    Abstract: A poke hole closure assembly for a gas producer which minimizes the escape of noxious or volatile gas from the producer during a poking operation. The closure includes a block having an aperture therethrough which communicates with a poke hole in a gas producer. A closure plate is hinged to the block to block the aperture and pole hole during normal operating conditions, but is openable to enable a poker to be inserted therethrough to check the fire bed. An inert gas is delivered to a conical nozzle in the aparture to direct the gas into the poke hole, to thereby block the outward passage of noxious or volatile gas from the poke hole when the closure plate is opened. The flow of the inert gas is controlled by a valve which is opened to allow flow upon opening of the closure and is closed to block flow when the closure is sealed.

Heat expansive members are provided in the form of bellow type expansion members between the waste heat boiler and the quench section as well as between the quench section and the gasification chamber to absorb or compensate for relative thermal expansion differences due to the temperature ranges involved in gasification.

    Abstract: A centrifugal pump for feeding pulverized coal into a reactor of a high pressure coal gasification system is disclosed. The coal is pulverized and fed by conventional means into a hopper wherein that coal is mechanically pumped, by a modified screw which compacts the coal and releases entrained air and gases from that coal, to an impeller which serves to centrifugally sling the coal at high velocity into the reactor. Gases of the required type, pressure and quantity are combined with the coal at the point at which the coal is slung from the impeller in such a manner that the coal sufficiently dispersed and mixed with those gases and in proper form for gasification.

    Abstract: A coal slagging gasifier and method of operating such gasifier are improved by providing an improved slag removal orifice. The orifice is located centrally within the hearth of a gasifier of the type in which hot burner gases are directed up through the orifice to retain the slag in molten condition on the hearth and in which the slag is periodically discharged through the slag removal orifice. The slag removal orifice is formed as a substantially vertical passageway through the removable slag tap member which comprises a solid cast mass of high thermal conductivity metal having an integrally formed metal tube for circulating liquid coolant through the cast mass. The upper tundish surface of the slag tap member slopes downwardly and inwardly and merges with the slag removal orifice.

    Abstract: A process and apparatus, wherein as hot gas from a coal gasifier discharges through a tubular outlet having therein a wall which is permeable throughout its length for the flow of hot gas centrally therethrough, a gas shield is formed along the inner surface of the tubular outlet by passing a coolant through the wall, which gas shield cools the wall and prevents sticky ash particles in the hot gas from hitting the wall. The gas shield also cools the hot gas so that the sticky ash particles lose their stickiness.

    Abstract: An improvement in a known process and apparatus for gasifying coal with water vapor and oxygen under pressure and at elevated temperature wherein coal is dropped onto a grate within a reactor supplied with gasifying agent from below, product gas being withdrawn above. In accordance with the invention an annular wall depends from the reactor top to form an annular gas space through which product gas is withdrawn. The annular space surrounds the top of the coal bed so the coal is preheated thereby. The wall is provided with apertures so that at least 20% of the product gas enters the annular space by traversing that part of the coal bed surrounded by the wall. This results in reduced product gas velocity and entrainment of coal dust.

    Abstract: A system for detecting faults in the wall of a high-temperature pressure vessel, such as a fuel gasifier. The wall comprises an outer metallic shell having an inner refractory lining, together with cooling tubes extending along the refractory lining. In order to detect a fault, such as a rupture in a cooling tube and resultant melting of the refractory in the vicinity of the fault, one or more electrical conductors are embedded in the refractory and connected at their opposite ends to an external energizing circuit such that when the refractory melts, so also will the conductor, thereby breaking the circuit to indicate the existence of the fault.

    Abstract: An improved grate construction for a fixed bed coal gasifier comprises an interrupted generally cylindrical platform including a plurality of sector-like portions and rotatable means, e.g. a stirrer, mounted for rotation adjacent the upper surface of each platform portion. The upper surface of each portion is inclined upwardly in a circumferential direction to an upper leading edge thereof from which an upright wall depends. The stirrer is rotated in the opposite circumferential direction for cooperating with the depending walls to reduce the size of clinkers and for promoting movement of solids from the shaft over the platform.

    Abstract: An automated poking system includes a plurality of pokerod assemblies positioned around the periphery of a two-stage, fixed-bed coal gasifier at two separate elevations. Each pokerod assembly includes an elongated pokerod selectively actuatable to extend into the coal bed within the gasifier, and appropriate sensors to provide data relating to the temperature of the coal bed, the resistance encountered by the pokerod, and the position of the pokerod. Alternatively, the temperature sensing function is separate from the pokerod activation, and the coal bed temperature is continuously moinitored. The mechanism for controlling activation of the pokerod may be a hydraulic cylinder-piston device or an electric motor driving the pokerod via mechanical means, such as a rack and pinion apparatus. Poking of the lower zone coal bed agitates the bed, detects and breaks up clinkers, and monitors the coal bed temperature.

    Abstract: The specification discloses an automatic sequencing control system for operating a unit consisting of a pair of oil gas-producing generators in staggered sequence, each generator of which comprises a cooperating pair of reactor shells functioning alternately in a forward direction of product gas flow and in a reverse direction of product gas flow. The control system includes a start-up control, a burner control, a burner fuel ignition control, and an electric power failure control for heat and make periods of operation. An individual reverse flow wash box is provided for each generator and also a waste heat boiler common to both generators, valving for which is under control of sequencing control apparatus.The method of operation of a pair of generators disclosed enables operation within a narrow range of temperatures for long periods of time and without necessity for repair or rebuilding of reactor chambers.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for removing oversized, unentrained char particles from a two-stage coal gasification process so as to prevent clogging or plugging of the communicating passage between the two gasification stages. In the first stage of the process, recycled process char passes upwardly while reacting with steam and oxygen to yield a first stage synthesis gas containing hydrogen and oxides of carbon. In the second stage, the synthesis gas passes upwardly with coal and steam which react to yield partially gasified char entrained in a second stage product gas containing methane, hydrogen, and oxides of carbon. Agglomerated char particles, which result from caking coal particles in the second stage and are too heavy to be entrained in the second stage product gas, are removed through an outlet in the bottom of the second stage, the particles being separated from smaller char particles by a counter-current of steam injected into the outlet.
