Abstract: This invention relates to fire-retardant polymer compositions, and preferably, but not exclusively, to fire-retardant polyamide compositions. It has now been found that the combination of a zinc borate and a divalent metal stannate, particularly zinc stannate, in halogen-containing polymeric compositions provides an increased fire-retardant effect, which is greater than that expected from the use of either zinc borate or the stannate alone. The combination also suppresses smoke production. Preferably the stannate is zinc stannate.

  • Patent number: 5077332
Abstract: A carefully balanced formulation of a chromate-free wash-primer to be applied to the surface of predetermined metals as a surface conditioner to inhibit the spread of corrosion and to act as a tie-coat. The formulation comprises a mixture of polyvinyl butyl resin and an anti-corrosive pigment selected from salts of borates and salts of phosphates. It does not contain toxic components and therefore does not pose hazards to either operators or the environment, upon application or during subsequent thermal operations or maintenance procedures on metal substrates. The physical and application properties of the product according to the present invention are comparable to those of conventional wash-primers, which are based on zinc tetraoxy chromate, polyvinyl butyral solution in organic solvents and phosphoric acid used as the catalyst for the system.

  • Patent number: 5075360
Abstract: A high speed corrugating adhesive having a carrier phase comprised of starch, modified starch or dextrin and polyvinyl alcohol in an aqueous emulsion wherein a cold water soluble, partially hydrolyzed, polyvinyl alcohol is used as a starting material. The polyvinyl alcohol is further hydrolyzed in situ to a degree of hydrolysis of more than about 95% by heating it in the presence of water, caustic, and starch, modified starch or dextrin. The carrier phase is admixed with a boron containing compound and a suspension of water and starch to prepare the corrugating adhesive for use in a corrugating machine.
