Abstract: A pair of spaced elongate primary security members extend in a first direction, and each has a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings. The ends of a plurality of elongate secondary security members, extending in a second direction which is transverse to the first direction, are located in aligned openings in the primary security members. The ends of the secondary security members are thereby held captive in the primary security members. The secondary security members span a space between the primary security members, and the secondary security members are thus spaced apart from one another. A tertiary security member supports the secondary security members between the primary security members. An electrically operable burglar protection system, having an alarm, is connected to the security members.

Abstract: A portable security grill apparatus which may be installed in window openings of buildings includes two rectangular grill sections longitudinally telescopically fastened to one another. Opposite longitudinal ends of the two grill sections have beams disposed perpendicularly to the axis of longitudinal telescoping movability of the two grill sections, the beams having flat outer surfaces adapted to abut a window edge at one end of the grill apparatus, and a window frame edge, at the other end of the apparatus. At least one toggle clamp Connected between telescopically joined members of the two grill sections is capable of exerting a large outward extension force when in a closed, clamped position, thereby exerting compressive forces on the window and window frame sufficient to prevent the grill apparatus from being removed from the window opening.

Abstract: A gate is provided for use as a closure device within a doorway and includes an L-shaped frame member which may be positioned in stationary relationship to the doorway and a panel member which is pivotally mounted to the frame member. The panel member carries a latching mechanism including a latch for engaging a lower horizontal extension of the frame member to prevent pivotal movement of the panel portion. In addition, a contact member is provided for contacting a surface of the doorway when the latch member is engaged with the frame. A release lever is provided for moving the contact member out of engagement to allow pivotal movement of the panel relative to the frame. A locking member is provided for preventing operation of the lever such that the locking member must be operated simultaneously with the lever in order to release the contact member.

Abstract: An adjustable window well grate is disclosed. The grate includes a plurality of individually adjustable elongate members, each of which has first and second elongated slidable sections, preferably U-shaped stringer sections which are slidable relative to each other to enable one to easily adjust the overall length of the elongate member. By having the ability to adjust the length of each elongate member individually, the grate's overall shape can be adjusted to fit the contour of the window well. In addition to the elongate members, the adjustable grate includes a plurality of cross supports for supporting and connecting a plurality of the elongate members together.

Abstract: A protective railing assembly for an elevator shaft door opening includes a railing which is secured to the floor at the shaft door opening by two hinged parallelogram linkages. The protective railing can be moved between two different horizontally spaced positions and thus be displaced through a predetermined distance without being removed from the shaft door opening. The railing can be mounted while the shaft door opening is still barricaded to permit the barricading to be removed and a shaft door mounted. The railing provides a continuous protection against the falling of persons into the shaft during the shaft door assembly. The protective railing is extensible for adaptation to different opening widths and the parallelogram linkages are maintained at a constant spacing one from the other to permit installation in openings of different widths.

Abstract: Disclosed are a bumper retaining device (20) and a latch holding device (40) which facilitate the safe use of pressure mounted security gates (10) commonly used for children or pets. The bumper retaining device (20) consists of a plate (22) with a hollow (24) on the upper side, configured to receive and retain frictional bumpers (14) of the security gate (10). Two bumper retaining devices (20), one on each side of a passageway, are to be positioned to receive two upper bumpers (14). The bumper retaining device (20) keeps the security gate (10) from being dislodged. A latch holding device (40) keeps the latch (30), which controls width and pressure of the security gate (10), from falling out of adjustment. A kit is assembled of the inventive devices for easy installation by a home owner.

At least one toggle clamp connected between telescopically joined members of the two grill sections is capable of exerting a large outward extension force when in a closed, clamped position, thereby exerting compressive forces on the window and window frame sufficient to prevent the grill apparatus from being removed from the window opening.

Abstract: In a gate or similar closure suitable for temporary and quick installation across a passageway comprised of a vertical barrier, frame, and pivotable gate within the frame, a locking apparatus is provided which allows quick and easy width changes of the closure within various widths of passageways. The locking apparatus does not require disassembly from the closure in order to change the width of the passage. The locking apparatus includes rail engaging hooks which wrap substantially circumferentially around the rails of the vertical barrier. The closure is braced in the passageway and locked into position by conventional clamp screws being tightened against the side walls of the passageway, thus forcing the rails into slots defined by the hooks.

