Patent number: 8951177Abstract: A carton conveyer for a packaging machine has upper and lower flights to which sets of flight lugs are attached. Each set of flight lugs comprises leading flight lugs and trailing flight lugs and the leading flight lugs have recesses that face and oppose recesses on the trailing flight lugs. The recesses are formed to confine an open carton therebetween. Notches are formed in the flight lugs in such a way that movement of the leading and trailing flight lugs toward one another causes an un-erected carton between the lugs to be captured and erected.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 2011Date of Patent: February 10, 2015Assignee: Graphic Packaging International, Inc.Inventor: Colin P. Patent number: 8182406Abstract: A machine for intended use in feeding and completing a partially formed carton is disclosed. In one embodiment, the machine includes an overhead conveyor with selectively actuated, depending lugs that engage and convey the carton in a first direction while a first flap on a lid is folded and sealed. A takeaway conveyor includes selectively actuated, upstanding lugs that convey the carton in a second direction generally perpendicular to the first direction while second and third flaps are folded and sealed. The lugs on each conveyor may be closely spaced or overlapping to allow for selective actuation at a desired instant without the need for timing the corresponding chain or the carton feed to the machine. A diverter located at a transition between the forward and return runs of the overhead and takeaway conveyors actuates the lugs in a controlled fashion. Related methods of feeding and forming cartons are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 2003Date of Patent: May 22, 2012Assignee: Kliklok CorporationInventors: Urs Reuteler, Charles Ray Landrum

Patent number: 6112505Abstract: Rigid packets of the type with a hinged lid are fashioned from diecut blanks presenting a central longitudinal portion flanked by two lateral portions, each consisting in a series of longitudinally disposed flaps. The method of manufacture involves directing the blanks singly and in succession between a pair of contrarotating rollers with dies shaped and positioned to engage each lateral portion; the dies are designed to modify a pair of adjoining flaps on each side, which ultimately will be bent through a right angle to form an internal layer of the relative flank face of the packet, by producing at least one bend in one flap at an end adjacent to the other flap, and forming a projection on the longer flap which in the finished packet will be breasted permanently in contact with an inner reinforcing frame.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 1998Date of Patent: September 5, 2000Assignee: G D S.p.A.Inventors: Alessandro Minarelli, Maurizio Righi

Patent number: 5827162Abstract: A device for folding paperboard blanks, the device including folding rails for supporting the blanks traveling through the device which define a path of travel for the blanks and a conveyor for conveying the blanks through the device. The device further includes a first operator side elongated helix folding assembly rotatably supported at each end, a second operator side elongated helix folding assembly rotatably supported at each end and aligned with the first operator side helix folding assembly, a first drive side elongated helix folding assembly rotatably supported at each end, and a second drive side elongated helix folding assembly rotatably supported at each end and aligned with the first drive side helix folding assembly. Actuators are connected to the ends of each second helix folding assembly for translating the ends either toward and away or above and below the blank path. A servo motor having a resolver may be connected to each helix folding assembly for rotating it to fold the blanks.Type: GrantFiled: January 2, 1997Date of Patent: October 27, 1998Assignee: The Langston CorporationInventors: Ephraim Rubin, Raymond P. Patent number: 5752909Abstract: A skiving method comprises forming by milling, along an edge zone of a packaging blank comprised of a liquid-absorbent layer and at least two liquid-barrier layers thereon, a tongue, a recess inwardly of the tongue, a land inwardly of the recess, and a groove inwardly of the land, folding over the edge zone to insert the tongue into the groove, and sealing the edge zone to the remainder of the sheet material, preferably by mechanical pressure alone.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 1997Date of Patent: May 19, 1998Assignee: Elopak Systems AGInventors: Ragnar Harald Sagvik, Lars Lyngaas

Patent number: 5236408Abstract: A paper box folding and sealing machine for forming a hemmed edge. A skiving station removes a portion of a carton blank material at the area to be hemmed. A hemming station folds the skived portion onto the blank, irons it and then opens the hem to lie in a predetermined plane that intersects the plane of the blank. Superheated air directed in a laminar-like air flow, activates a thermoplastic coating adjacent the skived portion of the area to be hemmed. Folding fingers, tack rollers and presser rollers then fold the skived portion onto the activated thermoplastic coating to form a hem that is sealed against the adjacent portion of the blank.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 1992Date of Patent: August 17, 1993Assignee: International Paper Box Machine Company, Inc.Inventors: Hugh A. McAdam, III, M. Paul Burnside, Jeffrey Lindberg

Patent number: 4979932Abstract: A method and apparatus for the manufacture of folded paper boxes with a hemmed seal. One of two edges to be overlapped is skived and folded into a hem. After the edges are locally heated, blanks move individually and successfully along a conveyor for folding and sealing. Just before sealing, the hemmed edge passes between a hem holder and the conveyor to maintain the hemmed edge. The hem holder is heated to prevent the edges from cooling. In one embodiment hot air directed onto the hem from the hem holder forms an air cushion between the hem and the hem holder thereby to minimize any contact between the hem holder and the blank.Type: GrantFiled: March 2, 1989Date of Patent: December 25, 1990Assignee: International Paper Box Machine Co., Inc.Inventor: Paul Burnside

Patent number: 4650450Abstract: The invention relates to apparatus for supplying wrapping elements (2, 57) comprising elongate portions of card (2) having a series of zones (6, 7, 8, 9), separated by transverse creases (a, b), and flaps (10) defined by creases (c) disposed longitudinally to the card (2). The apparatus comprises a first mechanism (14) and a second mechanism (50) for continuously transfering the pieces of card (2) which are orientated transversely to the path of the first mechanism and longitudinally with respect to the path of the second mechanism. The apparatus also comprises folding elements (42, 43, 46, 47, 55, 56) located along the paths of the two transfer mechanisms (14, 50) arranged to fold the zones (6, 7, 8, 9) and flaps (10) about the creases defining them out of a planar condition and subsequently to fold them back to cause them to return to the original coplanar condition. The pre-creased blanks so formed can be readily wrapped by conventional wrapping machines round soft articles (68) e.g.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 1986Date of Patent: March 17, 1987Assignee: Azionaria Costruzioni Macchine Automatiche, A.C.M.A., S.p.A.Inventors: Franco Aiuola, Luciano Nannini

Patent number: 4548593Abstract: The invention provides a process for making a dry powder box with greater geometrical stability and free of pin holes, gaps and the like through which powder may sift. The process uses a carton blank having a bottom closure wherein a pair of relatively large, opposing dust flaps are first folded into the carton tube, in order to define, maintain and stabilize the cross section of the carton. Then, a pair of relatively smaller, opposing major flaps are folded and glued over the open sides of the large dust flaps. This combination of flaps keeps the large flaps from working out of alignment and helps maintain the cross sectional stability of the box. The top of the carton may be a gable having panels at the ends of the gables which are slightly larger than the cross section, of the gable roof sides. When the gable is formed, the larger ends are pushed down to create a leverage which closes the top opening more securely. The cut lines which form and define the flaps extend across approximately 80.degree.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 1984Date of Patent: October 22, 1985Assignee: Tisma Machine CorporationInventor: Steven Tisma
