Abstract: Techniques for positioning access points and terminals in WLANs and other wireless networks are described. For access point positioning, measurements are obtained for at least one access point in a WLAN. The measurements may be based on transmission sequences (e.g., beacon frames) transmitted periodically by each access point. The measurements may be made by multiple terminals at different locations or a single mobile terminal at different locations. The location of each access point is determined based on the measurements and known locations of the terminal(s). For terminal positioning, measurements for at least one access point in a WLAN are obtained. The location of the terminal is determined based on the measurements and known location of each access point. The measurements may be round trip time (RTT) measurements, observed time difference (OTD) measurements, time of arrival (TOA) measurements, signal strength measurements, signal quality measurements, etc.

Abstract: A system for locating a vehicle using a monitoring device attachable to a vehicle and a mobile device. The monitoring device plugs into a vehicle diagnostic port and transmits an indicator signal to the mobile device, such as a smart phone, when the vehicle's engine is shut down. Upon receipt of the indicator signal, the mobile device determines its current location and saves it as the vehicle's location. The vehicle's location may then be displayed to the user on the mobile device. Such a system may be used with any vehicle, and allows for vehicle location without requiring that the vehicle have its own location system, such as a GPS system. The user's location may also be determined on the mobile device, along with directional information for guiding the user to their vehicle.

Abstract: A dual position display is disclosed. Embodiments of the invention include simultaneously displaying at least two geographic locations for a single device. In some embodiments, a received position of the device is displayed, the received position being received from the on-line, real-time mapping system and being indicated on a map display by a first icon. In at least some embodiments, the current position of the device as indicated by the positioning receiver is also displayed, the current position of the device being indicated on the map display by a second icon displayed simultaneously with the first icon. In at least some embodiments, the map display continues to display the received position as a previous position that corresponds to a loss of communication of the positioning data between the device and the mapping system.

  • Patent number: 9002372
Abstract: Mentally challenged persons such as autistic children and Alzheimer's patients can become lost and they are hard to find because they have difficulty communicating or they are confused and disoriented. The present invention provides an apparatus, system and methods for locating lost persons (or animals or packages) whether they are indoors or outdoors. The apparatus comprises a cellular telephone unit which can be activated by a RF signal and which a child or patient can wear. The wearable unit can be activated by a caregiver's smart phone having a locating application installed therein. The locating application enables the caregiver to locate the lost person using radio direction finder triangulation when the lost person is within a few hundred feet of the caregiver. When the lost person is further away, the locating application employs cell phone tower triangulation or the wearable unit GPS/Assisted GPS application to determine an approximate location of the lost person.

Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention provides a system for detecting in-person meetings between users of mobile devices. During operation, the system collects information regarding characteristics of features of the users' surrounding environment as detected by the mobile devices. The characteristics of the detected features are compared with each other to produce observations and the observations are applied to a hidden Markov model to detect meetings between the users. Features detected from the surroundings may include Wi-Fi signals, discoverable Bluetooth signals, and ambient sounds.

Abstract: A wireless communication device capable of determining its location in an indoor environment is disclosed. In an indoor environment, a wireless communication device may have insufficient access to GNSS satellites or cellular towers to make an accurate determination as to its location. Therefore, the wireless communication device generates a fingerprint map of the environment by estimating its position and scanning multiple positions within the environment for accessible access points and characteristics. The device stores this information in memory, which it can later refer to for determining its current position.
