  • Patent number: 7110724
Abstract: A system and method for detecting compression of power amplifier circuitry in a wireless terminal and, in response, reducing the output power of the power amplifier circuitry such that linear operation is achieved. In general, the output power of the power amplifier is detected to provide a detect signal. The detect signal is sampled at two predetermined points in time. A ratio of the samples of the detect signal is compared to an expected ratio. Based on the comparison, a decision is made as to whether the power amplifier circuitry is in compression. If so, an adjustable power control signal controlling the output power of the power amplifier circuitry is reduced by one power step, such that the output power of the power amplifier circuitry is reduced by one output power level. The process is repeated until the power amplifier circuitry returns to linear operation.

  • Patent number: 6760576
Abstract: In a variable rate wireless communication system, an explicit reduced-bit rate indicator is used to communicate the data rate and configuration of the transmission to the receiver. Data throughput is increased by reducing the number of bits required to indicate data rate and channel configuration. Related allocation of total transmit power, and related receive processing are conserved. Reception is enhanced by increased probability of correct decoding. Receiver performance is enhanced by reducing the probability of false erasures and associated outerloop setpoint adjustment errors when the receiver is notified of channels with zero data rates. Power consumption is reduced by using fewer bits to communicate data rate and channel configuration information, and by more accurate setpoint adjustment.

Abstract: A data compression program making a computer perform processing which enables compression of only highly compressible data. First, a transmitter-side device performs compression processing of a portion of data to be compressed. Next, the transmitter-side device compares volumes of the portion of the data before and after the compression processing, and determines whether or not the compression processing is effective. When the data to be compressed is uncompressed data, the volume of the portion of the data is reduced by the compression processing. On the other hand, when the data to be compressed is compressed data, the volume of the portion of the data is not reduced by the compression processing. Therefore, only when it is determined that the compression processing is effective, the transmitter-side device compresses the other portions of the data to be compressed.

Abstract: In an input signal power dynamic range compressing circuit, an input signal is distributed by a directional coupler to a linear signal transfer path and a compressing signal generating path, and in the compressing signal generating path a compressing signal, which keeps the peak-to-average-power ratio of the input signal below a predetermined value, is generated from the input signal. The compressing signal is combined by a power combiner with the input signal having passed through the linear signal transfer path.

Abstract: A communications link for data communication via satellite includes interface apparatus comprising a satellite link interface for connection to a satellite link and a PSTN interface for connection to a PSTN. The interface apparatus supports different data compression modes in the communication link. Mode A allows data compression over the PSTN but not over the satellite link. Mode B allows data compression over the PSTN and over the satellite link, but enables decompression and recompression of data flowing in each direction through the interface apparatus. Mode C allows compressed data to pass transparently between the PSTN and the satellite link, while the interface apparatus performs error correction on the satellite link and on the PSTN.

  • Patent number: 6192259
Abstract: When the user of a portable radio apparatus performs an operation for transmitting data outside a communication service area, the data to be transmitted is compressed in a compression section 6, and stored in a compressed data memory 13. When the user moves within the communication service area, the stored compressed data is automatically transmitted. On the other hand, when destination information for the transmitted data already exists, only the transmitted data is added to the destination information already registered, and transmitted in a batch. Alternatively, if the destination has a function for decompressing compressed data, the compressed transmitted data is transmitted in a batch, while, if the destination does not have the function for decompression compressed data, the compressed transmitted data is decompressed and transmitted.

Abstract: A telephony device includes a base station and a wireless handset. The base station has a responder with a memory. A processor of base station processes digital speech signals having a first code on signal lines connecting the input and output of the base station. The same processor also controls a converter which is located between the memory and the signal lines. Prior to storing in the memory, the converter codes the digital speech signals into a second code for storage in the memory, where the second code is the same code of the digital signals exchanged between the base station and the handset. Further, prior to reading from the memory, the converter decodes the digital speech signals of the second code stored in the memory into the first code.

Abstract: A Vehicle Information and Safety System (VISC) includes a main computer at a vehicle fleet headquarters (HQ) with access over a CDPD data network to a computerized sensor system mounted in each vehicle of the fleet. Sensors which may be used include load sensors coupled to the axles, accelerometers and temperature sensors coupled to the cargo bay, infrared andor pressure sensors monitoring the operator, cameras viewing the cargo bay, cab andor environment, and GPS data. The sensor data are processed by in-vehicle andor HQ computers, to monitor the state of the vehicle and operator, and the security status of the vehicle. PSAP (911) calls can be transmitted from the vehicle under remote control from the HQ for those cases in which the operator is unavailable or unresponsive, and the transmission can be tagged with GPS data. Speech signals from the operator are converted to text, and may be used for control of various functions, or may be data-compressed for transmission over the data network to HQ.

  • Patent number: 5930685
Abstract: An automatic link establishment (ALE) method of establishing a link between two or more HF radios or stations, and an apparatus using the same, are disclosed. The invention provides a transmission protocol that allows HF radios to rapidly exchange call data to enable the first radio and second radio to have knowledge of the frequency propagating characteristics used for communication. The method includes transmitting 24 bit words from the first station to the second station and vice-a-versa in the CALL. The words include a three bit preamble, at least about 3 bits of data to be transmitted from the second station to the first station, and a compressed representation of three characters of the address of at least one of the stations. The number of words transmitted during the CALL, RESPONSE and ACKNOWLEDGE are greatly reduced from the protocol defined in MIL-STD-188-141A Notice 2.
