    Abstract: The disclosure relates to a composition, comprising: (a) at least one organohydrocarbyloxysilane represented by the formula wherein R1, R2 and R3 are independently hydrocarbyl groups containing from 1 to about 8 carbon atoms, and R4 is a hydrocarbyl group containing from 1 to about 22 carbon atoms; and (b) at least one polymer derived from styrene and/or at least one styrene derivative, and at least one comonomer comprising one or more of acrylic acid, (meth)acrylic acid, acrylonitrile, and/or at least one alkyl (meth)acrylate. In one embodiment, the composition further comprises (c) at least one fluid, the organohydrocarbyloxysilane (a) and polymer (b) being dispersed in the fluid. This composition may be used for treating concrete surfaces.

By laminating layers of such organic-inorganic composite materials having respective different compositions, the resulting laminate has a concentration gradient wherein the metal element content increases or decreases monotonously, or increases and decreases in succession, from one side to the other side of the laminate. The resulting refractive index varies opposite the metal element content. The material can be used for an optical waveguide or a light transmission structure.
