Abstract: A golf ball with relatively rigid inner core and soft intermediate layer is disclosed. The rigid inner core maintains the balls' high coefficient of restitution at high impact speeds, while the soft intermediate layer provides better feel for greenside play. The intermediate layer can be made from a highly neutralized polymer, which can be thermoset or thermoplastic. The highly neutralized polymer is foamed or otherwise has its specific gravity reduced. The intermediate layer can also be made from a castable reactive liquid polymer.

  • Patent number: 6949598
Abstract: The present invention relates to antimicrobial compositions, methods for the production of these compositions, and use of these compositions with medical devices, such as catheters, and implants. The compositions of the present invention advantageously provide varying release kinetics for the active ions in the compositions due to the different water solubilities of the ions, allowing antimicrobial release profiles to be tailored for a given application and providing for sustained antimicrobial activity over time. More particularly, the invention relates to polymer compositions containing colloids comprised of salts of one or more oligodynamic metal, such as silver. The process of the invention includes mixing a solution of one or more oligodynamic metal salts with a polymer solution or dispersion and precipitating a colloid of the salts by addition of other salts to the solution which react with some or all of the first metal salts.

Abstract: This invention relates to certain non-silicone vulcanized rubber articles that are made from at least a majority by weight of vulcanized styrene butadiene rubber that include silver-based compounds to provide highly desirable long-term antimicrobial characteristics within the cured rubber articles. Such articles are in either solid or blown (foam or sponge) state (or combinations of both in multilayered forms) and can be utilized in a variety of different applications. This invention encompasses the presence of non-sulfur-based curing systems and agents, such as peroxide curing, that permit vulcanization and do not irreversibly bind silver ions thereto, thereby resulting in long-term antimicrobial performance of the ultimate rubber article itself.

Abstract: The incorporation of nanosized metal particles into cyclodextrin-containing material leads to a “reactive” barrier material having excellent barrier properties. Also, it has been found that the presence of nanosized metal or metal alloy particles in a barrier material such as thermoplastic material, wherein said material comprises cyclodextrin derivatives, may be advantageous in achieving excellent barrier properties. The barrier material of the present invention may provide improved barrier resistance to a variety of permeants and/or impurities. The diffusion of volatile substances through the barrier material may be prevented by adding compatible derivatized cyclodextrin and nanosized metal particles to the material used.

Abstract: A process for producing a light guide body is disclosed. A polymer composition is prepared from a polymer and a solidifying agent. The solidifying agent has an operative temperature at which the solidifying agent is, operative to solidify the polymer, wherein the operative temperature is higher than or equal to the Tg of the polymer. The polymer composition is heated to melt at a temperature higher than Tg. The molten liquid of the polymer is molded and cooled so as to solidify at the operative temperature of the solidifying agent. Preferably, the molten liquid is cooled rapidly to a supercooled liquid state during the molding step. Due to the high expansion coefficient of the supercooled liquid of the polymer, there are changes in thickness and density in part of a molding from the molten liquid. The process produces a light guide body having concave or convex surfaces without using an expensive patterned mold.
