Patent number: 5438723Abstract: A hospital bed, particulary suitable for home use comprises a plurality of sections which can be releasably connected together, and can be assembled for delivery and storage with head and foot sections, and head and foot boards stacked on a seat section. When thus assembled the bed can be put into a box and for ease of movement wheels project through the bottom of the box. The various sections and parts are releasably connected by pairs of brackets which clip together, the brackets held together by a clip which prevents disengagement. Power means are provided for raising the head section panel and the foot section panel. The bed has fixed legs which are provided with wheels. Movable legs can also be provided, extendable and retractable. When the movable legs are extended the fixed legs are raised, the wheels clear the floor. Head, foot and seat panels are joined together for articulation by means of a novel hinge.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 1993Date of Patent: August 8, 1995Assignee: Carroll Equipment Sales CorporationInventor: Timothy Carroll

Patent number: 5394580Abstract: A hospital bed has a frame mounted on a base which includes castors. Side guards are mounted on the bed frame. The side guards are inwardly moveable and releasably lockable to narrow the hospital bed. The frame has a cam block with a recess. A latching arm is pivotally connected to linkage connecting the side guard to the frame and has a handle and a cam roller follower. The handle is rotated to move the side guard inwardly; when the roller follower engages the recess the side guard is locked in the inward position. The side guards are moveable and releasably lockable toward the foot end of the bed. A spring biased plunger on the linkage projects through a hole in a plate on the linkage. The side guards are releasably lockable in an intermediate position. The spring biased plunger projects through a hole in the cam block.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 1993Date of Patent: March 7, 1995Assignee: Hill-Rom Company, Inc.Inventors: L. Dale Foster, John W. Ruehl

Patent number: 5377370Abstract: A collapsing wing on a lateral side near the head end of a hospital bed. As the result of a laterally inwardly applied force, the wing collapses thereby allowing easier access to the center or furthermost side of the hospital bed or patient for a nurse or care provider. The wing is attached to the bed frame of the hospital bed by a spring loaded parallelogram linkage which permits the wing to move laterally within a generally horizontal plane as a result of the inward force. Once the inward force is removed, the linkage returns the wing to the full width hospital bed configuration. The wing is a U-shaped channel open toward the bed. The bed has a narrower U-shaped channel open toward the wing channel. The channels are connected by the parallelogram linkage. The wing channel nests over the frame channel when a laterally inward force is applied to the wing channel.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 1993Date of Patent: January 3, 1995Assignee: Hill-Rom Company, Inc.Inventors: L. Dale Foster, Ryan A. Reeder

Patent number: 5319817Abstract: A patient lift apparatus is provided with a U-shaped base that folds to enable convenient reduced width storage of the unit when not in use. Accordingly, the U-shaped base of the unit has a hinge with a vertical axis in each leg of the "U". These hinges are located midway of each of the vertical legs. Typically, these hinges provide for a pivotal movement of the casters at the ends of each leg of the "U" from a caster extended position for patient lifting and transport to a caster folded position parallel to and spaced apart from the base of the "U". A releasable lock mechanism is provided to each leg for locking the hinge in either the caster extended position or the caster folded position. The lock includes an outer moving sleeve with a spring biased inner key connected to the spring biased sleeve. The key moves with the sleeve and fits into and out of paired apertures in the hinge.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1992Date of Patent: June 14, 1994Assignee: Andermac, Inc.Inventors: Mohammed R.
