  • Patent number: 5360376
Abstract: A coupling device for transmitting torque between two rotating drive shaft segments. The coupling device includes a locking mechanism for preventing axial excursions of the drive shaft segments relative to one another when the drive shaft segments are coupled and transmitting torque. The coupling device, furthermore, provides a means for quick disconnect of the drive shaft segments when the transmission of torque is no longer desired and decoupling is preferred. The coupling device, additionally, includes a guide pin and sleeve arrangement for piloting the drive shaft segments during coupling. A drive system is also provided which includes a flexible coupling for accommodating axial and angular misalignment of the drive shaft segments relative to one another.

  • Patent number: 5275538
Abstract: A coolant pump system driven by an electric motor mounted in-line with the pump shaft to the pump housing. The system minimally includes a pump body having a bore therein, a coolant pump impeller, a pump shaft passing through the bore and having the impeller mounted on one end thereof, and a bearingless seal shaft assembly disposed in the bore which prevents coolant from leaking out of the body around the rotating pump shaft. The outer end of the pump shaft and the drive shaft of the electric motor preferably include a quick-disconnect coupler which allows the two shafts to be repeatedly coupled and uncoupled without damage and without tools. This coupling mechanism may take the form of a socket with bayonet slot on one shaft and mating pin on the other shaft that fits in the slot. A face-mounted electric motor is rigidly but removably bolted to the pump housing, and its drive shaft provides complete support for the pump shaft which rotates therewith.

  • Patent number: 5205789
Abstract: A modified jaw type shaft coupling has two opposed members arranged to allow limited flexure about a point that is the geometric center of mating spherical surfaces, a concave surface on one member and a mating convex surface on the other member. One member is attached to each shaft to be rotationally and axially coupled. The jaws on one coupling member have lugs that extend radially inward to axially entrap a larger flange attached to the other coupling member. The flange has notches to allow the flange to axially traverse the lugs. The flange is then rotated relative to the lugs to allow the flange to oppose the lugs. The flange is secured to the other coupling member after the coupling members are axially moved together to allow the jaws to interdigitate to provide rotational coupling. The convex and concave surfaces cooperate to accept axial compressive loads and the flange and lugs prevent axial separation.

  • Patent number: 5186573
Abstract: A first shaft which is, for example, the output shaft of a clutch, is coupled to a second shaft which, for example, is the input shaft of a transmission, by a splined coupling. The splined coupling includes a first sleeve having internal splines for splining with the first shaft and external splines for splining with the internal splines of a second sleeve which internal splines also spline with the external splines of the second shaft. A first spring extending between the first sleeve and first shaft biases the first sleeve toward the second shaft, while a second spring extending between the first sleeve and second sleeve biases the second sleeve toward the second shaft. In order to decouple the first shaft from the second shaft so that, for example, a clutch may be removed from a drive train without removing a transmission, the first and second sleeves are pushed to a retracted position, collapsing the first and second springs.

  • Patent number: 4501572
Abstract: A protective cover assembly is disclosed for a grease fitting formed on the universal joint of a Cardan shaft. The assembly includes a cover plate, a support member and a slideable sleeve. The cover plate projects outward from a gear case and encircles a portion of the Cardan shaft which is connected between the gear case and a transmission. The support member straddles the cover plate and is attached to the gear case such that it encircles a portion of the Cardan shaft and is aligned adjacent to the universal joint. The support member has a stepped outer surface with a radially aligned attachment mechanism formed on the smaller diameter surface. The slideable sleeve protrudes onto the smaller diameter surface and the attachment mechanism cooperates with a mating surface on the sleeve to form a quick attachable and releaseable fit between the two parts.

  • Patent number: 4496334
Abstract: A guard for a combination rotary drive shaft and universal joint includes a tubular member surrounding the shaft and a funnel-shaped member laterally enclosing the joint. An intermediate member interconnects the tubular member and the funnel shaped member. A bearing ring is engageable within one of the drive shaft and the universal joint and mounts the guard on the shaft and joint. To assemble the guard on the shaft and joint it is axially movable along the shaft with passageways formed by the intermediate member and the funnel-shaped member arranged to align with and move over outwardly extending locking tongues on the bearing ring. When a stop surface of the intermediate member contacts the locking tongues on the bearing ring further axial movement is blocked and the guard can be secured in position by rotating the funnel-shaped member so that the locking tongues are spaced angularly from the passageways in the funnel-shaped member.

  • Patent number: 4435166
Abstract: A guard for telescopic cardan shafts, especially for agricultural machinery, comprises an open ring nut supported by an annular throat of a collar near a universal joint of the cardan shaft. Each annular sheath of a telescopic part of the guard engages into a seat formed by projections of the nut. Some of the projections have click detents which go into slots of the sheath releasing it. On the ring nut an inner funnel is mounted, inside the plane seats of which, resilient tongues of the ring nut release themselves performing a clamping function for the ring nut. An additional band springs into engagement on an annular zone of the inner funnel thus extending the latter. The additional band can move at an angle to the inner funnel from a position where holes of the band are lined up with holes of the funnel for access, to another position where the holes are offset to prevent access.

  • Patent number: 4392836
Abstract: A device for connecting a speedometer to a flexible shaft has an annular groove provided round the outer circumference of the stem of the meter, the stem being pierced by a rotating shaft which is connected to the inner shaft of the flexible shaft and is arranged to be rotated by the rotation of the inner shaft; a connecting tube consisting of a front tube part which is arranged to be fitted onto the stem and is provided with a pair of piercing holes confronting each other and a rear tube part which is coupled with the front tube part and is secured to the end of the flexible shaft; and a U-shaped embracing or arm member which is made of an elastic material and is provided with a pair of confronting claws at both ends thereof. The arm member is arranged to be fitted onto the outer circumference of the front tube part in such a way as to embrace it with the claws engaging the piercing holes. The claws are arranged to enter and engage the annular groove when the front tube part is fitted onto the stem.

  • Patent number: 4333319
Abstract: A universal joint assembly which includes a first and a second yoke operatively interconnected by a trunnion cross arranged therebetween is formed with a generally centrally located bore extending through the trunnion cross between the first and the second yoke with a bolt extending within the bore interconnecting the first and second yoke through the trunnion cross. One end of the bolt is attached to a radially movable member in the first yoke and lock means are provided for locking the radially movable element in any selected position in order to fix the position of a connecting member joined to the second yoke so that interconnection of torque transmitting elements may be facilitated.