Abstract: An adjustable guard assembly constructed to permit quick removability when positioned in an enclosure, has a first and second section, each section including at least one transverse member, a plurality of longitudinally extending members which are secured at one respective end to an associated one of the transverse member. The two sections are mounted for relative axial movement with respect to each other so as to vary the width of the guard assembly and can be fixed at a given width by a resilient release mechanism which is operatively associated with the first section and the second section. The resilient release mechanism can be adjusted to provide a predetermined force necessary for maintaining the sections in their desired longitudinal position and to permit quick removal of the guard assembly from its assembled position in the enclosure when the predetermined force is overcome by any suitable means exerted against the guard assembly in an emergency situation.

Abstract: A window guard screen and frame assembly installable on the jamb of a building window to prevent unauthorized access thereto. The screen is fabricated of a metal sheet whose margins are folded in to define channel-like end and side branches bordering a planar field perforated to admit light and air. The frame is dimensioned to overlie or nest within the window jamb and is secured thereto. Integral with the inner surface of the frame and bordering the opening therein is a slideway socket for receiving the screen, the socket being defined by end and side legs which complement the branches of the screen.

Abstract: A burglar bar assembly for establishing a security barrier across a door or window opening composed of a plurality of horizontal cross bars held in vertically spaced relation by intervening and transversely related vertical members. Certain of the vertical members are fixed rigidly to certain of the cross bars, but slidably joined to others in a manner to provide for extension and retraction adjustment of the barrier to accomodate variations in door or window dimensions. The bar assembly is hingedly connected at one end to a window or door frame to provide for swinging opening and closing operation of the barrier. A safety latch is mounted adjacent one end of the bar assembly and comprises a spring loaded cam member pivotally moveable against spring bias by a remotely operated cable. The cam member serves to capture and lock the unhinged end of the barrier to a rigid locking channel secured to the window or door frame; such channel having spaced angulated slots receptive of the cross bars.

Abstract: A window guard screen and frame assembly installable on the jamb of a building window to prevent unauthorized access therethrough. The assembly screen is fabricated from a single sheet of metal having folded-in margins to define channel-like upper and lower end branches and right and left side branches bordering a planar field that is perforated in a predetermined pattern to admit light and air. The planar frame is dimensioned to overlie or nest within the window jamb and is secured to the walls or face of the jamb by adjustable brackets. Integral with the inner surface of the frame and surrounding the opening therein is a slideway socket for receiving the screen, the socket being defined by upper and lower end legs and right and left side legs.

Abstract: A closure is provided that is directed, in the preferred embodiment, to an adjustable gate suitable for confining or preventing small children or pets from entering a secure area. The preferred embodiment of the gate is comprised of two connected panels that are relatively slidable to accommodate doorways of varying width. A thumb screw arrangement is used to fix the relative positions of the panels when roughly adjusting the gate to a particular doorway. Once the gate is roughly adjusted to the doorway a foot-pedal mechanism residing in one of the panels is employed to cause a pair of contact pads to engage the door jamb. As the foot pedal is depressed the contact pad blocks associated with one side of the gate and the bumpers associated with the opposite of the gate engage opposite sides of the door jamb. Further, depression of the foot pedal causes an increasing normal force to be applied to the door jamb that frictionally fixes or wedges the gate in the door jamb.

Abstract: A window guard assembly made up of two, slidably coupled, generally U-shaped, members each comprising parallel spaced, elongated, linear legs integrally interjoined at one end to a transverse portion which lies in a plane parallel to the plane of the legs. In assembly the transverse portion of each member extends laterally outwardly and around the legs of the other member. As a consequence, the two members may be assembled slidably with adjacent legs of the two members co-planar and the transverse portions thereof disposed on opposite sides of the assembled members. The outer of free ends of the legs are attachable to window frame members for mounting the guard assembly across a window opening. In a first modified version, each guard member includes three elongated legs attached to a transverse portion and in a second modified version, the transverse portion of each of member is welded to the ends of the legs.

Abstract: An improved lockable window gate including an outer frame element adapted to be secured within a window frame and a swingable gate element pivotally mounted upon the frame element and having a locked coplanar position. An improved locking mechanism provides for multiple locking locations therebetween, thus making the forcing of the gate more difficult. The overall dimensions of the frame element are adjustable to accommodate window openings of variable height and width by means of telescopic elements above and to one side of the gate element.

