  • Patent number: 9210546
Abstract: Providing location information on a mobile device includes receiving signals from external devices. Each signal includes information that specifies a geographic location for the external device that has provided the signal. A geographic location for the mobile device is calculated by using the information contained in each of the received signals. A representation of the geographic location of the mobile device is generated. The representation of the geographic location is included within an electronic message that provides information describing a user of the mobile device to other users of an electronic communications system. The electronic message is transmitted to another device to provide an indication of the geographic location for the user to one of the other users of the electronic communications system.

  • Patent number: 9198183
Abstract: In overview, the various embodiments describe methods for configuring a nodeB to recognize tuneaway events and to operate in a manner that mitigates the adverse effects of user equipment (UE) tuneaways on network capacity. In the various embodiments, the nodeB may detect that a UE is periodically tuning away based on the periodic, characteristic nature of the drops in the UE's signal strength. When the nodeB recognizes that a UE is performing periodic tuneaways, the nodeB may implement various resource management strategies while the UE is in a tuneaway gap to minimize the impact of the UE's tuneaway gaps and may resume normal resource management operations when the UE is not in a tuneaway gap. Thus, the various embodiments enable the nodeB to determine and manage the effects of a UE's tuneaway gaps, thereby increasing network capacity, optimizing power management, and enhancing the overall user experience.

In the method for controlling interference in a wireless system having multiple sending and receiving nodes, a plurality of receiving nodes share each other's channel information, each of the receiving nodes uses the shared channel information to calculate a precoding matrix which is fed back to the sending nodes, and each of the sending nodes uses each of the precoding matrices received as feedback to transmit a send signal to the receiving nodes, thereby controlling interference. Complete interference alignment can be achieved even by just sharing channel information between receiving nodes, and the invention can be employed not only for inter-cell interference but also for intra-cell interference environments.

  • Patent number: 9124439
Abstract: Data communications are selectively routed via an appropriate wireless access network including wireless cellular networks and wireless LAN, according to presence status of a mobile station. A network system tracks the presence status of the mobile station, which may relate to its availability and willingness to communicate via a particular type of wireless access network such as wireless LAN. With this kind of presence status information for a mobile station as guidance for traffic routing, inbound data communication can be routed to, and outbound data communication can be sent from, the mobile station, all via the desired access network. When applied to wireless LAN such as Wi-Fi network, this presence based routing mechanism can effectively reduce traffic burden over the wireless cellular network for the wireless carriers while lowering the cost of communication for the end users under usage based data plans.

  • Patent number: 9119077
Abstract: A method includes identifying a suspect node of a network. The method also includes initiating formation of a sub-network of the network by identifying neighbor nodes of the suspect node and sending an invitation message to a first neighbor node to invite the first neighbor node to the sub-network. The invitation message is encrypted using a first encryption key associated with the first neighbor node. The invitation message is not sent to a second node that is identified as a neighbor node only by the suspect node. The sub-network is configured to enable first communications between members of the sub-network. The first communications are communicated in a manner that is secured against access by the suspect node. Subsequent to formation of the sub-network, second communications between the suspect node and a device of the network are routed to or through at least one of the members of the sub-network.

  • Patent number: 9112962
Abstract: A method comprises the steps of establishing a call between a first user equipment and a second user equipment, acquiring the identity of the second user equipment, and providing the identity of the second user equipment to the first user equipment. The invention has the advantage that it enables a law enforcement agent (for example a police officer or investigator) to track the equipment that is used by a person for a particular call. When a suspect call is received, a law enforcement agent can easily return a call to that phone, even when the SIM card of that phone is swapped. When placing a call to a suspect number, the law enforcement officer can easily determine on which device the call is answered and then determine which other persons (MSISDNs) have been using that device.

  • Patent number: 9100982
Abstract: A method, system and medium are provided for automatically routing an incoming call to one active wireless-telecommunications device of a set of devices associated with a single wireless-telecommunications-network subscriber. A proximity-based relationship is created between a primary device and a nonprimary device. Upon receiving an indication that the primary device is within a threshold proximity of the nonprimary device, a request is communicated to the network to associate a set of user credentials of the primary device and a set of hardware credentials of the primary device with the nonprimary device. The nonprimary device is thereby activated so that it can receive an incoming call. The primary device is deactivated so that the subscriber can only receive an incoming call on one device at a time.

Abstract: The embodiments of the present invention relate to a method and a RBS to reduce the RNC load. This is achieved by letting the radio base station identify RRC connection requests and performing RRC connection rejects. In this way, excessive load of RRC requests done by typically Smart Phones can be rejected in a good way by the radio base station and therefore free up capacity in RNC, making it possible for RNC to execute useful traffic to a higher degree.

Abstract: A method for assigning a Voice Control Continuity (VCC) server to a User Equipment (UE) in a telecommunications network includes receiving an indication that the UE is registering with the network or attempting to make or receive an IMS communication session. A telephony network routing identifier and a VCC point code are assigned to the UE. The telephony network routing identifier is sent to the UE through the network and the VCC point code for the UE is sent through the network to the HLR to update the UE's profile data in the HLR.

Abstract: Interfaces may be created for applications on a network element without requiring the applications to include code specific for that type of interface. An Interface Management System (IMS) may be included to provide a media abstraction layer between applications and physical media to enable interfaces to be bound to applications without modifying the application to accommodate the interface and without modifying the interface to accommodate the application. The IMS also provides an environment to support distributed interface creation to enable interfaces to be created in a distributed fashion to avoid congestion in the IMS and to facilitate sparing of the IMS and interfaces. The interfaces communicate with applications and with each other through an IFID manager to streamline communications, and to enable the IMS to keep track of the interfaces that have been created on the network element.

Abstract: An idle mode UE can RACH to a cell different from the cell paging the UE. The UE can be allocated additional time to respond to all cells in the neighborhood to identify the cell in which to RACH. Interference cancellation can occur at different rates based on whether the UE is in connected mode or idle mode. The time to respond to the page can be a function of a paging cycle. Additionally, a variable bias may promote early handoff to lower power cells and late handoff to high power cells.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for using end nodes, e.g., wireless terminals, to discover base stations and communicate information about discovered access nodes, e.g., base stations, to other access nodes in a system are described. A message indicating an access node's inability to route a message to another access node which is known to a wireless terminal may trigger the wireless terminal to begin the process of updating access node routing and neighbor information.
