received by the receiver. A control block can adjust the resonant frequency of the LC circuit based at least in part on the indicator of RSSI. As another example, the receiver can include an oscillator, such as a VCO, separate from the LC circuit that can be used to tune the resonant frequency of the LC circuit. Abstract: A system and method for assigning received channels to preset tuning keys of a receiver. A series of preset keys are sequentially labeled and one preset key, such as the preset key marked “0,” is a pre-defined preset key. An elongated pressing of the pre-defined key causes the currently tuned channel, if it is not assigned to a preset key, to be assigned to an unassigned preset key. If the currently tuned channel is already assigned to a preset key, pressing the pre-defined key instead causes the currently selected channel to be un-assigned from that preset key. Radios with two tuners that each process different sets of radio signals assign channels for a particular tuner to alternating preset keys, allowing acceleration of sequentially selecting channels assigned to pre-set keys by pre-tuning another tuner to the next channel in the sequence.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for automatically finding an AM radio program, by which an AM radio receiver is tuned through in discrete steps, such that, for each set AM frequency, the reception quality at the currently set AM frequency is determined, the field strength of the neighboring frequencies is measured. If a significant field strength is detected at the neighboring frequencies, these are taken into account in determining the overall reception quality, in that the reception quality is reduced by a noise value, and subsequently the overall reception quality is compared with an upper quality limit. If the upper quality limit is exceeded, the program search is interrupted, and the AM radio program with this high overall reception quality is played. This method succeeds in reducing the number of misjudgments of AM radio programs with actually poor quality, and thus improves the reproduction quality of an AM radio receiver.

  • Patent number: 7747232
Abstract: A method and apparatus for operating a radio reception system, which comprises a plurality of receivers assigned to a common output device, in which one of the receivers is designated as audio receiver and is tuned to a frequency of a radio transmitter, and outputs a signal received from the transmitter to the output device. At least one second receiver is designated as search receiver, and continuously searches its own reception frequency band for a frequency of the same transmitter. The system changes to a frequency of this transmitter, which was found by the search receiver, if the quality of the signal received by the audio receiver falls below a certain limit.

Abstract: Method and apparatus to determine the channel to which a TV tuner is tuned from a return loss ratio measurement circuit in a set top decoder. The method comprises generating a plurality of probe signals having frequencies spread throughput the TV channel band, preferably using harmonics of a zero order hold D/A converter. The return loss ratio of the reflected probe signals is then determined and stored as a signature for the TV channel and the signatures can subsequently be used along with new return loss ratio measurements to determine the TV channel to which a TV or VCR tuner is tuned.

Abstract: The invention relates to an RDS radio unit implementing a user friendly algorithm for automatic frequency change without inconveniencing the user with interruptions. A timer is used to delay the start of searches for a better frequency. The RDS radio unit comprises: a radio tuner (2) tunable to radio frequencies; a control unit (3) capable of controlling the radio tuner and monitoring received signal strength on a frequency to which the radio tuner is tuned, a memory (4) for receiving and storing a list of alternative frequencies; a timer (5) capable of timing a number of operations. The control unit is adapted to perform a search for a better channel frequency than an original frequency with a program matching the original frequency only when a first time T1 has elapsed, since the occurrence of an alternative frequency update request or a detection of received signal strength below a predetermined threshold.

  • Patent number: 7369826
Abstract: Many broadcast stations transmit their programs via a variety of different frequencies. The invention relates to monitoring alternative frequencies during the reception of a broadcast signal at a present frequency. Whenever the broadcast signal at an alternative frequency is checked, the receiver's gain is instantaneously switched from a present gain value corresponding to the present frequency to a second gain value corresponding to the alternative frequency. The second gain value is adapted to the supposed signal strength of the broadcast signal at the alternative frequency.

  • Patent number: 7274918
