Patent number: 6099450Abstract: The disclosed squaring device utilizes an upper squaring carriage with compression belts and pneumatically actuated squaring fingers. In one embodiment, the upper squaring carriage includes at least three compression belts. At least one of the compression belts, central to the other belts, is positioned to apply direct pressure to the glued seam after the upper panels and lower panels are aligned. As a folded box reaches the end of the folding section and enters the squaring section, the moveable belt is raised so as not to apply pressure directly to the glued seam. The drive belts on either side of the seam maintain the box in compression. As the box approaches the squaring fingers, it passes a sensor that sends a signal to a programmable logic controller. At a selected time, depending on the conveyor belt speed, the controller actuates a pneumatic piston that drives a rack and pinion mechanism to rotate the squaring fingers into position to intercept the box travel.Type: GrantFiled: July 9, 1999Date of Patent: August 8, 2000Assignee: Bobst Group, Inc.Inventors: Michael A. Patent number: 5236408Abstract: A paper box folding and sealing machine for forming a hemmed edge. A skiving station removes a portion of a carton blank material at the area to be hemmed. A hemming station folds the skived portion onto the blank, irons it and then opens the hem to lie in a predetermined plane that intersects the plane of the blank. Superheated air directed in a laminar-like air flow, activates a thermoplastic coating adjacent the skived portion of the area to be hemmed. Folding fingers, tack rollers and presser rollers then fold the skived portion onto the activated thermoplastic coating to form a hem that is sealed against the adjacent portion of the blank.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 1992Date of Patent: August 17, 1993Assignee: International Paper Box Machine Company, Inc.Inventors: Hugh A. Patent number: 5071401Abstract: A modified glue flap of a folding carton blank for preventing glue from being squeezed out during the step of adhering the glue flap to the opposite end panel. The face of the glue flap engaged by the glue back-up wheel includes a protrusion near the trailing edge of the flap. Engagement of the protrusion by the back-up wheel causes the glue wheel to skip the trailing area of the flap. The absence of glue in this area prevents glue from being squeezed out when sealing pressure is subsequently applied to the glue flap and the opposite end panel. The protrusion may take the form of an embossed ridge, forming a channel on the opposite side of the protrusion for receiving any excess glue which would have been squeezed out.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 1990Date of Patent: December 10, 1991Assignee: Riverwood International CorporationInventor: Raymond O. Patent number: 4979932Abstract: A method and apparatus for the manufacture of folded paper boxes with a hemmed seal. One of two edges to be overlapped is skived and folded into a hem. After the edges are locally heated, blanks move individually and successfully along a conveyor for folding and sealing. Just before sealing, the hemmed edge passes between a hem holder and the conveyor to maintain the hemmed edge. The hem holder is heated to prevent the edges from cooling. In one embodiment hot air directed onto the hem from the hem holder forms an air cushion between the hem and the hem holder thereby to minimize any contact between the hem holder and the blank.Type: GrantFiled: March 2, 1989Date of Patent: December 25, 1990Assignee: International Paper Box Machine Co., Inc.Inventor: Paul Burnside

Patent number: 4708708Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for skiving and hemming one or more edges of a paperboard web or blank to improve the sealing qualities of a container made from the paperboard. The paperboard is skived twice generally parallel to its edge, once to define an oblique surface and once to make a flat skived surface. The latter is folded over the former and heat-sealed to a heat sealable material adjacent the skived region, defining a wedge-shaped edge portion. The folded over part is preferably ironed to produce a substantially flat sheet, and the wedge-shaped edge is preferably reshaped at some point in the process to make the entire folded over surface substantially flush with the unskived surface to which it is sealed. The flat skived surface is preferably made by a milling procedure in which the milling teeth strike the material while moving in a direction opposite to that of the motion of the material.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1986Date of Patent: November 24, 1987Assignee: International Paper CompanyInventor: Carl J. Patent number: 4696392Abstract: An anti-toggling, constant-contact cage roll assembly is provided for movement of corrugated box blanks along a belt. In one embodiment, the cage roll assembly includes a series of four rollers that are mounted to a bar spring-biased away from a frame, in which the bar is pivotally mounted at each end to an associated lever arm, each of which is in turn pivotally mounted to the frame to form a modified four-bar linkage, with a compliant mount for one lever arm, the mount for the other lever arm being fixed to the frame to permit limited canting of the roller-carrying bar to accommodate multiple folded layers of corrugated material. The subject cage roll assembly prevents the prior art type of toggling of pairs of rollers into an almost vertical position as the box blank moves between the rollers and the belt and thus prevents jamming. In one embodiment, each of the lever arms carries an adjustable stop at the free end for positioning the bar above the belt which carries the box blank.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 1986Date of Patent: September 29, 1987Assignee: Specialty Equipment CorporationInventor: Donald P. Patent number: 4578054Abstract: Apparatus for opening flattened cartons having a pair of minor flaps and a pair of major flaps. A constant speed conveyor carries a horizontally disposed flattened carton across an actuator having a cam surface. The cam surface moves upward to fold one pair of major and minor flaps upward and then downward to fold the other pair of major and minor flaps downward. A clamp grasps the upward folded major flap and draws it upward as the conveyor moves the carton forward causing the carton to open. The clamp releases the major flap and the carton moves past a glue gun which applies glue to the minor flaps. A pair of curl bars folds the major flaps against the glue coated minor flaps. An extending platen presses the flaps against a roller bank permitting the glue to set. The platen retracts and the opened and bottom-sealed carton is completed.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1983Date of Patent: March 25, 1986Inventor: Robert M. Herrin

Patent number: 4514181Abstract: Apparatus for forming a flip top carton wherein the top of the carton has a front flap and side flaps, each having a lower section folded upon the body of the carton and a middle section folded on the lower section. The apparatus has a former associated with a conventional cartoning machine which projects into an erected tubular carton spreading the front and side flaps while inwardly pressing the top portion of the carton to fold the lower section on the top portion of the carton and the middle section on the lower section to form a collar. The apparatus further includes a glue station for applying glue to the internal surfaces of the overlying middle and lower sections. The apparatus further includes compression sections for pressing the lower and middle sections to which glue has been applied together to complete the formation of the collar.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1983Date of Patent: April 30, 1985Assignee: R.
