    Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for making display boxes having windows made of substantially rigid plastic material. The boxes comprise substantially rigid opaque material, such as paperboard, in combination with substantially rigid plastic material. The substantially rigid plastic material includes at least one fold line or groove which cooperates with a fold line in the opaque material when the box is set up. The present invention provides a method and apparatus for making such boxes from a supply of sheets of the opaque material and a supply of sheets of the plastic material. The method comprises the steps of supplying a sheet of opaque material with an opening, positioning a supplied sheet of plastic material into juxtaposition with the sheet of opaque material to cover the opening, adhering the plastic material to the opaque material, and forming groove lines in the plastic and opaque sheets to permit folding of the sheets along aligned groove lines.

    Abstract: An apparatus for automatically applying a pressure-sensitive tab to the edge of a mailer which includes a feed spool of pressure-sensitive tape. The pressure-sensitive tape is fed through a tape slot of a tape guide block from where it is wound upon a driven windup spool. A pneumatically driven (or, if desired, solenoid driven) punch and die arrangement is positioned so that upon actuation, the die cuts a circular segment of the tape and wiper arms apply the circular cut tape segment to the edges of a mailer. This can be done while the edges of the mailer are stationary or moving parallel to the direction of the tape.

    Abstract: Apparatus for cutting a continuous web into precise length sheets and precisely stacking the sheets, relative to each other, includes first and second moving endless belt tables for advancing the web, a sheet orientation table and a stacking table. A vacuum holds the web firmly, without tension, against the respective belts. A shearing device is disposed between the first and second endless belts. Web, detectors positioned along the line of travel of the web, detect printed or colored lines on the web to obtain accurately cut sheets. Individually driven and positioned sheet grippers grasp the cut sheet positioning each sheet under dual hole punching devices which punch precisely positioned holes in each sheet. A pair of aligning pins on a sheet stacking bed are used as guides for orienting the sheets in interleave configuration. Each sheet is secured to its adjacent sheet to maintain sheet orientation.

A continuous web is preferably longitudinally slit into at least three continuous ribbons which are then manipulated and associated with one another to create an endless series of interconnected pop-up assemblies atop a ribbon consisting of two side-by-side basepieces. In an alternative method, only two ribbons are employed, and pieces having a false backbone are created.

The rings are heated by an induction coil and a downstacker deposits heated rings on a moving conveyor belt which conveys them under the transfer roller where they are urged into firm engagement with a membrane by a resilient applicator pad on the transfer roller and an underlying support roller.

    Abstract: A cardboard pack for eggs, or the like, is made of two slitted blanks, the longer one of which is bent into flat-topped and flat-bottomed waves. After the wave bottoms are bonded by adhesive to the flat blank, the wave tops are tucked in and the waves flattened mechanically. After the adhesive bonding, the solid cross-strips at the ends of the flat blanks become unnecessary and are cut off. Precautions are taken to avoid undesired adhesion of strips previously separated by slitting. With the waves flattened, the blanks can be easily stored or transported. The blanks are set up at the place of filling by mechanically raising the waves, bending up the sides of the back to form pockets, inserting the goods, bending over the top strips, and securing them together on their line of abutment. The shorter set of blanks is preprinted.

    Abstract: Panels of plastic film are delivered to a perforated vacuum drum which has a knife edged die mounted on its surface. Each panel is laid over the die and rotates with the drum into rolling contact with an anvil roll which firmly presses the film panel against the knife edge to cut the panel. After cutting, the film panel continues to rotate with the drum to a position wherein it registers with a blank having a cut-out opening therein which is covered by the film panel. The areas of the blank surrounding the cut-out opening are covered with an adhesive material which causes the film panel to remain adhered to the blank. The vacuum drum continues to rotate and, after bonding of the panel to the blank, the drum releases the vacuum draw on the panel. The cuts formed in the plastic film panels can be straight lines, lines of perforations, or cut-outs bounding areas which are removed from the panel.

    Abstract: A method and a machine for producing a latticework structure composed of cells of essentially parallelepipedon shape from e.g. paper coated on one side with synthetic resin. The web is formed over a mandrel into a sleeve of square cross-sectional shape while being successively advanced, and the sleeve is cut into bits which are flattened and by a step-by-step feeding mechanism positioned adjacent one another with one bit overlapping the following one over halfway in the transverse direction. The bits are bonded together while so positioned whereby flat elements are formed. These flat elements are stacked on top of one another by a mechanism ensuring that the elements are displaced by one cell width in their longitudinal direction and the stack of elements is then cut into pieces having the desired height of the cells. When extended, these pieces form the desired cellular latticework structure.
