  • Patent number: 5800332
Abstract: A method and apparatus for separating solids from a liquid in a slurry using a centrifuge employing two simultaneous rates of rotation is disclosed. In the preferred form, the device includes an external bowl having at one end a hub with a central trough therein, plural passages from said trough through said hub extending radially outwardly to contact newly delivered slurry against the wall of the bowl, the wall comprising an elongate right cylinder construction terminating at a flange. A second portion of the bowl is tapered on the exterior and defines a rising beach portion on the interior. Inside, an elongate screw conveyor is deployed and is driven by the input velocity of an external motor rotating said bowl and said conveyor. The shaft connects to the conveyor through a differential motor which provides a scrolling speed of up to about 10 rpm. At the remote end, the conveyor tapers to cooperate with the beach portion of the bowl to scroll dry solids onto the beach and through an outlet.

  • Patent number: 5792039
Abstract: A decanter centrifuge for separating a feed suspension of a particular solid material in a liquid into two fractions, i.e. a heavy fraction containing heavy particles and a light fraction containing light particles, or no particles at all, is described. The centrifuge has a rotatably mounted elongated bowl having closed ends with a side wall extending therebetween. A helical scroll is rotatably mounted coaxially within the bowl, and the bowl and the scroll may be rotated at different rotational speeds. A pipe coaxially mounted in a tubular shaft and rotatably supporting the scroll, feeds the suspension into the bowl. Several outlets in the wall of the bowl discharge the heavy fraction from the bowl. The light fraction travels through the length of the bowl by the helical scroll and is discharged from outlets located downstream from those that discharge the heavy fraction. The delivery region is also nearer to the outlets for the heavy fraction than to the outlets for the light fraction.

Abstract: A centrifugal separator for a flowable mixture having a housing rotatable defining a separation chamber. At least one magnet is carried by the housing and is rotatable therewith to create a magnetic field within the housing with the magnetic lines of force carried around the axis of rotation during rotation of the housing. The chamber is divided into sub-chambers by radially extending baffles. The mixture is retained in each sub-chamber during housing rotation so as to stabilize the mixture and rotate it together with the housing. Housing scrapers face the inside surface of the housing to remove from that surface material which is attracted to the magnet. This action tends to draw the molecules of the mixture into alignment with the rotating lines of force thereby polarizing the molecules and decreasing molecular bonding. The centrifugal action causes the polarized molecules with decreased bonding, to move apart with the heavier molecules moving radially outwards further from the lighter molecules.

  • Patent number: 5380266
Abstract: A feed accelerator system for use in a centrifuge, the system comprising a conveyor hub rotatably mounted substantially concentrically within a rotating bowl, and an accelerator including a cone-shaped inside surface disposed between an accelerator base and an accelerator small diameter section. The accelerator is secured proximately to its base within the conveyor hub so that the accelerator rotates with the conveyor hub. A distributor including a distributor surface having no sharp bends or junctions is secured to the small diameter section. A plurality of accelerator vanes are disposed on the cone-shaped inside surface and extend proximately from the small diameter section and terminate at a location on the cone-shaped inside surface proximate to the accelerator base so that an unvaned portion of the cone-shaped inside surface forms a smoothener section.

  • Patent number: 5374234
Abstract: A decanter centrifuge comprises a drum (1) with a conveyor (2) containing an inlet (4). The liquid to be separated flows in a jet centrally into the inlet (4) towards an end wall (11 ), at which the liquid is radially distributed and flows axially onwards towards the second end wall (13) through an area of the inlet (4) free of members imparting an angular velocity to the liquid. The inlet (4) is provided with inlet apertures (6) positioned on a radius larger than the radius to the overflow edge (9) at the liquid discharge. The design of the inlet (4) implies that the free liquid surface in the inlet during operation is drawn far towards the axis of the drum, thereby causing excess energy supplied to the liquid during acceleration to the angular velocity of the conveyor (2) to be dissipated in the comparatively thick liquid layer before the liquid discharges into the separation space (7) through the inlet apertures (6).

  • Patent number: 5354255
Abstract: The conveyor of a decanter centrifuge includes a small outside diameter central hub extending for at least a portion of the longitudinal length. On the hub is attached a series of longitudinally- and radially-extending shaped ribs, which in turn attach to larger ribs that transverse an open feed zone. The longitudinal and transversing ribs support a ribbon conveyor flight. The open feed zone serves to decrease feed solids degradation. The ribs outside the feed zone serve to improve interface stability and minimize washout. The overall structure of the conveyor is mechanically stiffer and less prone to vibration. The conveyor is lighter and less expensive to construct.

  • Patent number: 5342281
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for the wet-mechanical separation of solids within a parting liquid into floats and sinks according to their density which includes a container rotatable about an axis provided with at least one opening for the admission of said solids to be separated and at least one separate opening for the discharge of the sinks, the floats and the parting liquid. A screw conveyor for separating the solids is arranged in the container. The screw conveyor is rotatable about the container axis with one set of helices for engaging the floats and another set of helices for engaging the sinks. A diaphragm plate is arranged axially on the screw conveyor between the admission opening for the solids to be separated and the discharge opening for the sinks such that one part of the screw conveyor conveys the sinks to the sinks discharge opening with its helices and another part of the screw conveyor conveys the floats to the floats discharge opening with its helices.

Abstract: A decanter centrifuge is provided with a dual motor drive for purposes of start-up and efficient operation. The two motors are coupled together during, at least, the start-up of the centrifuge rotation so as to provide the desired power requirements and to reduce the thermal load on the motors. After reaching operational speed, a first motor continues to drive the centrifuge at the desired operational speed and the second motor may be disengaged from operation. The dual motor drive may be varied by use of wye-start and delta-run phase connections for the motors. The operating conditions of the two motors can be varied to provide the necessary power while maximizing efficiency of the operation.

  • Patent number: 5314399
Abstract: A sedimentation centrifuge includes a bowl which is supplied with a feed mixture, i.e., a solid-liquid mixture, from a supply pipe. When the bowl rotates at high speed, heavy solids are displaced radially outwardly toward and sedimented on the inner wall surface of the bowl. The solid particles are then discharged through a discharge hole of the bowl and an outlet passage by a screw conveyor in the bowl. During rotation of the bowl, fins on the screw conveyor assist in separating the liquid into heavy and light liquid phases with increased separation efficiency. The separated heavy and light liquids are separately discharged from the bowl through respective outlet passages.
