Abstract: Disclosed are aspects of board finishing systems. For example, in various aspects, disclosed are joint compound compositions, wall assemblies, methods of treating walls, and products related to any of the foregoing, including reinforcement trim, e.g., for protecting corners where boards meet, fasteners, and tape. The joint compound preferably is a drying type composition with reduced shrinkage property, and includes binder and hollow spheres, resulting in an ultra lightweight formulation in some embodiments. The joint compound composition can be applied in a one-coat treatment in preferred embodiments. Other aspects of board finishing system accommodate such a one-coat treatment to thusly allow a user to manipulate the compound closer to the plane of board as compared with conventional formulations. Joint tape and reinforcement trim can include non-swelling synthetic paper facing material in some embodiments.

A rectangular insulating board has a flat, rectangular back surface, and a front surface shaped to form a number of flat-faced, protruding ridges, aligned parallel to an edge of the rectangle. The cross-section, taken orthogonal to the ridges has a saw-tooth shape. When a standard-size, fiber cement plank is placed face-down on a face of a ridge with its edge abutting the short face of an adjacent ridge, and a second board is placed face-down on an adjacent ridge, the second board overlaps first board and lies flat on the first board. Once the shaped insulating board is aligned to a required orientation, and attached on a building surface, it serves as a positioning guide for attaching fiber cement boards. The interior and exterior surfaces each define respective surface planes. One or both of the interior and exterior surfaces have a plurality of upstanding longitudinally oriented ribs extending outwardly from the surface. The ribs extend away from their respective surfaces and define a void space between the surface adjacent to the ribs and an end of the ribs, such that a line extending outwardly from and normal to the surface of the flange adjacent to the ribs traverses through the void space and then subsequently contacts the ribs. The void space serves to provide a joint compound locking feature for the trimming element.

Abstract: The panelized roof sheathing construction system includes a plurality of panels attached to a building frame structure in substantially abutting relationship. Each panel includes a water resistant barrier layer secured atop the outward facing surface of the panel. The water resistant barrier layer includes a skid resistant surface. Joints between panels are sealed by strips of water resistant tape or the like. The panels are made of lignocellulosic material. The water resistant and skid resistant surface may include indicia for aligning strips of tape or for aligning fasteners.

  • Patent number: 7677002
Abstract: The invention comprises a wall sheathing barrier system having moisture permeability and simple improved installation method. The system comprises adjoined structural panels. Each panel has an overlay paper bonded permanently to the structural panel, which provides a moisture permeable barrier and a textured skid-resistant surface. The skid resistant surface may include indicia for aligning strips of tape or for aligning fasteners. Further, the seams of adjoining panels are sealed with a sealing means to complete the moisture barrier.

  • Patent number: 7591113
Abstract: Plasterboard is surfaced with a lining paper which is printed over the whole of one face of the board using an ink containing binder and particulate solid material, applied with a density of print such that under optically examination at least 80% of the surface of the lining paper is covered by the applied print. The particulate material has a d50 denotes a number length mean particle size such that 50% of particles have volume smaller than a sphere of diameter d50. The colour of the printed lining paper can be matched to the colour of a jointing compound used as a filler between the edges of adjacent boards. The material of d50 mean particle size in the range from 1 to 10 micrometers gives the lining paper a surface texture resembling that of jointing compounds and so reduces or removes contrasts, notably in absorbency, reflectance and gloss, between the surface of the boards and the surface of the jointing compound between boards.

Abstract: A drywall trimming element for bridging two sections of drywall is an extruded element having first and second opposing flanges each having an interior surface and an exterior surface. The element is secured to the drywall by joint compound. The interior surfaces are adapted to be positioned on or adjacent to a respective one of the drywall surfaces. The interior and exterior surfaces each define respective surface planes. One or both of the interior and exterior surfaces have a plurality of upstanding longitudinally oriented ribs extending outwardly from the surface. • Patent number: 7568513
Abstract: A container is provided having a periphery and a base, which enclose a cavity. The periphery and the base are connected together, the periphery upwardly extending from the base. The periphery has a first slot and a substantially opposing second slot. Each of the first and second slots is sized to permit a first end of a tape located on a roll to be slid through it. A tape holder may be connected to the container so that the tape holder lies outside of the cavity of the container. The roll of tape can be placed on the tape holder so when the tape is pulled through the “mud box”, the tape is thereby unwound. As the tape is manually pulled through the “mud box”, joint compound is thinly applied to one side of the tape. As this is done, the joint compound begins to “adhere” to the tape, conditioning the tape for excellent wall adhesion.

Abstract: A system and method for forming flush joints and improving the shear strength in wallboard panels are provided. The system includes using a clamping mechanism to apply simultaneous opposing pressure against the butt joint area so as to cause the edges of adjacent wallboard panels to align level with the plane of the drywall panels. In certain implementations, the system utilizes an elongated tie strap to interconnect a back support disposed on the back side of the drywall panels with a tensioning device which is disposed on the front side of the panels. Adhesive prepackaged in packets can be used to attach the back support to the drywall.