Abstract: The invention relates to a barrier apparatus for a framed vertically adjustable rectangular window, the apparatus having an adjustable length for insertion into a window casement of the window. It is slideably positionable within the casement. The barrier apparatus includes a first and a second gridwork panel horizontally spaced on co plan juxtaposition; the panels are rigid rectangular frames adapted to border and support the panels, each frame having horizontally disposed upper and lower borders, and inner and outer vertically oriented side borders, the inner side borders facing each other, the facing side borders having vertically spaced guide holes. Also provided are first and second horizontally directed posts affixed between the upper and lower horizontal borders of each panel, such posts affixed to the facing inner side borders and adapted to slideably penetrate the guide holes, the horizontally directed posts having uniformly spaced pairs of notches.

Abstract: A safety gate which is adapted to be mounted on the sidewalls at the top or bottom of a stairway to prevent unwanted access thereto by a toddler or on the sidewalls of a door frame or other structure to prevent unwanted passage therethrough from either direction by a toddler includes a mounting rail which is adapted to be fixedly attached to one of the sidewalls, a locking post which is adapted to be fixedly attached to the other sidewall opposite to the mounting rail and a gate frame assembly which is adapted to be removably and pivotally mounted to one end to the mounting rail and secured at the other end, when desired, to the locking post. When the gate frame assembly is mounted on the mounting rail, the gate frame can be pivoted back and forth like a swinging door when restricted passage is not desired and then locked to the locking post when restricted passage is desired.

Abstract: A barrier apparatus for the safeguard of an open window, exhibiting first and second grid work panels horizontally spaced in slideable juxtaposition, the panels having rigid rectangular frames adapted to border and support the window, each frame comprising horizontally disposed upper and lower rods, an inner and outer vertically oriented border, the inner borders facing each other, such facing (inner borders) having vertically spaced guide holes, the inner and outer vertically oriented borders further having ornamental elements respectively secured at an offset horizontally transverse to the axis of the rods, which offset is approximately equal in extent to an outer transverse edge of a window casement, the plate metal means proportioned to respectively cover each of the first and second grid work panels, in which the sheet metal means will move with its respective panel as one panel is moved relative to the other.

Abstract: A window bar guard system for discouraging breaking and entry through a window is constructed of components which may be readily assembled and installed by the consumer. The grillwork for the window bar guard system includes a set of telescoping tubular steel bars. The telescoping bars permit the consumer to expand or retract the grillwork system to fit a desired window. Upon obtaining the proper size of the grillwork, the steel tubular bars are permanently secured together to provide a solid grillwork custom fitted for the particular window.

Abstract: A security grille for disposition at a window, door or the like has at least a pair of vertically spaced tubular cross bars and a vertically extending tubular side member through which the grille may be fastened to a wall. Horizontal legs of a pair of angle members telescope into the ends of the cross bars while vertical legs of the angle members telescope into opposite ends of the side member. The construction enables horizontal expansion and contraction to accommodate to different installations, enables use of the side member with grilles having different cross bar spacings in the vertical direction and enables variation of the location of the attachment of the grille to the wall without displacement of the remainder of the grille. In the preferred form, the side member is fastened to the wall by latch mechanism having an enclosed cam which normally engages a pin on the side member but which can be actuated to release the pin and open the grille with a single movement of an actuator lever.

Abstract: A reversible, width adjustable gate including a vertically oriented hinge tube supporting a pair of vertically spaced hinges; an end tube, parallel with and laterally spaced from the hinge tube; an upper framing tube horizontally oriented and attached to the uppermost end of the hinge tube and end tube; and a lower framing tube horizontally oriented and attached to the lowermost end of the hinge tube and end tube. Both the upper and lower framing tubes have extension portions protruding beyond the end of the end tube for attachment of a latch. The extension portions may be scored to facilitate breaking or cutting of the tubes for proper width. Reversible hinges permit and up-side-down reversal of the gate and in that both upper and lower framing tubes are provided with removable extension portions, correct width adjustment for attachment of the latch may be made by selective removal of a selected extension portion.

Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed to provide a safety gate comprised of two segments, which on being closed, the segments overlap each other and can be locked in this closed position. Each gate segment is mounted on hinges in turn fastened to doorway frame pillars. The overlapping gate segments allow for convenience of fitting various widths of door frames.

