Traversing Over Seat Patents (Class 5/45)
  • Patent number: 7748061
Abstract: A sleep sofa includes a main frame, a seat unit, a back unit and a supporting linkage assembly that can move the back unit along an arc to the front of the seat unit when the sleep sofa is converted to a bed state, the supporting linkage simultaneously lifting the rear side of the seat unit, which is mounted in the main frame to slope downwardly from horizontal at about a 5° angle, up to horizontal. Once positioned in front of the seat unit, the back unit can be pushed downwardly so as to rotate into a locked parallel orientation with the seat unit. The seat cushion of the seat unit and the back cushion of the back unit form the bedding surface. Pushing a back release tube will unlock the back unit to allow it to be returned to a sitting positioning above the seat unit (tilted rearwardly to define an angle of about 115° with the seat unit). During its arc movement over the seat unit, the back unit will rotate around pivots on the side backs thereof.

  • Patent number: 6918143
Abstract: The invention relates to a seat which can be converted into a bed wherein the back of the seat (4) can be pivoted onto the same level as the seating surface (2) by means of arms (3), said arms (3) being connected on one end to the seat frame (1) and on the other end to the back of the seat (4). Said seating surface (2) is covered with a removable upholstery fabric (15) when the furniture item is in a seating position. The upholstery fabric is joined to the front under surface of the seat frame (1) on one side and is joined on the other side to the underside of the back of the seat (4). A double positioning drill (17) is arranged underneath the upholstery fabric (15), extending exclusively along the seating surface which is preferably joined to padding, and is connected thereto on the front end of the seating surface (2). As a result, a simple way of placing the drill is obtained.

  • Patent number: 6622321
Abstract: A convertible article of furniture includes a primary cushion member supported by a support structure, and a backrest assembly which is movable relative to the primary cushion member between an upstanding rearward position and a lowered forward position. The backrest assembly has a sectional articulated construction, including an inner backrest member and an outer backrest member. When the backrest assembly is in the upstanding rearward position, the outer backrest member extends upwardly from the inner backrest member to support the upper back area of a user seated upon the primary cushion member. When the backrest assembly is moved to its lowered forward position, the outer backrest member is moved downwardly and inwardly relatively to the inner backrest member, to an unobtrusive stored position.

  • Publication number: 20020108174
Abstract: A new simple and inexpensive futon frame which can be converted from a bed to a sofa. The frame is fabricated in a three-section, tri-fold configuration with three sections hingedly joined together. When opened, the segments of the frame form a horizontal bed support frame. The hinge points of the frame are offset to allow for folding of the frame into the sofa and/or into a small, compact unit for ease in shipping. Each of the frame sections has support legs, some of which are foldably mounted to the frame. The back legs of the frame (when it is a bed) become a support for the back of the frame (when it is a sofa). The use of a steel mesh as the futon mattress supporting surface adds great benefit to the product in that it allows use of a much thinner (less costly) futon mattress.

  • Patent number: 6347418
Abstract: A convertible daybed including a pivotable swing arm assembly attached between a support for a removable cushion assembly and a backrest assembly. The swing arm assembly includes a pair of brackets attached on either side of the cushion assembly and a pair of swing arms pivotably mounted between brackets at either end of the backrest assembly. The swing arm assembly allows the backrest assembly to be manually moved between a seating configuration, where the backrest assembly is positioned against a rear surface of the cushion assembly, and a sleeping configuration, where the backrest assembly is positioned against the front face of the cushion assembly. The backrest assembly includes a backrest shaped to conform with the front and rear surfaces of the cushion assembly, providing a comfortable seating arrangement in the seating configuration and a substantially flat sleeping surface in the sleeping configuration.

  • Patent number: 5787522
Abstract: A sofa-bed assembly in a recreational vehicle or van has a seat and a back. There is a storage space under the seat. The back can be moved in a simple roll-over action from an upright position at the rear of the seat to a horizontal, bed-forming position at the front edge of the seat. Two mounting brackets are fixed to the vehicle, one at each side of the seat. The back is connected to mounting brackets by two links on each side of the brackets and back to facilitate this action. The mounting brackets also serve to control the seat which is connected to the brackets by a pair of seat-connecting pivot links.

  • Patent number: 4292698
Abstract: A convertible sofa-bed unit for a vehicle in which a back section is mounted on a seat section and is moveable from an upright position near the rear of the seat section to a horizontal position in front of the seat section, and a device is provided for preventing the movement of said back toward the forward edge of the seat in response to a sudden forward lurching of the back section. The strap is preferably connected at one end to the rear of the back section near the upper edge thereof and is wound on a ratchet controlled reel preferably disposed beneath the rear edge of the seat section, and an inertia responsive device prevents unreeling of the strap when the sudden forward lurching of the back section occurs momentarily.

  • Patent number: 4170800
Abstract: A convertible couch or chair has a stationary frame that stands on the floor and which has an upper support surface with a front and a back, and a guide inclined upwardly toward the front. A movable frame has a pair of front legs which rest in the floor at all times, and a back end which can move along the guide between an out position with this back end supported on the front of the stationary frame and an in position with the back end at the back of the stationary frame. A seat cushion is held on the movable frame and a backrest is secured to the stationary frame by a pair of arms that allow pivoting of this backrest on the arms between a seat position erect at the back of the stationary frame and a bed position in front of the front leg of the stationary frame. A back leg on the backrest stands in the floor in this bed position and a loose cushion that normally rests atop the seat cushion is positioned on the frame in the out positions.

  • Patent number: 4110855
Abstract: A convertible sofa-bed unit in which the back is moved from a substantially vertical position along the rear of the seat section to a horizontal position along the forward edge of the seat, and substantially on a plane therewith. The back is held in the two positions by a mechanism at each end, each consisting of two arms connected to the ends of the seat section and the back section which cause the back section to rotate to place the surface facing forward in the sofa position to the upwardly facing arrangement in the bed position. A support member is provided at each end of the seat section near the forward edge thereof for engagement by one arm at each end, capable of fully supporting the back in the bed position so that no legs are required for use of the unit as a double bed.
