  • Patent number: 8468621
Abstract: A furniture product includes a folding mechanism that folds into a seat frame. The folding mechanism includes a rear section, a middle section, and a front section, with the rear and middle sections being received in a cavity in the back of the seat frame when the product is in a stowed, seating position. Upon receiving a user input, a position motor deploys the folding mechanism into a sleeping position. Upon achieving the sleeping position, an inflation switch is engaged. An air pump disposed in or near the furniture product is activated in response to engagement of the inflation switch. To return the product to a stowed, seating position, a user input causes the air pump to deflate the mattress and the position motor to fold the folding mechanism into the seat frame.

  • Patent number: 5249317
Abstract: A convertible sofa-bed that includes a deck comprising three flat panels hinged to one another and foldably mounted on a horizontal support frame that permits their disposition either in a bed or a sofa configuration. As a sofa, the first, front panel constitutes the seat; the second, middle panel constitutes the front portion of the back; and the third, rear panel constitutes the rear portion of the back. As a bed, all three panels lay on the same horizontal plane. Conversion from the bed to the sofa configuration is achieved by folding the panels about their common hinges, which is initiated by an inverted-L mechanism pivotally mounted under the panels so as to cause the initial break of the plane between the middle an rear panels when the front panel is lifted. Once this initial break occurs, the folding of the panels is easily accomplished by pushing the front panel backwards.

  • Patent number: 4651363
Abstract: A mechanism for a convertible seating/sleeping article of furniture has a base which moves on a floor, a seat support member supported on the base by a scissors linkage, and a back support member which is connected to the seat support member by a first pivot. A back-lowering link is pivotally connected at second and third pivots, respectively, to one of the scissors links and to the back support member. When the mechanism is in its seating configuration, the first pivot is near a line which extends between the second and third pivots to prevent inadvertent movement of the members to their seating positions.A support leg is pivoted at the rear of the back support member, and a link swings the support leg outwardly when the back support member moves to its sleeping position. The seat-supporting scissors linkage includes a first link which is in a same vertical plane as the base, and a pair of parallel links which are pivoted to and are on opposite sides of the first link.

  • Patent number: 4190911
Abstract: A convertible couch, particularly for use in vans and other recreational or leisure vehicles, includes a seat and a back hinged relative to one another, and a pair of side supports having multiple supporting surfaces arranged to engage and support the seat and back in plural positions of the seat and back. The arrangement of the supporting surfaces is such that the seat and back are firmly held in position without requiring the use of separate fasteners or linkages and the like and thus, the convertible couch is both economical to make and safe to use in moving vehicles. Additionally, the arrangement of the supporting surfaces and their cooperation with the seat and the back is such that a balance is achieved which renders the convertible couch easy to manipulate in its movements from a couch position to a bed position and vice versa.
