  • Publication number: 20140315578
Abstract: A method for estimating a location of an electronic device and an associated apparatus are provided, where the method includes the steps of: sending a pre-association broadcast request frame by the electronic device to multiple responders in a wireless network system; receiving a plurality of response frames corresponding to the pre-association broadcast request frame from the multiple responders; and performing a timing measurement according to information carried by the plurality of response frames for determining the location of the electronic device. For example, each of the response frames is sent from one of the responders, and each of the responders sends only one response frame corresponding to the pre-association broadcast request frame. As a result, the power consumption can be greatly decreased, and the related art problem of insufficiency of the total channel capacity of the wireless network system can be prevented.

  • Patent number: 8868108
Abstract: Server access is provided to a wireless apparatus via a wireless network. A message is received containing a service request. The service and sever capable of servicing the service request is determined. The service is requested from the server and a reply is received. The reply is formatted for communication over the wireless network and sent. Location dependent information may also be requested with a wireless apparatus including a global positioning device and a two-way wireless communication device. Such an apparatus can “know” its global location and therefore can request information dependent on that location. The apparatus receives signals from a global positioning system and calculates a location. The calculated location is included in the service request sent over the wireless network.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method for providing satellite assistance data to facilitate determination of the location of a mobile station, particularly for instance a mobile station served by a femtocell. When a positioning server receives a request for the location of a mobile station, the positioning server will determine from the request the mobile station is served by a femtocell and that the positioning server should query a femtocell server for seed data, or the positioning server may otherwise determine from the request that the positioning server should query the femtocell server for seed data. The seed data would preferably be geographic coordinates of a femtocell with which the mobile station is registered. • Patent number: 8843160
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a method, system and computer program product for wireless tower caching. In an embodiment of the invention, a method for wireless tower caching in a radio access network (RAN) can include receiving a response to a request from an end user device wirelessly coupled to a base station of the RAN, determining geographic positioning data for the response and identifying a most geographically wireless tower coupled to the RAN relative to the determined geographic positioning data (such as the closest wireless tower to the determined geographic positioning data). Thereafter, the response can be cached at a cache in a base station of the identified wireless tower. In this way, the cached content can remain relevant for a significant period of time in as much as the correlation between a likely position of the end user device and the content cached at the base station of the wireless tower at the time of use of the cached content is strong.

  • Patent number: 8843158
Abstract: The disclosed implementations provide a system and method of predicting routes for mobile devices using wireless networks, including generating and sending content to a mobile device that is travelling on a predetermined route (e.g., a bus route determined by a transportation agency). The mobile device can scan for a wireless network that is installed on a vehicle travelling on a predetermined route. The system can predict which predetermined route the mobile device is travelling on by accessing a database that associates wireless networks with transportation vehicles. The system can confirm whether the mobile device is travelling on a predetermined route based on the device's sensor measurements, timestamps collected over a period of time and the identity of the wireless network that is connected to the device. The system can send content to the mobile device based on the mobile device's location and predicted future locations along the predetermined route.

Abstract: An Internet protocol low noise block downconverter (IP LNB) assembly, which may be within a satellite reception assembly, may be operable to determine location information and/or time information of the IP LNB assembly, such as via a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) module in the IP LNB assembly. The IP LNB assembly may provide services based on the determined location information and/or the determined time information of the IP LNB assembly. The IP LNB assembly may communicate the determined location information and/or the determined time information to a wireless communication device for determining location information of the wireless communication device. The IP LNB assembly may determine location information of a wireless source device based on a signal received from the wireless source device, the determined location information and the determined time information of the IP LNB assembly.

Such a candidate position fix mode may, for example, be selected from a plurality of wireless signal-based positioning modes comprising at least: a first wireless signal-based positioning mode based on first wireless signals transmitted by a terrestrial-based transmitting device, a second wireless signal-based positioning mode based on second wireless signals transmitted a satellite-based transmitting device, and a third wireless signal-based positioning mode based on a combination of the first wireless signals and the second wireless signals. In certain example implementations, assistance data indicative of at least the candidate position fix mode may be transmitted to the mobile device.

Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for performing ranging operations (700) between two or more wireless devices (STA1 and STA2). For some embodiments, the ranging operation allows each of a pair of ranging devices to estimate timing errors associated with measuring the time of arrival (TOA) of received signals, and to remove such timing errors from the measured TOA values. TOA and time of departure (TOD) information may also be exchanged between the devices using measurement action frames defined by IEEE 802.11v standards. In addition, an iterative process (800) is disclosed that allows a sequence of measurement action frames exchanged between the ranging devices to refine the timing errors and thus also refine the round trip time (RTT) value of signals exchanged between the devices.
