The card receptacle (10) is pivotable between a first position (25) in which the telephone card cannot be inserted or removed from the card receptacle when the battery (20) is in the battery compartment (5) and a second position (30) in which the telephone card is insertable or removable from the card receptacle even when the battery (20) is in the battery compartment (5). A button (B) may be provided for activation of the pivoting of the card receptacle into the second position from the first position. The card receptacle (10) preferably locks in the first position (25) when put in the first position and may be unlocked from the first position (25) by operation of the button (B).

In order to miminize cost and increase versatility of the resulting wireless modem, the radio transceiver is a relatively unintelligent, protocol-agnostic, slave device that is controlled by commands issued by the baseband modem. The baseband modem may be a hardware modem or a software modem. In either case, the character of the baseband modem may be changed by downloading new software. The radio transceiver may also be exchanged for another within a family of radio transceivers, each of which customized for a particular radio standard. The result is an extremely flexible, extremely low-cost wireless modem solution.

Elastomeric blocks are bonded to the interior of the housing and the blocks have bonded threaded studs, which are used to shock mount the radio circuit board to the inside of the housing. This circuit board is treated with a conformal coating to improve its moisture resistance.

Direct connections between the various components of the integrated radio and directional antenna system enable reduced cost and ease of manufacture. In certain embodiments, the integrated directional antenna and radio system provides a direct RF connection between the directional antenna and the radio, and a printed wiring board (PWB) -mounted connector provides a direct digital connection between the radio board(s) and a medium access control (MAC) board. An input/output (I/O) interface provides a digital network interface between the MAC unit and indoor processing circuitry. The digital network interface enables packets of digital information to pass between the indoor processing circuitry and the integrated directional antenna and radio system.