Abstract: This invention is related to a safety barrier positionable in a doorway or passageway to prevent the passage of small children or animals. The barrier comprises a frame assembly having a substantially rectangular structure with upper (4, 5, 16) and lower (1) frame elements, each extending from one side of the passageway to the other. The frame assembly is provided with independently adjustable clamping means (12, 13, 14, 15) at each corner thereof for securing within the passageway. At least a portion of the frame assembly is in the form of a gate which is openable to allow access through the barrier. The gate is provided with further clamping means (22) to lock the openable portion in its closed condition, said further clamping means acting to increase the overall stability of the barrier within the passageway.

Abstract: A barrier apparatus for the safeguarding of open windows. The apparatus exhibits an adjustable horizontal length adaptable for insertion into a window casement below a framed rectangular window, and slideably positionable within said casement. The barrier apparatus includes two mutually telescoping gridwork panels each constituting rigid rectangular frames adapted to define the panels. Additionally provided are vertically oriented seating posts affixed to upper and lower borders of the frames. Horizontally disposed upon each of the gridwork frames are posts having telescoping co-aligning series of holes such that the geometries thereof are suitable for their interlocking through the use of padlock.

Abstract: A mounting device is disclosed for a portable, expansion-type security gate for children or pets. The expansion gate has a variable width with frictional bumpers on each side that frictionally engage a door jamb or other doorway defining member. The mounting device consists of a socket defining mounting member for each frictional bumper that is secured to the door jamb and is configured to receive and retain the frictional bumper. One type of mounting member is configured to mount on flat surfaces such as door jambs and walls. Another mounting member is constructed to mount on a wrought iron railing. Both types rigidly support the security gate and prevent it from being accidentally dislodged.

The door member is coupled to the wall member by several hinges each of which is secured to the door member as well as to a discrete horizontal bar which can serve as a towel bar, which is adjacent to the outer side of the wall member and which is slidable relative to and is releasably connected with several bearings mounted on the wall member by distancing elements. One of the bearings can be anchored in or separably affixed to a further wall of the shower stall.

Left and right sections have their lower portions connected by an intermediate section which forms an opening for a door therebetween. Preferably, the gate comprises a lower horizontal member and an upper member having left and right horizontal portions and a center U-shaped portion in which the door is supported. Panels are located between the upper and lower portions. In use, the gate prevents passage between the door jambs but allows an adult to use the door to pass through the gate.

Adjustment means is provided to permit a given sized gate to be installed within a range of rectangular window sizes without loss of tamper-proof ability. In a vertical direction, steel bars are provided with telescopic elements supported between a pair of adjacent parallel frame members. In a horizontal direction, an adjustable plate-like member of generally L-shaped cross section is provided with elongated slots for bolting to the frame element, the plate being cut to required length, if necessary, at the time of installation.

Abstract: A burglar bar apparatus and method of assembly, for safety and security, suitable for installation in apertures of buildings is disclosed. The burglar bar apparatus comprises a totally unwelded structure with primary components being a gate member having cross rods and lateral rods, mounts for attaching the gate member to the aperture, and a locking mechanism to secure the gate in the aperture. The method for assembling the burglar bar device consists of cutting appropriate lengths of rods into a grid gate that restricts the movement of the individual rods, mounting the grid gate in the aperture, and locking the grid gate for preventing unauthorized ingression or egression.

Abstract: A removable window security guard which is mountable within the window frame of a double sash window. The guard is engaged and secured within existing channels of the window frame to prevent entry from outside a window. The guard does not require the use of locks or other such devices which would inhibit easy removal of the guard in the event of an emergency. Removal of the guard is accomplished by raising the lower window sash to its maximum height and pulling the guard inwardly and downwardly.

The system involves a barrier apparatus comprised of two framed gridwork panels in horizontally spaced coplanar juxtaposition. The spacing between the frames is adjusted by a coupling pin which insertively engages matching apertures in an extension arm and a horizontal border of a frame. A locking device is provided to prevent vertical movement of the window away from engagement with the barrier device.

Abstract: A safeguard system is provided to prevent unauthorized entry through an open window of a casement in which said window is vertically positionable. The system involves a barrier apparatus of adjustable horizontal size provided with posts that insert into channels in the window and the casement when the window is brought down against the barrier apparatus. A locking device is provided to prevent vertical movement of the window away from engagement with the barrier device.

