The method includes the steps of adding a silver ion-containing solution, such as silver nitrate solution, into WBPU emulsion to form a silver-containing PU emulsion by stirring, and dehydrating the silver-containing PU emulsion so as to obtain a WBPU containing nano-scaled silver particles having a uniform particle size and good dispersibility. The present invention provides a method that can be easily and speedily operated, and the silver-containing WBPU prepared according to the method of the present invention exhibits excellent antibacterial, bactericidal and deodorant effects but using a small amount of silver.

Abstract: Durable, impact-resistant structural coatings with dewetting and anti-icing properties are disclosed. The coatings possess a self-similar structure with two feature sizes that are tuned to affect the wetting of water and freezing of water on the surface. Dewetting and anti-icing performance is simultaneously achieved in a structural coating comprising multiple layers, with each layer including (a) a continuous matrix; (b) porous voids, dispersed within the matrix, to inhibit wetting of water; and (c) nanoparticles, on pore surfaces, that inhibit heterogeneous nucleation of water. These structural coatings utilize low-cost and lightweight materials that can be rapidly sprayed over large areas. If the surface is damaged during use, fresh material will expose a coating surface that is identical to that which was removed, for extended lifetime.

Abstract: A coating containing pigment particles and a polymer matrix is provided. The coating contains pigment particles that have a scattering coefficient with a linear or quasi-linear relationship to the pigment volume concentration of those pigment particles. The coating has improved hiding and is useful as a protective coating or an aesthetic coating on an underlying substrate. Also provided are compositions useful for preparing the coating, including covalently bonded composite particles and aqueous dispersions containing composite particles. The composite particles each contain a pigment particle with a plurality of polymer particles attached by adsorption on the outer surface of the pigment particle or by covalent bonding to the pigment particle through a coupling agent. Methods to prepare the composite particles and coating compositions containing the composite particles are also provided.

Abstract: An upright column is packed with particles of a first material so the particles touch one another and a network of voids is defined between the particles. The network will be substantially continuous. A second material is then introduced into the column so the second material penetrates the network and fills the voids. The mixture of first and second materials is then consolidated using heat to melt the first or second material, whilst the other one of the first or second material remains in a solid state and acts as a space holder. Thereafter, the material which acts as the space holder may be removed thereby to leave a substantially continuous porous network defined by the material which was melted. It is found that, by use of the method, a substantially continuous network of the material which is melted can be formed and that the other material can readily be removed and/or is more easily removed compared to if a mixture of first and second materials was formed prior to packing in a column or mould.

Abstract: Hydroxypolyamides, hydroxypolyamide products, and post-hydroxypolyamides are disclosed as gel forming agents. Hydroxypolyamides and post-hydroxypolyamides are prepared from known methods. Hydroxypolyamide products are produced from a modified polymerization procedure which utilizes strong base for deprotonation of ammonium salts from the esterification of stoichiometrically equivalent polyacid:polyamine salts. The hydroxypolyamide products are capable of gel formation at lower concentrations than hydroxypolyamides and post-hydroxypolyamides from the known methods of preparation, and are therefore superior gel forming agents.
