Patent number: 6733431Abstract: Multi-section print material, such as a newspaper, is folded so as to enable inserts to placed at any location or at multiple locations within the half fold. Several sections are stacked onto one another with one of the signatures offset in the transport direction by a given amount. When the stack is subsequently half-folded, the protruding signature forms a lap which enables an insertion device to automatically insert at the lap position. The system may be operated in straight operation or collect operation. In one embodiment, the sections are transported in two web paths where they are cut into signatures. One of the web paths is delayed so that its signature arrives at the half fold gripper or pin cylinder slightly later than the signature from the other web path. The subsequently formed half fold has the trailing edge of the later-arriving signature protruding by a given lap amount that enables the downline inserter to insert at that position.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 2001Date of Patent: May 11, 2004Assignee: Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AGInventor: Charles Henry Dufour

Patent number: 6730011Abstract: A printed paper web or any required number of such web in superposition are cut into sections at the folding station of a rotary printing press. Each web section has its midpart subsequently pushed into one of the jaw cavities in a jaw cylinder, therein to be engaged and folded by a fixed and a movable jaw. Both jaws are mounted to separate, independently movable parts of the jaw cylinder, to which is coupled a jaw spacing adjustment mechanism for moving the jaws toward and away from each other in order to vary the spacing therebetween in any operating phase of the movable jaw relative to the fixed jaw. In order to adjust the jaw spacing to the running speed of the press, as well as to the number of webs being processed jointly, a jaw spacing adjustment circuit is provided which puts out a signal indicative of a desired jaw spacing suiting both the press speed and the web thickness, for delivery to a stepper motor driving the jaw spacing adjustment mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: March 4, 2003Date of Patent: May 4, 2004Assignee: Kabushiki Kaisha Tokyo Kikai SeisakushoInventors: Shizurou Tokiwa, Takanobu Sakakura, Mutsuhito Yoneta

Publication number: 20030232710Abstract: A printed paper web or any required number of such web in superposition are cut into sections at the folding station of a rotary printing press. In order to adjust the jaw spacing to the running speed of the press, as well as to the number of webs being processed jointly, a jaw spacing adjustment circuit is provided which puts out a signal indicative of a desired jaw spacing suiting both the press speed and the web thickness, for delivery to a stepper motor driving the jaw spacing adjustment mechanism.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 4, 2003Publication date: December 18, 2003Inventors: Shizurou Tokiwa, Takanobu Sakakura, Mutsuhito Yoneta

Publication number: 20030211926Abstract: The folding station of a rotary printing press has a folding cylinder on which the printed paper web is cut into sections. Mounted opposite the folding cylinder, a jaw cylinder has cut in its surface several jaw cavities each extending parallel to the jaw cylinder axis for receiving the midpart of the web section as the same is inserted therein by a folding blade on the folding cylinder. Each jaw cavity has mounted therein a series of fixed jaw parts and a series of movable jaw parts, the latter being jointly movable toward and away from the former for engaging and folding the midpart of the web section. The two outmost ones of the movable jaw parts are positioned closer to the fixed jaw parts than are the other, medial movable jaw parts, in order to more firmly engage the margins of the web section without causing ink offset between the contacting surfaces of the image areas of the web section.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 10, 2003Publication date: November 13, 2003Inventors: Mitsuo Kitai, Takashi Iljima, Toshio Hasegawa

Publication number: 20030004048Abstract: A sheet folding up and rolling machine comprises a frame member, which has an input tunnel at a side thereof and an output tunnel at the other side thereof. A feeding cylinder assembly has at a feeding cylinder and two pressing wheels pivoted in the frame member behind the input tunnel for drawing a sheet into the frame member. Five folding cylinders are pivoted in the frame member behind the feeding cylinder assembly for turning the path of the sheet. Two guiding plates are secured in the frame member corresponding to the feeding cylinder assembly and the folding cylinders respectively for guiding the sheet. Two limiting members are secured in the frame member, each of which has an opening facing to the folding cylinders respectively for the sheet can run into the limiting members to be folded up. A pair of rolling cylinders are pivoted in the frame behind the folding cylinders for rolling the folded sheet.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 27, 2002Publication date: January 2, 2003Applicant: Paraton International Co., LTD.Inventor: Chwan-Jon Wang
