  • Patent number: 8029429
Abstract: In a mechanism and method for bonding two paper sheets on an interfolding machine, pre-compressing mechanisms are provided on each of two folding rollers to produce compress-to-bond areas on overlapped portions of two thick or air-impermeable paper sheets transferred to the two folding rollers, so that all plies of the two paper sheets at the compress-to-bond areas are compressed to bond together. Thereby, when the interfolding machine operates at a high speed, a plurality of the locally compressed and bonded paper sheets may still be smoothly folded to form a stack of interfolded paper sheets, such as a tissue paper stack or a paper towel stack.

  • Patent number: 7985170
Abstract: A label product in web form has alternating, oppositely indented creases in the liner of the product to produce a fan-folded stack having alternating, reversely folded plies. Each crease is substantially, if not entirely, perforation-free to maximize the strength of the liner at the fold lines. The product is preferably produced on a narrow web press in a creasing station that includes a stack of rolls wherein a first die roll is on the bottom of the stack, a second die roll is on the top of the stack, and a pair of base rolls are located in the middle of the stack between the die rolls. A blade on each die roll cooperates with a cushion on the corresponding base roll to produce a crease during every other rotation of the die roll, each of the base rolls having a smaller circumference than its corresponding die roll.

  • Patent number: 7918775
Abstract: In a method for producing a hinge-like bend line (3a,b, 4a,b or 5a,b) in a sheet (1) of paper, paperboard, cardboard or foil, particularly a brochure cover, by rotatively driven tools (7.1, 7.2), the bending line (3a,b, 4a,b or 5a,b) is produced by roll bending without scoring the material in the form of a scoring bead. The roll bending is preferably realized by the cooperation of a tool edge (12a) of a first rotary tool member (8.1) with a conical outside surface (11a) of a second rotary tool member (9.1). The roll bending process lowers the bending resistance of the sheet (1) in the region of the bending point (3a,b, 4a,b or 5a,b), wherein the sheet (1) is simultaneously pre-bent in a certain direction along the bending point (3a,b, 4a,b), e.g., in order to take into account the position of the brochure cover on the book block at the spine edges (the sheet is pre-bent inward in a U-shaped fashion).

  • Patent number: 5158523
Abstract: An apparatus for emboss bonding two or more lightweight cellulosic webs to form a multi-ply article, the apparatus including a first cylindrical roll having a metal surface and being disposed for rotation about a cross machine rotation axis, an etched area of the surface of the first roll defining a pattern having pedetermined dimensions for forming proximate the perimeter of the article an emboss bond, the etched area comprising a plurality of truncated right rectangular pyramidal cavities in the roll surface disposed in adjacent relationship in the machine direction and the cross machine direction, and a second cylindrical roll disposed to cooperatively rotate with the first roll and to define therewith a nip for engaging the webs, the second roll having an impressionable surface capable of conforming under pressure to the etched area or having an etched area defining a complementary pattern for meshing engagement with the etched area on the first roll.

  • Patent number: 5057068
Abstract: The invention is directed to a device for sidewise shifting and positioning of a tool in a slotting station situated within a machine used for processing sheet-like workpieces. The station includes a creasing tool, a counter tool, which are mounted on a first pair of vertical, arranged horizontally extending shafts, a slotting tool and counterpart, both fitted on a second pair of shafts arranged downstream of the first pair, a master plate being held in the transfer direction of the workpiece by two crosswise shafts, one of which is for guiding and the other is for shifting the master plate on the guiding shift, the plate having an arrangement for gripping each of the upper tools of the pairs of tools, which arrangement includes an arrangement for laterally shifting the arrangement for one of the two tools relative to the master plate while holding the tool simultaneously fully parallel to the master plate.

  • Patent number: 5045045
Abstract: A web scoring and/or perforating apparatus for signature folding machines or the like including first and second rollers. Each roller has a scoring or perforating blade portion and a resilient roller portion. The rollers are mounted, preferably, on existing, rotatably driven nip roller shafts, upstream of web folding stages in web handling systems. The blade portion of one roller is arranged to interact with the resilient portion of the other roller. Arc lengths of the scoring or perforating roller blade portions and the resilient roller portions are substantially equal to each other and to the fold line of a signature. The rollers, between which the web is advanced, are positioned and oriented to score or perforate portions of the web in alternating directions which correspond to the direction of folding of each layer of the web.

  • Patent number: 4422630
Abstract: A crimp blade holder for attachment to a rotatable shaft for removably mounting a plurality of crimp blades includes a body in which first and second cylinder portions are joined together at an end face of each, such that the portions are disposed along a common axis. A hole extends axially through the body, the shaft being insertable through the hole. A plurality of slots are arranged about the periphery of the first portion in a spaced relationship for removably inserting one of the crimp blades into each of the slots. Additional slots are arranged about the periphery of the second portion, in a second, distinct spaced relationship, also for the removable insertion of one of the crimp blades into each of the slots. The crimp blades are secured within either of the groups of slots, and the body is secured to the shaft at a selected one of a plurality of positions along the shaft. A method of using the described blade holder is also disclosed.
