Abstract: A polycarbonate such as a bisphenol-A homopolycarbonate containing a small amount of an aromatic bis(cyclic phosphate) such as 2,2'-[(1-methylethylidene)bis(4,1-phenyleneoxy-2,1-ethanediyloxy)]bis(5,5- dimethyl-2,2'-dioxo-1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinane) exhibits improved thermal stability.
Abstract: An olefin polymer composition containing an ultraviolet light stabilizer. The ultraviolet light stabilizer is a zerovalent nickel complex the organic portion of which is an ester of pentaerythritol phosphite.
Abstract: Polyphenylene ether resins and compositions of such resins in admixture with certain specific phosphite thermal oxidative stabilizers are described. These blends can be used with or without impact modifiers. As an additional benefit, the resins and compositions possess good melt flow properties which facilitates processing during molding.
Abstract: Polypropylene and other polyolefins are rendered flame retardant by the addition of a phosphonate ester having the following formula: ##STR1## wherein a 0, 1 or 2, b is 0, 1 or 2, c is 1, 2 or 3 and a+b+c is 3; R and R' are the same or dissimilar and are alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy, alkaryl, alkaryloxy, aralkyl, aryloyxalkoxy, or aralkoxy; wherein the alkyl portion of these groups may contain hydroxyl but no halogen and the aryl portion may contain chlorine bromine and hydroxyl groups; R.sup.2 is alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, or aryl; R.sup.3 is lower alkyl (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4); and a wetting agent penetrant. The presence of the penetrant promotes penetration of the retardant composition into the polypropylene. This fire retardant composition is particularly useful in polypropylene fibers and fabrics particularly where the fibers are woven into a matte.
Abstract: A composition containing a chelated titanium compound and an additive selected from the group consisting of (1) esters of thioalkanoic acids, (2) di-tertiary-butyl phenol containing compounds, (3) organic phosphites, and (4) mixtures of (2) and (3), retards the color change of the composition on storage. When this composition is used as the catalyst for one package, room temperature curing silicone elastomeric compositions of the type comprising a hydroxyl endblocked polydiorganosiloxane and a silane having an average of from 2.01 to 4 inclusive alkoxy radicals, the silicone elastomeric composition can be stored without substantial color formation. The improvement in reduced color change is useful in silicone elastomeric compositions which are clear or light colored.
Abstract: A group of diphosphonic acid tetra-esters and phosphonic or thiophosphonic acid O,O,O-triesters containing dioxaphosphorinane rings are useful as flame retardants for polymeric organic materials, particularly polyesters. The compounds, some of which are novel, are prepared by reaction of the corresponding phosphites with peroxy compounds or with sulphur.
