  • Patent number: 6712780
Abstract: A knee immobilizer for being custom-formed to the shape of a knee while flexible and upon hardening providing a rigid, knee-supporting custom fit. The knee immobilizer includes an elongate splint with a substrate impregnated or coated with a reactive system. The system hardens upon exposure to moisture to form a rigid, self-supporting structure. A flexible cover overlies the substrate for forming an integrated splint structure for being molded while flexible to an aspect of the knee. A bandage extends around the knee for holding the splint in a supporting position on the knee. A splint support cooperates with the splint and the bandage for maintaining the splint on the bandage in a conforming shape against the knee and substantially immobilizing the knee in a predetermined position.

  • Patent number: 6461290
Abstract: A collapsible, transportable personnel isolation apparatus or device is used to isolate a patient in a controlled environment and to protect the patient against biological or chemical hazards during transport of the patient. The collapsible apparatus has a flexible containment wall which is expandable from a collapsed, stored state to an expanded state to receive the patient. At least a portion of the containment wall is clear to allow observation of the patient within an interior region of the device. An air filtration system is provided for filtering air between the airtight interior region and the ambient atmosphere. Preferably, the apparatus has various ports therein, such as glove ports, pass through ports, access ports for cardiac leads, infusion line ports, and ventilation ports. Preferably, an air filtration device provides a flow rate of 4 to 6 cfm to prevent an undesirable build-up of carbon dioxide and provides a predetermined air pressure within the interior regions.

  • Patent number: 6201481
Abstract: The invention relates to a safety device for furniture with at least one movable element which can be moved by a motor-driven positioning drive controlled by operating controls, particularly the head and/or foot of a base for a bed, or a seat and/or backrest element of an armchair, where the positioning of the element forms a gap in which an object or body part can become trapped as a result of the movement of the element. If a body part becomes trapped, this can lead to serious injury. Objects must also be prevented from becoming trapped, as they can cause damage to the furniture. According to the invention, at least one contact element is positioned in the gap which, when subjected to the pressure applied by an object or body part becoming trapped, closes an electric circuit which bridges a switch associated with one of the operating controls, the closing of which prevents further movement of the positioning drive.

  • Patent number: 5913769
Abstract: A combination desk and fold-out bed comprises a desk top supported on side panels; a pair of movable pedestals that fit in a front area of a desk opening under the desk top and adjacent inner sides of the side panels, the pedestals being removable from the desk opening to serve as night stands; and a fold-up bed mounted in a back area of the desk opening, behind the position of the pedestals when they are positioned in the front area of the desk opening, the bed being movable forwardly through the open front of the desk and unfoldable forwardly to an open position when the pedestals are removed. A pair of movable door panels extend between the pedestals and conceal the folded bed at the rear portion of the desk opening, when the pedestals are in place under the desk top, in the desk opening. The door panels are hinged to the pedestals and pivot forwardly to lay against the sides of the pedestals and provide access to the bed.

  • Patent number: 5423597
Abstract: Assembly components are provided for children to build and rebuild their own assemblies of school furniture. The assembly components include, as general categories, base components and interchangeable auxiliary components. The auxiliary components can be releasably coupled with the base components to build school-related assemblies including chair assemblies with adjustably high seating surfaces; a notice board assembly for supporting notices or a chalk board or the like; a stage assembly for theatrical productions; symbol display assemblies, as for displaying the alphabet in block letters; and desk assemblies with adjustably high desk tops. In some embodiments of the present invention, the furniture base is not just a unitary component but an assembly of modules. Accordingly, there are modules which can be releasably coupled together to build a modular assembly of a furniture base.

  • Patent number: 5400447
Abstract: A folding bed assembly for use within an article of furniture, such as a desk, having a fixed top wall. A series of bed sections, pivoted to one another in succession, are foldable into a generally rectangular collapsed condition in which the longer dimension of the rectangle is oriented vertically when the folded sections are within the article of furniture. The bed sections are mounted on a wheeled carriage, and a vertical panel hides the bed assembly when it is within the article of furniture. A carriage linkage responds to pivoting of the panel from its vertical orientation to a horizontal orientation for moving the carriage and bed sections out of the article of furniture. A swing-out linkage pivotally supports the collapsed bed sections on the carriage, the swing-out linkage constraining the collapsed bed sections to move between a storage position, in which the collapsed bed sections are close to the carriage, and a swing-out position in which the collapsed bed sections are elevated above the carriage.
