  • Patent number: 7509138
Abstract: A transmitting station performs closed loop power control prior to a transmission pause. A closed loop transmission power level prior to the pause is determined. A reference signal is received and a received power level of the reference signal prior to and during the transmission pause is determined. The measured reference signal received power levels are compared to a transmit power level of the reference signals to produce a pathloss estimate of the reference signal prior to and during the transmission pause. A new transmit power level is determined by adjusting the closed loop transmission power level by a change between the prior to and during pathloss estimates. A transmission power level of the transmitting station is set to the determined new transmit power level. A communication is transmitted at the set transmission power level.

Abstract: A method of employing multipath propagation in wireless radio communications uses an omnidirectional transmitting/receiving antenna at one end of a transmission link to send an interrogating signal across an environment subject to multipath disturbances to a phase-conjugating retrodirective antenna, and the retrodirective antenna returns a communication signal along the multiple pathways taken by the interrogating signal to the omnidirectional antenna despite the multipath disturbances. In a simplex communication mode, the retrodirective antenna sends a return signal mixed with a communication signal to the omnidirectional antenna. In a duplex communication mode, both an omnidirectional antenna and a phase-conjugating retrodirective antenna are operated in tandem at each end of the transmission link to provide effective two-way wireless radio transmissions.

  • Publication number: 20080188253
Abstract: A wireless communication system experience interference from other wireless communication networks. A method for designing wireless communication systems subject to interference is proposed based on a realistic interference model which accounts for the propagation effects introduced by the wireless environment (such as path loss, shadowing, and multipath fading), and for the spatial scattering of transmitters (using a Poisson field). The method accounts for tradeoffs between network parameters, such as signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), interference-to-noise ratio (INR), path loss exponent, spatial density of the interferers, and error probability. Advantages of this method include: 1) a unified framework for designing a wireless system, subject to cumulative interference and noise, incorporating a wide range of performance metrics; and 2) a general application that covers a broad class of wireless communication systems and channel fading distributions.

A combiner combines the equalized signals. By sharing one adapter for adapting the coefficients between two or more equalizers, the calculation load can be reduced. This is useful for small mobile terminals powered by battery, for use with GSM or UMTS or other radio networks. It can be applied to any type of equalizer, and using any manner of time sharing. The combiner can exploit any type of diversity between the equalized signals. Abstract: The goal of the invention is to keep the delay of a communication signal between a moving vehicle (mobile body) and a fixed base station constant. This is achieved by a Doppler compensation method for data to be transmitted within frames via radio transmission between a mobile body and some base station, both mobile body and base station comprise respectively a transceiver connected to an antenna for the radio transmission. The method comprises the step of determining the Doppler effect acting on the frames when transmitted as a signal through that radio transmission for a given speed and direction of motion of the mobile body with respect to the base station. It is then followed by the step to apply by the transceiver some sampling procedure comprising an allocation of different time delays to the signal, the different time delays being chosen following a law adapted to compensate the determined Doppler effect.

Abstract: Transmitting non-polluting dummy pilot signals in a wireless communication network permits estimation of the downlink propagation channels between a number of joint transmitters and a lesser number of receivers. With fewer receivers than transmitters, loop back information from the receivers is not sufficient to determine the downlink propagation channels between the transmitters and receivers. For N transmitters and M receivers, (N-M) dummy pilot symbols are transmitted to facilitate downlink channel estimation. Each dummy pilot signal is transmitted to an imagined or dummy receiver that is virtually located such that its downlink channel coefficient vector is orthogonal to those of the real receivers. Transmit pre-filtering based on estimated propagation channels is applied to the information signals for the real receivers and to the dummy pilot signals. The extent to which the dummy pilot signals interfere at each receiver is an indication of mismatch between estimated and actual propagation channels.

Abstract: A remote communications terminal accesses a terrestrial network or information source via a SATCOM link with an earth station hub linked to the network or information source. Information throughput adaptation (ITA) is employed on the SATCOM link to maximize information throughput over the SATCOM link while ensuring acceptable signal quality under varying rain fading conditions. Sufficient power margin is built into the SATCOM link such that, under severe rain fading conditions, the lowest system throughput rate still provides acceptable signal quality. Under lesser rain fading conditions, the data throughput rate is increased via more bandwidth efficient modulation and coding schemes permitted by the higher signal quality which results from greater power margin. The earth station hub and remote terminals monitor the signal quality and communicate to adaptively adjust the modulation and coding used on the forward and return links to maximize information throughput under varying rain fading conditions.

  • Patent number: 6999724
Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing the observed rate of change of the channel characteristics in a system with multiple antennas at a mobile terminal. The slowing down of the observed channel fluctuations is effectuated on the downlink by either calculating or receiving signals that have a similar Doppler shift, referred to herein as Doppler-compensatable signals, and processing one or more of the Doppler-compensatable signals to compensate for Doppler shift. The slowing down of the observed channel fluctuations is effectuated on the uplink by pre-compensating symbol streams with the Doppler shift associated with the direction in which they are transmitted, so that the observed Doppler shift of these signals when they are received is reduced or even eliminated.

  • Patent number: 6996380
Abstract: Coherent transmit macro-diversity involves transmitting simultaneous signals from one or more transmitters to one or more wireless receivers. Transmit signals are formed as weighted combinations of the individual information signals for each of the wireless receivers. By properly weighting these receiver-specific signals, the combined signals combine at each receiver to cancel all but the desired information signal for that receiver. This improves reception performance and allows multiple receivers to operate on the same communication channel in the same area if desired. The weighting factors used to form the combined signals are based on propagation path characteristics between each of the transmit antennas and each of the receivers. This information is generally referred organized as a channel estimate matrix and is used to filter the information signals such that they may be combined in the required weighted combinations.

  • Patent number: 6973326
Abstract: An enhanced closed-loop power control method includes the steps of: setting an initial value of a power control variable; detecting a strength of a terminal signal and comparing the detected strength with a reference Eb/No; transmitting a power control signal to a terminal according to the comparison result and the set power control variable value; and analyzing the power control signal transmitted to the terminal for a predetermined reference time period and resetting a power control variable. When the subscriber does not move in an area with a favorable radio reception sensitivity (that is, in a state that the Eb/No is a little changed) the base station sets the power control step-size lower than the current step-size and performs a fine power control. Thus, a flux of the transmission power can be prevented. And, since the number of puncturings performed per unit time is reduced, the data transmission efficiency can be heightened.

  • Patent number: 6957046
Abstract: A system for reducing multipath interference in a wireless data transmission generally includes a processor and memory device for capturing one or more data packets of the wireless data transmission. The transmitting device associates a time value and/or a spatial value to each of the data packets. Upon capture, the processor determines whether the captured data packet is reflective or non-reflective by comparing the time value or spatial value, as applicable, of the captured data packet to the time value or spatial value of each stored non-reflective packet. The system identifies the captured data packet as non-reflective, if the time value (or spatial value) of the captured packet is different from the time value (or spatial value) of each stored non-reflective packet.
