Patent number: 5776023Abstract: A heavy-duty power transmission V-belt is so designed that respective upward projections each having an arcuate cross section of respective blocks are fixedly engaged with respective bottom-surface grooves each having an arcuate cross section of a tension member. The radius of curvature R2 of each bottom-surface groove is set larger than the radius of curvature R1 of the upward projection of the block (R2>R1) in the state that the tension member is put strait. The friction plates are arranged adjacent one another and connected by connecting link elements received in recesses formed in both lateral sides of the friction plates between upper and lower beam members of said friction plates. The connecting link elements are laterally grooved to bear longitudinally against the friction plates. The outer surfaces of the lower beam members of the plates define friction drive surfaces for contact with driving and/or driven pulleys. The friction plates are heat treated to increase strength, for example by quenching and annealing. The friction drive surfaces are formed with hardened layers by surface hardening treatment such as by electron beam or laser.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 1989Date of Patent: April 17, 1990Assignee: Tsubakimoto Chain Co.Inventors: Yoshiaki Sugimoto, Toshihiro Hosokawa, Yutaka Uchiumi, Shuji Sasamoto, Nobuyuki Fujimoto

Patent number: 4430067Abstract: V-belts and conical sheaves have long been used in variable ratio friction drive systems. In higher power applications the belts are replaced by metal chains carrying pins which lock to the sheaves. The latter systems are generally 90% efficient. The main loss is associated with the engagement and disengagement of the pins with the sheaves. Each pin slides radially along the sheave as it wedges into place. The loss is considerable because contact is along a line from which lubricant is extruded rather than over an area on which lubricant is present. To avoid this loss the present invention provides a shoe appended to the end of each pin. Coupling between shoe and pin is such that the shoe is permitted to slide relative to the pin in a direction radial to the sheave. It is prevented from sliding relative to the pin in a direction circumferential to the sheave.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 1981Date of Patent: February 7, 1984Inventor: Ranald O. Whitaker
