Patent number: 6516204Abstract: An inexpensive, PCMCIA-based radio transceiver is provided that interfaces to a separate baseband modem, which may itself be PCMCIA-based or may be an internal modem of a notebook computer. Together, the PCMCIA-based radio transceiver and the baseband modem realize a wireless modem. In order to miminize cost and increase versatility of the resulting wireless modem, the radio transceiver is a relatively unintelligent, protocol-agnostic, slave device that is controlled by commands issued by the baseband modem. The baseband modem may be a hardware modem or a software modem. In either case, the character of the baseband modem may be changed by downloading new software. The radio transceiver may also be exchanged for another within a family of radio transceivers, each of which customized for a particular radio standard. The result is an extremely flexible, extremely low-cost wireless modem solution.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 1996Date of Patent: February 4, 2003Assignee: Sierra Wireless, Inc.Inventors: Gregory John Funk, Ronald John Vanderhelm

Patent number: 6078266Abstract: An integrated circuit type car audio system can be operated at a general mode or an IC card mode. In the integrated circuit type car audio system, comparator compares a password number stored in the integrated circuit card which is loaded on said system with a reference password number. Mode select section generates a general mode select signal or an integrated circuit card mode signal to select a general mode or an integrated circuit card mode when the stored password number in the integrated circuit card and the reference password number coincide with each other. Controller receives any of the mode select signals selected by the mode select section and generates a mode execute control signal according to the one mode signal selected, and discriminates whether the integrated circuit card is a corresponding card for performing functions of the system based on the comparison result of the comparator.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1998Date of Patent: June 20, 2000Assignee: Daewoo Electronics Co., Ltd.Inventor: Jun-Hae Yang

Patent number: 6061579Abstract: A hand-held satellite mobile phone terminal contains an antenna deployment element with a small antenna attached to the tip area of the antenna deployment element The antenna deployment element is usually folded and stored on the rear side surface of the body of the hand-held satellite mobile phone terminal, and is deployed to become vertical to the rear side surface of the hand-held satellite mobile phone terminal body when it is used. The antenna deployment element is attached to the body of the hand-held satellite mobile phone terminal through a rotational axis so that the small antenna attached to the antenna deployment element can be rotated after deployment in order for its plane to become parallel with the ground surface. Also, the hand-held satellite mobile phone terminal is usable both in a satellite communication system and in a terrestrial cellular communication system.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1997Date of Patent: May 9, 2000Assignee: Advanced Space Communications Research LaboratoryInventors: Hiroyuki Arai, Hitoshi Hoshino, Yuichi Otsu, Takashi Miyoshi

Patent number: 6049288Abstract: A display can be retractably provided on an upper surface of an instrument panel. The display can be arranged such that it is not overlapped with an operation lever in a parking position P and a driving position D, to which the operation lever is frequently shifted during driving, in the course of eyeshot of the driver in a driver's seat. Hence, the operation lever never obstructs the driver's eyeshot looking at a screen of the display. As a result, the driver can easily monitor or watch the screen of the display without obstruction.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1998Date of Patent: April 11, 2000Assignee: Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.Inventor: Yoshiki Kawasaki
