Abstract: An apparatus for pressforming a paperboard sheet into an articulable pressformed container. The apparatus includes a pair of male and female, matingly engagable dies, which have interfacing forming surfaces in the shape of a container for engaging a paperboard sheet. A first one of the dies has a plurality of ridges extending from the forming surface and a second one of the dies has a plurality of grooves within the forming surface. The grooves register with the ridges when the dies matingly engage for creating creases in the paperboard sheet. The invention also includes a method for simultaneously shaping the container and forming fold creases on the container thereby making the container articulable.

Abstract: Methods of making one-piece lidded containers are described along with containers made by such methods. In one embodiment, the method entails providing a first length of thermoplastic material and a second length of thermoplastic material where a portion of the two lengths of thermoplastic material are brought into an overlapping or abutting orientation to provide a juncture of thermoplastic material. The juncture of thermoplastic material is subsequently secured. The one-piece lidded container is completed by forming a first container and a corresponding lid on the first and second lengths of thermoplastic material. Other embodiments are also described.

Abstract: A packaging machine for the working and processing of at least one length of foil has a chamber consisting essentially of an upper part (1) and a lower part (2). The chamber parts (1,2) are moveable relative to one another on guides (6) on both sides of the foil (24) by means of at least one cylinder-piston arrangement (3) which drives a toggle lever arrangement (4,5). The cylinder-piston arrangement (3) is arranged in the median plane (7) between the guides (6) and drives the toggle lever arrangement (4,5) in the same way under the ends (8) of the guides (6), the toggle lever arrangement (4,5) driving the lower part (2). Abstract: A method for forming a corrugated paperboard container and a container made therefrom having a first layer of flat paperboard to which is attached a second layer of contoured paperboard, said contoured layer having a plurality of flutes, each said flute including a first flute tip and a second flute tip, the flute rise being substantially vertical at the midpoint between said flute tips, said forming method comprising, placing the corrugated paperboard into a stamping die, the stamping die having a male die and a female cavity shaped in the shape in which the paperboard is to be formed; pressing the paperboard between the die and the cavity to apply a pressure to the paperboard; applying heat to the paperboard simultaneously with said application of pressure; and removing said die from the cavity.
Abstract: An improved method for forming tray, boat, tray, boat, and/or clamshell type, paperboard, cartons that have horizontal main wall panels and side wall panels, with corner flaps, joined to the main wall panels and extending therefrom and adhesively secured to each other. Abstract: In apparatus for the formation of a planar blank into a flanged dual-compartment container, an inclined feeder with a generally vertical discharge end at which the blanks are sequentially presented for transfer. Vertically reciprocating glue applicators are mounted forward of the discharge end for depositing glue on the leading blank prior to transfer. A transfer unit is positioned forward of the discharge end for transfering the blank to a posiition overlying a forming chamber and introducing a central fold therein. Opposed upwardly projecting retention bars are mounted over the forming chamber for engaging and retaining the fold. Dual forming heads vertically reciprocate over the forming chamber to engage the blank into the forming chamber and define dual compartments. The dual forming heads are of different heights and mount a flange setter assembly for vertical reciprocation therewith and relative thereto.

Abstract: An apparatus and method is provided for progressively converting each blank of sheet material in a stream of moving blanks into a clamshell assembly having interconnected lid and bottom portions. The apparatus includes a female die assembly having first and second mold cavities, an upstream control system for aligning one portion of each blank at a lid-pressing station defined by the first mold cavity, and a downstream control system for aligning a remaining portion of each blank at a bottom-pressing station defined by the second mold cavity. A male die assembly is provided for simultaneously forming a lid portion in one blank of sheet material and a bottom portion in an adjacent blank of sheet material. In particular, during each pressing cycle, the male die assembly simultaneously presses an initial blank at the bottom-pressing station and a succeeding blank at the lid-pressing station to produce the equivalent of a whole clamshell assembly on a single stroke of the male die assembly.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for forming a hinged or clamshell type carton from a paperboard blank includes a feed conveyor for transferring the blank to a forming die. A hinge erecting conveyor is provided in the feed conveyor guide path to erect the hinge. A pair of pusher fingers form a shuttle conveyor in the guide path cooperating to transfer the partially erected blank to the die. Side channel guides arranged along the conveyor guide path maintain the partially erected paperboard blank in alignment with the erecting conveyor. Side channel guide extensions converge to maintain contacting engagement with the blank as selected carton panels converge during hinge formation and to support the blank in contacting registration on the face of the die and in the forming head path. A hinge gathering guide with hold down rails positioned above the erecting conveyor accurately locates and positions the carton blank and hinge.

Abstract: A flip-top box is folded from a one-piece skillet by bringing a contents retainer panel (R) into overlapping relationship with a front panel (C.sub.1); thereafter pressing the skillet into a rectangular opening of a die (70), to cause certain panels of the skillet to stand perpendicular to rear panels of the container and lid, folding portions of the skillet projecting from the die into a plane parallel spaced from the rear panel and causing other portions to enter the die; and pressing the partially folded skillet into a rectangular opening of a second die opposite the first die to fold down the outside panels of the box to complete the box formation.
Abstract: A cartoning machine which folds a carton blank into a carton having a box body and a box lid which are connected together during a single rotation of an intermittently rotating rotary body. The rotary body is provided with a plurality of pairs of positive dies, each pair of positive dies having dies respectively corresponding to the box body portion and the box lid portion. Disposed at certain angular intervals around the rotary body are a magazine for supplying carton blanks, a box body folding device having a box body negative die, a box lid folding device having a box lid negative die, and an ejecting section for discharging completed cartons. Cartons are continuously formed by the intermittent rotation of the rotary body and the relative movement between the above two box folding devices and the pairs of positive dies, the dies in each pair being movable back and forth separately.
Abstract: Apparatus for adhesively bonding a clam-shell type carton formed from a paperboard blank includes a carton forming die for receiving the paperboard blank, a movable frame for transferring the carton blank from a stack into registration over the die and a reciprocating plunger mounted above the die for forcing the carton blank into the die to fold and erect the carton. The movable frame includes a number of vacuum assisted suction cups for lifting the carton blank from the stack and a plurality of spring-loaded adhesive applicators, connected to a pressurized source of adhesive, for applying a spot of adhesive to selected portions of the carton blank when the blank, carried by the movable frame, is pressed into registration over the forming die.
