  • Patent number: 10119326
Abstract: A spacer member, for allowing a walkable skylight with an insulating glass unit to be created with a structural glass panel and a thermal glass panel. The spacer member includes a slab part and a tube part having substantially the same thickness. The tube part is hollow, containing desiccant material for absorbing moisture within the insulating glass unit. The spacer members may be joined together to create a spacer frame. The spacer frame defines an inner rectangular region. When the spacer frame is sealed between the structural glass panels and the thermal glass panel, an air gap is created within the inner rectangular region. The desiccant material effectively removes moisture from air within the air gap.

  • Patent number: 9803415
Abstract: A flexible spacer body has two opposing faces adapted to engage the inner surfaces of glazing structures to define an insulating glazing unit. The spacer body may be desiccated polymeric foam such as a silicone foam rubber or EPDM. An adhesive capable of bonding the spacer body to the glazing structure is carried by both of the faces. The adhesive may be from about 0.050 mm to about 1.524 mm thick. The adhesive material also has the properties of low argon gas and low moisture permeability. The adhesive comprises polymers where butyl rubber and/or polyisobutylene polymers together make up the majority of the polymers. The adhesive may also comprise other materials as needed to make it pressure sensitive and to impart a water resistant bond to glass glazing structures. The space assembly may include additional materials to secure the adhesive to the spacer body.

  • Patent number: 8821999
Abstract: Vacuum-insulated glass (VIG) windows (10) that employ glass-bump spacers (50) and two or more glass panes (20) are disclosed. The glass-bump spacers are formed in the surface (24) of one of the glass panes (20) and consist of the glass material from the body portion (23) of the glass pane. Thus, the glass-bump spacers are integrally formed in the glass pane, as opposed to being discrete spacer elements that need to be added and fixed to the glass pane. Methods of forming VIG windows are also disclosed. The methods include forming the glass-bump spacers by irradiating a glass pane with a focused beam (112F) from a laser (110). Heating effects in the glass cause the glass to locally expand, thereby forming a glass-bump spacer. The process is repeated at different locations in the glass pane to form an array of glass-bump spacers. A second glass pane is brought into contact with the glass-bump spacers, and the edges (28F, 28B) sealed.

Abstract: Certain example embodiments relate to a coated article including at least one infrared (IR) reflecting layer of a material such as silver or the like in a low-E coating, and methods of making the same. The provision of a layer including nickel titanium and/or an oxide thereof may permit a layer to be used that has good adhesion to the IR reflecting layer, and reduced absorption of visible light (resulting in a coated article with a higher visible transmission). When a layer including nickel titanium oxide is provided directly over and/or under the IR reflecting layer (e.g., as a barrier layer), this may result in improved chemical and mechanical durability. Thus, visible transmission may be improved if desired, without compromising durability; or, durability may simply be increased.

Abstract: A spacer for an insulating glazing unit, the spacer including a longitudinal body including two longitudinal sides and two membranes or membrane parts, each membrane or membrane part configured to be secured to a glass sheet of the insulating glazing unit, and each membrane or membrane part configured to be articulated to the body about an axis parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body between a position in which the membrane or membrane part lies against a longitudinal side of the body and a position in which the membrane or membrane part is at least partially moved apart from the longitudinal side of the body. The spacer allows the size of the insulating glazing unit not to be restricted while ensuring a bead for example of butyl of the insulating glazing unit can withstand high climatic loads without being damaged.

  • Patent number: 8557356
Abstract: A translucent insulated glass panel includes first and second glass plates separated from one another by a spacer. Together with the spacer, the first and second glass plates form a closed cavity. The closed cavity is filled with a translucent insulating material, preferably an aerogel material. The latter is in a compressed state, so that it will not settle over the course of time to produce an empty space or gap at the top of the panel.

Abstract: Disclosed is a warm window system that utilizes individual buss bars that are placed within the space between an inside window pane and an outside window pane and creates sufficient physical force to create an electrical contact on the tin oxide layer on the inside surface of the inside pane of glass. The buss bars have a modulus of elasticity to ensure sufficient electrical contact with the tin oxide layer to prevent the formation of hot spots and securely hold the buss bars in place. Both a z buss bar and c buss bar are also disclosed that are capable of generating a sufficient amount of reactive force to create a secure contact with a tin oxide layer on the interior surface of an interior pane of glass in a warm window system to hold the buss bar in place and provide a large contact surface area to provide sufficient electrical contact with the tin oxide layer to prevent hot spots.

Abstract: Certain example embodiments of this invention relate to articles including anticondensation and/or low-E coatings that are exposed to an external environment, and/or methods of making the same. In certain example embodiments, the anticondensation and/or low-E coatings may be survivable in an outside environment. The coatings also may have a sufficiently low sheet resistance and hemispherical emissivity such that the glass surface is more likely to retain heat from the interior area, thereby reducing (and sometimes completely eliminating) the presence condensation thereon. The articles of certain example embodiments may be, for example, skylights, vehicle windows or windshields, IG units, VIG units, refrigerator/freezer doors, and/or the like.

Abstract: An improved vibration damping apparatus is provided for use with window structures, including windows used in vehicles, aircraft, and spacecraft. The vibration damping system includes at least two separate layers of solid material that are typically substantially clear at visible wavelengths, in which the two layers are spaced-apart by a predetermined distance to form a space or gap therebetween. This gap will be of a size and shape to enhance vibration damping when it is filled with a gaseous compound, such as air. The air-film vibration damping system created by the above structure can be applied to an external pane of a window structure, or to the interior pane of a window structure, or perhaps to both an exterior pane and an interior pane of the same window structure, if desired.

More particularly, certain example embodiments relate to techniques for protecting a pump-out tube of a VIG unit by providing a cap around the tube, with the cap and the tube being mechanically separated from one another. In certain example embodiments, the cap and an outer surface of the substrate in which the pump-out tube is located are connected to one another via an adhesive (e.g., a double-sided tape or other adhesive). The mechanical separation or isolation as between the cap and the tube may help protect the potentially fragile glass pump-out tube, in that forces imparted to the cap preferably would be buffered from and generally not transferred to the tube.
