  • Patent number: 5358301
Abstract: According to the invention, a closure panel, such as a tailgate, is removably connected to a vehicle body for pivotal movement about a hinge axis. The panel may be removably lifted from the vehicle body when the panel is pivoted to a panel removal position. A torque rod counterbalance spring is carried by the panel and includes an elongated portion extending between a crank end anchored to the panel for pivotal movement therewith and a stationary end. A support device is anchored to the vehicle body and captures the stationary end of the torque rod to restrain its pivotal movement so that the torque rod is torsionally wound when the panel is pivoted away from the panel removal position to provide a counterbalance force for continuously urging the panel towards the panel removal position. The torque rod is completely unwound when the panel is pivoted to the panel removal position.

Abstract: A hood tilt control mechanism includes a hood support brakcet having one hinge leaf attached to the chassis including a longitudinally extending slot for slidably receiving one end of a telescoping hood tilt assist mechanism and a second hinge leaf attached to the hood and providing a pivotal mount for the other end of the assist mechanism. The assist mechanism telescopes or extends respectively against the bias of opening or closing springs disposed adjacently on the assist mechanism so that when the hood is closed, the closing spring exerts a counterbalancing force on the hood to assist its opening. As the hood opens the closing spring force goes to zero and, as the hood moves to the open position, the opening spring is engaged by the mechanism to dampen the motion of the hood, ultimately stops the hood by interference of the spring coils, and counterbalances the hood weight in the open position to assist closing.

  • Patent number: 4986031
Abstract: A gate assembly for a motor driven vertically pivoting gate includes a support frame and coil springs attached between the gate and the support frame to bias the gate toward a vertical, open position and thereby assist the drive motor. A member secured to the support frame deflects the springs when the gate is in the open position, thereby placing the springs in tension so that the springs also assist the drive motor in starting the gate to move from its open position toward its closed position. The member also engages the gate when it is in its open position and supports the gate in a precisely vertical orientation.

Abstract: An arrangement for suspension of a door, preferably a luggage compartment door, on a vehicle body. Between the vehicle body and the door there are arranged separate first and second spring elements. The attachment points of the second spring element, during the first part of the pivoting movement of the door from a closed to an open position, exerts a torque in a direction counter to the pivoting movement and, during the continued pivoting movement of the door, exerts a torque in the direction of the pivoting movement.

  • Patent number: 4887393
Abstract: A counterbalancing assembly for use with a gate vertically rotatable about an axle carried by a support structure. The counterbalancing assembly utilizes a coil spring having one end attached to the support structure and having its other end attached to one end of a cable. The other end of the cable is attached to the gate at a point spaced apart from the axle. This cable, intermediate its ends, is trained around a pulley. The pulley is positioned so that as the gate is lifted, the spring provides a resilient force assisting in the opening of the gate and, as the center of gravity of the gate crosses over the axle and the gate starts to fall on the other side of the axle, the spring provides a force counteracting this falling movement. With this arrangement, the coil spring also assists in closing the gate from the open position.

  • Patent number: 4873791
Abstract: A torque rod operated counterbalancing hinge comprising first and second hinge members connected together at a hinge point, the second hinge member being curved with a cam surface to the first hinge member, and the other end rotatable relative to a pivot point located at a position displaced from the location of the hinge point. A lever arm has one end rotatably mounted at the pivot point and the other end has a bearing surface for contacting the cam surface. The rotating end of the torque rod is fixed relative to the lever arm whereby rotational hinge motion of the first hinge member relative to the second hinge member causes the cam surface to press upon the bearing surface through a moving contact point which rotates the lever arm to produce a counterbalancing twisting of the torque rod. The invention also includes a door assembly employing the counterbalancing hinges.

  • Patent number: 4864772
Abstract: A self-centering stock-proof gate comprises an elongate tubular member and an extension piece slideable within the tube, the extension piece carrying an embedded wire for communicating electric shock along the tubular member and along the extension piece. The tubular member is pivotally mounted about a vertical access on a hinge structure and is held in a central closed position by a pair of chain couplings which connect to a single spring lying along the tubular member and coupled thereto. Each of the chain couplings has an end link freely slideable along a pin which extends outwardly to a respective side of the tubular member from the hinge structure. Thus when the gate gets beyond a predetermined open angle, the chain slides along the pin towards the hinge structure thus reducing the mechanical advantage of the spring.
