Patent number: 7680510Abstract: A transceiver system for RF communications in a wireless network includes a transceiver having first and second receivers and a transmitter. The first receiver and transmitter are connected to first antenna section. The second receiver is switchable between connection to a second antenna section and connection to the first antenna section. In a dual diversity mode, the second receiver is connected to the second antenna section, and the two receivers are tuned to the same RF channel set. Thus, multi-path faded signals in the RF channel set are received at the two antenna sections. In a cross-connected mode, two of the transceivers are used together, with the second receiver in each being connected to the first antenna section. Each transceiver supports one antenna, and the receivers in each transceiver (as well as the transmitters) are respectively tuned to different RF channel sets. Thus, system capacity is doubled in conjunction with diversity reception.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 2005Date of Patent: March 16, 2010Assignee: Alcatel-Lucent USA Inc.Inventors: Michael A. Patent number: 7676198Abstract: A data transceiver module for digital data communications in a portable hand-held data terminal has multiple data spread spectrum modes which include direct sequence and frequency function modulation algorithms. The transceiver module has multiple user or program configurable data rates, modulation, channelization and process gain in order to maximize the performance of radio data transmissions and to maximize interference immunity. Various module housings, which may be PCMCIA type, are able to be mated with a suitably designed data terminal. Media access control protocols and interfaces of multiple nominal operational frequencies are utilized. Wireless access devices in a cell based network each consider a variety of factors when choosing one of a plurality of modes of wireless operation and associated operating parameters. Such selection defines a communication channel to support wireless data, message and communication exchanges.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 2003Date of Patent: March 9, 2010Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventor: Ronald L. Publication number: 20100041349Abstract: In an exemplary communication system, a multiplicity of mobile terminals are to share a communication link with a host processor communicating through base transceivers. The mobile terminals evaluate communication signals being transmitted to one or more of the mobile transceivers and according to the evaluation of such signals, each mobile terminal independently selects a relatively high data rate or a lower more conservative data rate for communication with the host processor. The mobile terminal enters a dormant state after a fixed period elapses during which the mobile unit is not engaged in communication with the base station. Periodically, the mobile terminal reenters active state in receive mode for a brief interval and if no polling signal or other message directed to the mobile terminal is present, the mobile terminal returns to dormant state.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 20, 2009Publication date: February 18, 2010Applicant: BROADCOM CORPORATIONInventors: Ronald L. Patent number: 7583954Abstract: The invention provides a wireless connection establishment method enabling determination of a transmission format while giving consideration to security when conducting a connection establishment needed to send and receive multimedia information between radio devices having a radio communication function. In the invention, a radio device control terminal requests an authentication server to conduct authentication with respect to radio devices requesting a connection and then an authentication process is performed by the authentication server. When the radio devices are authenticated properly, the radio device control terminal acquires each transmission format of the radio devices from an information management server to determine a radio transmission format common to these radio devices. The radio transmission format thus determined is sent to the radio devices, so that the radio devices establish a wireless connection with each other by use of the radio transmission format.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 2004Date of Patent: September 1, 2009Assignee: NEC CorporationInventor: Fumiyuki Inagaki

Patent number: 7437159Abstract: An apparatus and method for overcoming pilot pollution in a wireless communications network. The apparatus boosts a preferred pilot signal within a geographical area that is suffering from pilot pollution. The boosted pilot signal is stronger than the pollution in this area, and causes mobile stations to lock onto the boosted pilot signal rather than the pollution. A directional receiving antenna on the apparatus receives the preferred pilot signal from a selected base station. After amplifying the preferred pilot signal, the apparatus transmits the boosted pilot signal from an antenna within the geographical area. In this manner, mobile stations lock communicate with the selected base station when within the geographical area rather than the base station responsible for the pilot pollution. This may result in fewer dropped calls from the network and fewer inappropriate hand-offs.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 2001Date of Patent: October 14, 2008Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Mark L. Patent number: 7349718Abstract: A first housing 14 is provided with a first and a second terminals 11a, 11b to be connected with a first and a second external antennas. A second housing 13 is connected via a coaxial cable 9 with the first housing 14. The first housing 14 includes a switch 10 connected via a capacitor 3b with the coaxial cable, for selectively connecting one of the first and second terminals 11a, 11b which provides higher receipt sensitivity on the basis of a switching signal and a DC power supply 12 connected via an inductance 4b to the coaxial cable 9. The second housing 13 includes a radio circuit 2 connected via the capacitance 3a with the coaxial cable 9, for processing a radio signal to be transmitted, supplying the processed radio signals to the first or second internal antenna 7 or 8 and processing the received radio signal.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 2002Date of Patent: March 25, 2008Assignee: NEC CorporationInventor: Takashi Murakami

Patent number: 7343171Abstract: The invention concerns a method (300) and system (100) for interrupting a dispatch call. The method can be practiced in a dispatch communications system (100) having at least a first communications channel (162) for carrying voice traffic and a second communications channel (164) for carrying communications-enabling information. The method includes the steps of assigning (312) the first communications channel to at least a first caller (133) and a second caller (135) to permit the first and second callers to engage in a dispatch call and as the first caller has control over the first communications channel, transmitting (314) an interrupt message (505) over the second communications channel to inform the first caller of an interrupt status of the second caller. The transmitting step is performed without terminating the dispatch call.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 2004Date of Patent: March 11, 2008Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Faisal Saeed, Deepak P. Ahya

Patent number: 7336931Abstract: An electrical device comprises analog conversion circuitry having an input and an output. The electrical device is essentially provided for converting a first input signal within a first frequency range applied to the input to a first output signal within a second frequency range different from the first frequency range at the output. The electrical device further comprises a signal adding means for adding at least a portion of the first output signal as second input signal to the first input signal. The analog conversion circuitry is also capable of converting the second input signal, which is within the second frequency range, back to the first frequency range. Additionally, a characteristic deriving means is provided for deriving at least one characteristic of the electrical device from the frequency converted second input signal, which appears at the output of the analog conversion circuitry.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 2004Date of Patent: February 26, 2008Assignee: Interuniversitair Microelektronica Centrum (IMEC)Inventor: Jan Craninckx

Patent number: 7333830Abstract: Methods and apparatus for synchronizing Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) communication within a multi-mode radio. A multi-mode radio can support communication with a WLAN and at least one other wireless communication system. The multiple systems can be distinct and asynchronous. Transmitting, or attempting to transmit, over a WLAN communication link can result in interference that degrades the sensitivity of a receiver in another communication system, or that interferes with a transmission in another communication system. The WLAN transmissions can be synchronized to operation in another communication system by generating a signal that can be coupled to a collision avoidance system in the WLAN transmitter. The signal can operate to cause the WLAN transmitter to reschedule the transmission to another time such that the resources of the multi-mode radio are conserved and the WLAN interference is minimized.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2005Date of Patent: February 19, 2008Assignee: Quorum Systems, Inc.Inventor: Lawrence Jarrett Malone
