  • Patent number: 4381570
Abstract: To increase the comfort of sofa-beds both in bed and seat positions, the intermediate and the deck section coverings (either textile fabric or link fabric) are anchored to fixed, transverse rigid members located at the rear (or head end) of the intermediate section and to the cavity (boxing) section. The intermediate and deck sections are independently supported so as to be stretched tight and firm in bed position and to be loose and flexible in seat position. In the seat position, both the intermediate and the deck sections are spring supported along the rear edge so as to give a soft spring support to a cushion supported from these sections. A textile flap sewn to the textile deck section and passing under a transverse deck reinforcing rod tends, in seat position, to pull the front edge of the deck section downwardly so as to flatten any bulge of the mattress so that the sofa seat cushions rest horizontal and any gaps between such cushions and the top of the front of the sofa frame are eliminated.

  • Patent number: 4301559
Abstract: A sofa bed mechanism consisting of three sections, namely, a rear section, an intermediate section, and a front section, that are foldable between collapsed sofa positions in which the sections are in substantially horizontal vertically stacked positions and bed positions in which the sections extend in substantially horizontal alignment. A frame supports the sections, the frame being of minimum width by which is meant the frame is of a shallow dimension in a direction front to rear of the sofa. The sections are stacked on top of the frame in their sofa positions so that the frame and the sections present a compact substantially rectangular profile when viewed from the end of the frame, thereby allowing substantial flexibility in the design of the sofa in which the mechanism is mounted. The end sections are connected by hinge assemblies located entirely on the sides of the assemblies to avoid the necessity for any cross tubes that might interfere with sleeper comfort in the bed position of the mechanism.

Abstract: This pull out sofa bed is an improvement of the sofa bed disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 3,984,883 dated Oct. 12, 1976 and assigned to the assignee of the present application. In said patent bed there is in effect a lost motion during which no work of compressing the mattress is being performed while slack is being taken up. Consequently the work required to compress the mattress and create the necessary locking of the compressed mattress, is concentrated over a relatively short part of the closing cycle of the folding of the bed. The result of this is that a relatively high "peak" force is required at this portion of the cycle to close the bed and compress the mattress and lock the bed in closed position, thereby requiring exertion of considerable strength by the person closing the bed. The patented bed is satisfactory when the mattresses were made of polyfoam.

The hinge permits the mattress to be folded between a sleeping position in which the two sections extend horizontally and a sitting position in which the foot section is folded on top of the head section. The springs of the head section have less compressibility than the springs of the foot section so that the head section is relatively firm and the foot section is relatively soft. When the foot and head sections are in their sleeping positions, the relatively firm head section supports the torso of a person resting on the mattress and provides firm, comfortable sleeping support. When the foot section is folded to the sitting position, the relatively soft foot section provides good sitting comfort.

  • Patent number: 3984883
Abstract: This pull-out sofa bed comprises a metal bed provided with a head section that can be raised to T.V. position, and releasably locked in such position, or released from such position and lowered to sleeping position, or folded over an adjacent long intermediate section of the bed to underlie the foot section of the bed folded thereover and also over said intermediate section, for compactness when shipping the bed. This bed has rear legs foldable underneath the intermediate section when the bed is fully collapsed, and also has means contacting the underside of the collapsed rear legs, to support the folded bed in a plurality of selected vertical levels of the sofa seat when the pull-out bed is collapsed and used as a sofa. The bed has means for locking the foot section of the bed to the intermediate section, in the folded or collapsed condition of the bed, to compress the mattress, which means is highly simplified and easy to manufacture.

  • Patent number: 3975783
Abstract: A furniture assembly such as a sofa bed which moves between a sitting configuration and a bed configuration including a metal support frame having end units with interconnecting beam members removably connected to the end units by bolts. A metal plate is secured to each end unit and includes a pair of slots inclined or slanted upwardly and forwardly from the rearward ends with U-shaped metal track members having flanges secured to the metal plates for defining laterally extending track surfaces. Inner and outer frames are pivotally connected together by an intermediate frame and are movable between a folded position and an unfolded position to define the bed configuration. The inner frame has bifurcated brackets secured thereto and shafts are connected to the bifurcated brackets and extend through the slots in the adjacent plates to support rollers which roll along the track members. The shafts have threaded nuts thereon and the shafts are the sole means for supporting the bed frames on the support frame.

  • Patent number: 3974529
Abstract: A combination bed and lounge having a mattress assembly supported on wheels and track and guide structures for movement from a horizontal bed position to a seat position. The inner section of the mattress rides on downwardly and inwardly extended rails. The outer section of the mattress is carried by a movable support having a pair of wheels. The movable support cooperates with a locking member to releasably hold the mattress in the seat position. In one bed and lounge unit, a backrest is pivotally mounted to the inner section of the mattress and is movable to a backrest position when the mattress is in the seat position and an open position when the mattress is in the bed position. In another bed and lounge unit, a backrest is pivotally mounted on the cabinet accommodating the mattress assembly.

  • Patent number: 3952344
Abstract: This bed comprises a front forwardly extending foot section having rearwardly extending side arms. Said side arms have similar, symmetrically disposed, horizontal offset portions raised above the horizontal plane of the bed mattress supporting fabric of the bed platform when the bed is in open sleeping position. In the closed position of the bed, the foot section projects rearwardly and said offset portions are then disposed below the horizontal plane of the mattress supporting fabric and hence in a depressed plane. The fabric is connected to each of a pair of zig-zag springs disposed alongside said depressed portions (in the closed position of the bed), at points disposed inwardly of the ends of the zig-zag springs, and also by a pair of helical tension springs to the side arms, at locations beyond the outer ends of said depressed portions.

  • Patent number: 3934281
Abstract: In a convertible sofa-bed in which a mattress is folded over upon itself, a bed-folding linkage is provided which compresses the mattress with great leverage, thus providing means for facilitating the opening and closing of the sofa-bed, even when using relatively thick mattresses. The bed mechanism includes a mattress support having first, second, third and fourth hinged sections whose folding is controlled by the bedfolding linkage. The mattress-compression linkage includes a first link connected to the first or foot section, and a second link connected to the third section of the mattress support structure. An abutment is provided on the third section. The abutment is located so that when the bed is folded up, the second link hits the abutment and this causes the linkage to be pulled tight and locked in place to compress the folded mattress in a compressed condition.

  • Patent number: 3932902
Abstract: A convertible sofa bed particularly adapted for use in recreational vehicles. The bed includes a frame, a seat portion, and a back portion pivotally connected to the seat portion for movement between a horizontal and an upright position. A pair of pivot assemblies at opposite sides of the seat frame each includes front and rear pivot arms, one attached to the seat portion and the other to the back portion. A connecting link attached to the arms constrains them against movement independently of one another. The arms and connecting link are arranged and oriented to pivot one way to project the seat portion forwardly and move the back portion to a horizontal position to form a bed. Pivoting them the opposite way retracts the seat portion and moves the back portion to an upright position, converting the structure from a bed to a sofa.
