  • Publication number: 20010027577
Abstract: A stress reducing device is defined by a dual use orthopedic pillow having a low density polyurethane foam outer region, a high density polyurethane foam middle region that are provided in removably attachable layers, so that the size of the device may be adjusted to accommodate different sizes and preferences of individual users. The pillow advantageously includes leg clasps for securely engaging the inner thighs of an individual in a side lying position defined by a stem and a pair of crescent shaped buttresses. The buttresses resist rotation to the prone and supine lying positions. The high density foam within the stem separates the knees to reduce spinal stress. Advantageously, a supine sleeping position is aided by positioning said pillow under the legs to flatten out the spine while supporting the legs at the thigh and calf regions.

  • Patent number: 6298508
Abstract: A kneel-type chair is provided by a pair of interconnected cushions and provides a frameless device that is lightweight, portable and rugged. A bottom solid wedge base composed of a firm foam includes a cut-out leg groove lined with three layers of varying density foam that receives the knees of the occupant. The bottom cushion is angled downward in the front so that the occupant's knees are supported at the lowest point on the cushion. Upwardly extending portions located at the sides of the bottom cushion provide a lateral boundary to the occupant's lower legs. An upper, smaller wedge support cushion is positioned behind the occupant's knee joints extending to and supporting the occupant's buttocks. The upper cushion is releasably attached to the upwardly extending portions of the lower cushion by means of hook-and-loop-type fasteners. The material of both the upper and lower cushions is preferably molded polyethylene foam.

The pair of foot rest mechanisms are each selectively movable from stowed positions beneath the patient supporting surface to deployed positions thereof which straddle a drop leaf foot section forming a part of the patient supporting surface. As the drop-leaf foot section is moved to a vertically upright position, a space between the two foot rest mechanisms is available for physician use. Further, as the drop leaf foot section is moved in the vertically upright position toward the floor, a mechanism is provided for preventing contact of the foot end of the drop leaf foot section with the floor.

  • Patent number: 6230351
Abstract: A seat cushion which increases the surface area contacting the patient's skin, and which conforms evenly to the skin over the skin/surface interface. A seat cushion includes a flat layer of foam that is temperature sensitive and which has rate-dependent deflection which provides maximal hysteric dampening and maximal tissue/surface interface contact. Different stiffnesses of foam are used under key areas to allow support and at the same time to allow the tissue to reach mechanical equilibrium. The maximal surface contact will apply constant low pressure to the tissues, thus reducing the shear force and the risk of tissue injury.

The panels are connected together in a manner which allows the two side panels to collapse inwardly toward the bottom panel. The side panels fold inwardly toward one another and are secured by an attachment means, preferably hook-and-loop strips.

Abstract: A lateral slumber support member includes a longitudinally extending wedge shaped pillow, for supporting a user, such as a pregnant woman, in a lateral slumber support, while lying down on either the left side or the right side, with the longitudinally extending wedge shaped pillow providing compressible, but firm support for the spine and pelvic region of the user. The longitudinally extending wedge shaped pillow has a triangular cross section, and has an interior body made of a firm, compressible elastic material, such as foam, which can provide support, but which easily conforms to the spinal and pelvic regions of the user. The wedge-shaped pillow includes a fabric cover which is permanently sewn to a bed sheet along an imaginary line dividing the sheet in half so it can be used by the user lying on either the left or right side.

Abstract: An orthopedic leg support is disclosed having a planar leg support surface angled at approximately 10 degrees relative to a generally horizontal base, with a calf recess, a heel recess and a channel connecting the calf recess and the heel recess to reduce or eliminate contact and pressure between the device and the calf, lower leg, ankle and heel of a patient. The device further incorporates lateral foot support walls and a sole support wall to prevent inward rotation, outward rotation and plantar flexion of the foot. The device is preferably composed of a semi-rigid foam material having some cushioning and compression characteristics.

  • Patent number: 5765564
Abstract: A limb support assembly for typical use in supporting the legs of a person to keep the heels of a person suffering from a decubitus condition or burned areas on a limb above and out of contact with a bed. The assembly basically includes an inflatable tubular bladder, a soft absorbent sock over the bladder, attachment devices such as cords attached to the bladder ends and attachable to a bed frame, and a pump for varying bladder inflation pressure. The assembly is placed on a bed or other support at a suitable location for elevating a limb. The attachment is then installed by fastening the cords to the bed frame or other fixed part of the support. A board may be secured to the bladder assembly to further restrict movement of the assembly on the bed or other support surface.

  • Patent number: 5745939
Abstract: A leg rest for supporting a patient's legs while the patient is lying on a bed and during turning or otherwise managing the patient. The leg rest includes a pair of trough portions for receiving the patient's legs and a raised central portion and a pair of raised side portions for keeping the legs apart and restraining sideways leg movement. The central and side portions extend beyond the trough portions for restraining sideways movement of the patient's feet as the patient's legs rest on the trough portions with the patient's feet projecting beyond the trough portions for pressure relief of the patient's heels. The leg rest may be inflatable so that it may be inexpensively produced and disposable and so that its pressure may be adjusted for patient comfort. The leg rest may be contained within a case which has a bib for underlying the patient's upper legs to prevent slippage of the leg rest out of position.

Abstract: An orthotic leg elevator for elevating the leg of a subject during a post-operative period or in other situations in which it is necessary to avoid direct contact between the leg and a bed or other surface, or to raise the leg with respect to a surface. The leg elevator includes a rectangular block whose top side has formed therein a concave trough extending the length of the block to cradle the leg of the subject so that his foot is then adjacent the front end of the trough. Nested in the trough at its rear end is a knee-supporting piece which underlies and conforms to the knee joint. Secured to the block are three detachable straps adapted to engage the cradled leg at spaced positions. The first strap engages the leg above the ankle; the second at an intermediate position between the ankle and the knee, and the third just above the knee, thereby immobilizing the leg.
