Abstract: The present invention provides a dosage form for the treatment of bacterial, viral or fungal conditions which comprises, a pharmaceutically acceptable acidifying agent in an amount sufficient to reduce the pH at an environment of use to below pH4, and a pharmaceutically acceptable source of nitrite ions or a nitrate precursor therefor; wherein said acidifying agent and said source of nitrite ions or nitrate precursor are separately disposed in respective pharmaceutically acceptable carriers for admixture at the intended environment of use to release NO or NO2 ions. The invention also provides delivery systems for the topical medicament.

Abstract: A gel formulation is combined with a bactericidal concentrate which is a liquid mixture of about 1000 parts by volume of ultra pure water having an electrical resistance of 16-26 megohms, total dissolved solids of less than 0.04 parts per million and a specific conductance of less than 0.10 mho with about 1.2 to 3 parts by volume of Willard Water as prepared in accordance with U.S. Pat. No. 3,893,943. The bactericidal liquid concentrate in the amount of 3.5 to 12 ml in one liter of gel formulation is applied directly to a skin surface area having a burn or other dermal lesion to protect the area from bacterial contamination.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a plasminogen activator inhibitor, an external preparation for skin comprising the same, a method for improving rough skin and in particular, for improvement of an effective inorganic component. A plasminogen activator inhibitor contains a specific zinc oxide which adsorbs a plasminogen activator and effectively inhibits its activity. When it is used as an external preparation for skin, excellent improvement of rough skin is obtainable. Further, when silica-coated zinc oxide is applied as an external preparation for skin, excellent improvement effect and prevention effect for rough skin are obtainable without an intolerance sensitivity reaction in the case of morbid dermatitis such as atopic dermatitis or pimpled skin.

Abstract: Many human conditions, often skin conditions, are treated topically or orally with a retinoid such as retinoic acid or acetretin, which treatment often has the side effect of dry, irritated, and/or peeling skin. The use of soaps, detergents, chemical irritants, and such can also cause these same side effects. These side effects can be reduced or eliminated by the topical administration of an inhibitor, especially a natural inhibitor, of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), administered concomitantly with the retinoid, separately from the retinoid (such as on an as needed basis), or both. Administration of the two together is facilitated by a composition suitable for topical application and comprising both the retinoid and a natural EGFR inhibitor. Preferred natural inhibitors are genistein and other isoflavones extracted from natural occurring substances, or simple derivatives of such substances.

Abstract: The present invention relates to cartilage extracts and to a method of producing the same. Shark cartilage extracts having anti-angiogenic, anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory and anti-collagenolytic activities have been obtained by an improved process. The process comprises the steps of obtaining a crude cartilage extract in an aqueous solution, this crude extract being fractionated to recover molecules of a molecular weight less than about 500 kDa. Some of the biologically active components of the extract are prepared by further fractionation. The cartilage extract can be used for treating diseases or conditions having etiological components selected from the group consisting of tumor proliferation, angiogenesis, inflammation, metalloprotease activity and collagenolysis. Several cosmetic applications based on the capacity of the liquid extract to improve skin conditions are also disclosed. A simple and efficient process for the preparation of cartilage extracts is also disclosed.

Abstract: Described are compositions and methods for the treatment of acne. The method and compositions comprise an orally ingested composition containing thymic peptides, vitamins, and minerals. Zinc, pantothenic acid, magnesium, pyridoxine, vitamins A and D, riboflavin, and folic acid are found to be essential to the composition. Also described is a topical composition comprising pantothenic acid that, when used in conjunction with the oral composition, resulted in a better response than either the oral or topical composition alone.

Abstract: A method for treating a skin condition by intimately combining a water soluble antibiotic with the keratin layer of the outermost layer of the cleansed epidermis. The antibiotic is dissolved in the alkaline fraction of an electrolyzed water. The solution is characterized by the absence of hydrolysis products, turbidity, and loss of potency of the antibiotic. The aqueous solution is applied to the treatment area where the water is absorbed by the keratin and the antibiotic is carried into intimate contact with the keratin after which the water is evaporated leaving the antibiotic dispersed across the treatment area.

The compositions include one or more pyridine-thiols and tautomers with attached metallic moieties. Administration of the compounds to aging skin and mucous membranes in topical formulations, either as the only active ingredient or in combination with other known active ingredients to treat a follicular dermatosis. Additional compositions for treating follicular dermatosis contain one or more sulfides and oxides of these same metallic ions, either alone or in combination with other molecules. Topical formulations containing both a pyridine-thiol and tautomers with attached metallic moiety and a metallic sulfide and/or metallic oxide effectively treat skin and mucous membranes suffering from a follicular dermatosis.

The present invention relates to a therapeutic agent containing a compound represented by the following formula (I) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or hydrate thereof as an effective ingredient: wherein R is hydrogen or a halogen. The therapeutic agent for dermatitis according to the present invention effectively and in a dose-dependent manner suppresses antigen-induced swelling in a mouse ear, a recognized animal model for atopic dermatitis, and suppresses the antigen-induced flare-up reaction in mice which occurred with the swelling reaction. In addition, no adverse reaction in the skin are observed.

This invention also is directed to a method of making the composition of this invention. Abstract: Novel herbal extracts provide potent efficacy in the treatment of acne and furuncle. The formulated extracts of Momordica charantia L. are from either the whole plant or parts of the plant. The extracts have been formulated into aqueous solution, pads, and/or lotion. These formulations have been provided to treat acne and furuncle 2 to 3 times a day. It has demonstrated the ability to manage various grades of acne, from mild, moderate to severe, which include comedos, papules, pustules and nodules. Significant improvement is visible within five days. There are no observed either long-term or short-term side reactions.
