Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for providing a product viewing window in a container. The container has at least a body ply and a liner ply, wherein the body ply has at least one aperture therethrough. The liner ply is adhered across the aperture, forming a window into the container. A window-finishing machine that comprises at least two platens and, optionally, a machine pocket positioned between them, a heating element extending through at least one of the platens, and a pressurized air device engages a container. The heating element heats the window of the container to the desired temperature, pressurized air is injected into the container such that the window is forced at least partially through the aperture of the container (and optionally into contact with the machine pocket wall), and the container window is then cooled to the desired temperature.

  • Patent number: 4564309
Abstract: A self-raising post of a plastic material, such as PVC, for use as a roadside marking post, a traffic sign post, a lamp post, or for other comparable uses in road traffic environments, has a channel-shaped bending zone with substantially arcuate cross-section and with the convex side facing the on-coming traffic. The cross-sectional area of the bending zone increases progressively towards the lower end, whereby the flaring-out zone formed upon bending of the post will be larger below than above the line of bending. The greater inherent resiliency of the material below than above the line of bending will cause the post to bend back into an upright position after having been hit by a vehicle. Certain embodiments of the posts are manufactured by diagonally splitting lengths of extrusion-molded plastic tubing, forming two identically shaped posts from each tube length.

  • Patent number: 4521264
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for formation of tubular segments from a generally continuous tube of material by internally cutting the tube of material. The apparatus of the present invention includes a forming mandrel upon which the tube of material to be cut is carried, and upon which the tube is preferably spirally wound. The apparatus further includes a rotary cutter assembly mounted within the forming mandrel. The cutter assembly includes a cutter arbor and a blade actuating rod, with one or more cutting blades of the cutter assembly operatively associated with the actuating rod and the arbor such that relative axial movement of the actuating rod and the cutter arbor moves the cutting blades inwardly and outwardly of the forming mandrel of the apparatus. A cam mechanism is provided for effecting this desired relative axial movement.

  • Patent number: 4349344
Abstract: This relates to a mandrel assembly for forming a continuous web into individual pouches. The web is drawn onto a reciprocating mandrel through a suitable guide so as to have adjacent free edge portions. The free edge portions are sequentially heat sealed by a side sealer and the so formed continuous tube is sequentially pushed onto the mandrels carried by a turret, followed by the heat sealing closed of the forward most portion of the tube and then the cutting thereof from the tube. A drive is provided for reciprocating each mandrel and the drive constructed wherein the advance of each mandrel may be selectively varied. The web is preferably provided with suitable indicia printed thereon and in order that the indicia may be properly oriented with respect to each bag or pouch, there is an indicia or printing detector which functions to vary the advance of the mandrel upon each stroke thereof so as to maintain registration of the printing.

  • Patent number: 4297929
Abstract: Apparatus for receiving a strip of flexible bags with capped spouts at longitudinally spaced intervals which are to be separated at transverse joints and then fed individually to a point of use. It includes draw rolls for drawing the strip horizontally into cooperation with a separator, means for vertically reciprocating the separator to pass through the strip and separate the leading bag therefrom, a guide channel for receiving the spout of each separated bag, and a feeding element for engaging the spout on each successive bag and arranging the spouts in predetermined spaced relationship relative to previously inserted spouts and with the leading bag in a selected position for its spout to be engaged by bag-withdrawing means.

  • Patent number: 4260446
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for producing a packaging sleeve of polygonal cross-section, particularly adapted to be foldably collapsed, wherein circular or tubular sleeve stock is formed on a stationary spindle or mandrel from a plurality of glued, thin layers of paper, fabric, plastic material or the like, wound or wrapped one over the other. The sleeve is thereafter shaped into a polygonal cross-section. During the shaping of the tubular packaging sleeve while it is in the glue-wetted state, at least one continuous folding edge impressed into the sleeve wall and extending in the longitudinal direction of said sleeve is press-formed at the desired longitudinally extending edge corners of the polygonal cross-section.
