Patent number: 9709316Abstract: A refrigerator having French-style doors is sealed between the doors by a first sealing pad linearly biased from a base fixed within a recess provided in an inner side portion of one door, and a second sealing pad carried by a mounting arm which is pivotally mounted and angularly biased from an inner side portion of the second door. When either door is closed against the other, the first and second sealing pads deflect and conform to each other to provide an effective seal. In one preferred embodiment of the invention, the first and second sealing pads take complementary concave and convex shapes which provide a larger cross-section for the overall sealing area and establish a high insulation value, while avoiding the need for an internal heater commonly employed in refrigerator doors.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 2013Date of Patent: July 18, 2017Assignee: Whirlpool CorporationInventors: Roger C. Patent number: 9234695Abstract: A refrigerator assembly includes a cabinet having one or more compartments and a door configured to provide access to the one or more compartments. The refrigerator assembly further includes a mullion portion movably attached with respect the door and a hinge assembly attaching the mullion portion to the door such that the mullion portion is rotatably movable with respect to the door about a rotational axis between a first position and a second position. The refrigerator assembly further includes a leaf spring and a cam structure. The cam structure includes a first recess for receiving the leaf spring when the mullion portion is in the first position. The cam structure further includes a second recess for receiving the leaf spring when the mullion portion is in the second position.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 2014Date of Patent: January 12, 2016Assignee: ELECTROLUX HOME PRODUCTS, INC.Inventors: Paul Dubina, Adam Ellis

Patent number: 9157676Abstract: A refrigerator provided with a rotating bar configured to seal a gap between one pair of doors, capable of preventing the door from being incompletely closed due to an erroneous operation of the rotating bar, the rotating bar capable of sealing a gap formed between the rotating bar and a body as well as a gap formed between one pair of doors, the rotating bar being elastically supported by an elastic member so as to move by receiving an external force from a guide part provided on the body, the rotating bar including a sealing member protruding from the rotating bar so as to seal a gap between the rotating bar and the body.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2013Date of Patent: October 13, 2015Assignee: SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD.Inventors: Jee Hoon Lee, Sung Mo Kim, Jong Hoon Oh

Patent number: 7644539Abstract: A door sill and a sealing mechanism engage one another analogously to a rack and pinion in order to automatically create a weather-resistant closure at the gap between an inswinging exterior door bottom and the floor below. The sealing mechanism, which fastens to the door bottom, contains a door-wide rotating shaft with an arm extension tipped with a flexible seal. On the underside of the shaft extension is a short “pinion” component with elongated teeth that engage in corresponding recesses in the sill, raising and lowering the seal in the process. The pinion is positioned on the far lock side of the door, so that the teeth engage and the seal begins to drop only when the door is nearly closed. As the door opens and the seal rises, a magnet further retracts the shaft extension and retains it until the door is again closed.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 2006Date of Patent: January 12, 2010Inventor: Stephen Marshall Baxter

Patent number: 6058654Abstract: A multi-finger door frame seal which results in reduced hinge bind and which creates a predetermined sound upon opening of the door is disclosed. The frame seal is mounted on the stop on the hinge jamb, while on the rabbett on the lock jamb thereby reducing hinge bind during closing of the door. Use of the multi-finger frame seal according to certain embodiments results in a generation of a predetermined sound upon opening of the door. Also disclosed is a security seal system for use adjacent the bottom of the door. The security seal includes a flap which may be either gravity-actuated or spring-actuated. In spring-actuated embodiments, a cam forces the security flap downward into the closed position as the door is closed. While in gravity-actuated embodiments, closing of the door results in gravity causing the security flap to move downward into the closed position where it is maintained while the door is closed.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 1996Date of Patent: May 9, 2000Inventor: Robert Rissone

Patent number: 5425205Abstract: A refrigerator includes a body forming a refrigeration compartment (for cooling or freezing). The compartment has an access opening closed by a pair of side-by-side doors that are hinged adjacent opposite vertical edges of the opening. Each door includes a frame and a slide mounted in a free edge of the slide for horizontal sliding movement. When the doors are being closed, the slides engage displacement surfaces on the body which pull the slides partially out of the frame so that resilient packing members carried by the slides are moved into contact with one another to create an air seal along a vertical interface between the two doors. A magnet on the body attracts metal plates carried by the slides to hold the doors closed. Keeper members can be mounted on the body for yieldably engaging grooves formed in the slides for aiding in holding the doors closed.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 1993Date of Patent: June 20, 1995Assignee: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.Inventor: Jae-Kook Ha

Patent number: 4428153Abstract: A channel is formed between the inner and outer walls in each meeting edge of the doors in a double swinging door installation, and an elongated leaf is pivotably mounted in the channel of each door and extends substantially the full height of its door. Each leaf is pivotable in its channel between a first position adjacent the outer wall of its door where the leaf protrudes out of its channel toward engagement with the leaf of the other door, and a second position away from the outer wall of its door in which the leaf is substantially retracted into its channel. Coil torsion springs urge the leaf of each door toward its retracted position, and a door stop is located in the door frame at the meeting edge portions of the doors for urging the leaves of the doors toward their protruding and engaging positions when the doors are in their closed positions.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1982Date of Patent: January 31, 1984Assignee: Atlanta Richfield CompanyInventors: John C.