Abstract: A door frame and door assembly for installation in a man-door opening in a mine stopping in which the door is hinged for swinging movement on an axis extending transversely across the frame adjacent one face of the frame and adjacent the top of the frame. The hinge also mounts the door for up and down movement of the door relative to the frame. The door is of such height as to occupy a closed position in the frame inclined down from the hinge toward the other face of the frame with its lower edge bearing on the bottom of the frame and with the door at its top being engageable with and extending up past the top of the frame at the one face of the frame. The door is adapted to swing up from its closed position for opening it, and to move relative to the frame at the hinge to avoid jamming and buckling of the door while maintaining closure of the door upon distortion of the frame such as may result from pressure on the frame in a mine stopping.

Abstract: A modular protective grill is disclosed for removably overfitting a building opening, such as a window. The grill includes a decorative central body which terminates vertically in an upper tubular frame member and a lower tubular frame member. Tubular side attachment bars are affixed to the window jambs and upwardly and downwardly carry telescoping vertical frame extensions. Horizontal frame extensions telescope within the lateral ends of the upper and lower tubular frame members and respectively carry vertical pivot pins. The pivot pins insert into the free ends of the vertical frame extensions to allow the central body to pivot about either side attachment bar by disconnecting the opposite side. The protective grill includes tamper-proof break-away construction members to permit emergency egress upon opening a side of the grill construction.

Abstract: An improved portable expandable barrier is provided which comprises a pair of fences slideably interconnected and releasably held in a desired orientation by locking means such as lock set cylinders. Preferably, one or both fences include telescoping sections releasably locked together to facilitate expansion of the barrier. In one embodiment the fences include elongated bars over which cylinders are slideably secured.Pins or screws pass through the body of the bars of each fence and into engagement with the cylinder to prevent separation of the fences. The barrier can also include one or more collapsible posts fitted with expandable internal bladders and disposed adjacent pairs of the fences. The fence perimeters are provided with means for releasably locking the fences to the posts or other structures. Such means may be adjustable suction caps, preferably protected by overlaying adjustable bell covers locked in place.

Abstract: A security device for preventing entry through a window includes a plurality of elongated arms pivotally connected to each other at substantially their center points so that the arms may be rotated about the pivot point and be positioned at various angles relative to each other. Each of the elongated arms is provided with a hole at each of its ends so that the arms may be mounted on the frame of a window. The elongated arms are releasably connected at their pivot point so that the number of arms may be varied as needed.

Abstract: A security grill which may be placed within a window frame to prevent break ins. In one arrangement, the grill comprises a first channel member adapted to be affixed to the window sill and a second channel member adapted to be secured to the upper window frame. Fixedly attached to the second channel member at predetermined spaced apart locations therealong are tubular stubs of a predetermined length. The bottom channel member has a pattern of apertures extending through the top wall thereof with a spacing between apertures corresponding to the longitudinal spacing between the stubs on the upper channel member. Fitted into the apertures in the second channel member are a plurality of bars which extend outwardly therefrom so as to be insertable within the stubs on the first or upper channel member.

Abstract: An escapable guard system includes means for securance of a grill having at each side thereof to be attached to a window frame or the like a channel with legs outturned; for co-acting with channels of this type a self-protective fastening system is provided which on unlocking provides instant full access to the window opening; the fastening system includes for one side of such a grill an angled guard latch which fits within a channel where it is secured by carriage bolts passing through respective square holes in the channel and into square holes in base members of this invention which the square under-portion of each rounded head of the carriage bolt type machine screw fits, leaving exposed only the featureless semi-spherical portion of the bolt head; this guard latch co-acts with a frame latch which covers the nuts on the carriage bolts when attached to a window frame and which can be locked to the guard latch by a padlock; for the other side of such a grill similarly secured hinge hooks are provided which

Abstract: A support for holding a guard in overlying relationship to a window which includes a pair of spaced bracket members carrying an elongated bar having guard engaging pins, window engaging locking arms adjoining said brackets and supported for movement along an axis parallel to the elongated bar, each locking arm having window frame engaging pins which when engaging the window frame will hold the support in position. At least two supports are used on each window and may be vertically or horizontally disposed to hold the guard.
