Abstract: The method disclosed includes: a step (I) of preparing a dispersion liquid (S) including an aluminum compound (A); a step (II) of mixing the dispersion liquid (S) and a predetermined phosphorus compound (B) so as to prepare a coating liquid (U); a step (III) of applying the coating liquid (U) onto the base (X) so as to form a precursor layer of the layer (Y); and a step (IV) of subjecting the precursor layer to heat treatment at a temperature of 110° C. or more so as to form the layer (Y). The aluminum compound (A) can be formed by adding an acid to a solution including an aluminate. The number of moles (NM) of aluminum atoms derived from the aluminum compound (A) and the number of moles (NP) of phosphorus atoms derived from the phosphorus compound (B) satisfy 0.8?(NM)/(NP)?4.5.

Abstract: An upright column is packed with particles of a first material so the particles touch one another and a network of voids is defined between the particles. The network will be substantially continuous. A second material is then introduced into the column so the second material penetrates the network and fills the voids. The mixture of first and second materials is then consolidated using heat to melt the first or second material, whilst the other one of the first or second material remains in a solid state and acts as a space holder. Thereafter, the material which acts as the space holder may be removed thereby to leave a substantially continuous porous network defined by the material which was melted. It is found that, by use of the method, a substantially continuous network of the material which is melted can be formed and that the other material can readily be removed and/or is more easily removed compared to if a mixture of first and second materials was formed prior to packing in a column or mould.

Hydroxypolyamides and post-hydroxypolyamides are prepared from known methods. Hydroxypolyamide products are produced from a modified polymerization procedure which utilizes strong base for deprotonation of ammonium salts from the esterification of stoichiometrically equivalent polyacid:polyamine salts. The hydroxypolyamide products are capable of gel formation at lower concentrations than hydroxypolyamides and post-hydroxypolyamides from the known methods of preparation, and are therefore superior gel forming agents.

Abstract: APs are made by binary condensation via base-to-acid or acid-to-base routes. In the base-to-acid route, an aluminum hydroxide slurry is added to phosphoric acid that reacts to produce an aluminum phosphate condensate. In the acid-to-base route, phosphoric acid is added to an aluminum hydroxide slurry that reacts to produce an aluminum phosphate condensate. In an alternative base-to-acid route, an acidic aluminum phosphate is first made by adding phosphoric acid to a first amount of aluminum hydroxide slurry, and such acidic aluminum phosphate is added to a remaining amount of aluminum hydroxide slurry to react and produce an aluminum phosphate condensate. The reactions can be controlled to form an in-situ layered aluminum phosphate. So-formed APs can be amorphous, crystalline, or a combination thereof, and have low oil absorption and surface area, making them particularly useful in such end-use applications as extender pigments in coating compositions, replacing up to 70 wt % of TiO2.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an aqueous coating composition comprising a treated latex polymer dispersion with less than about 50 ppm of unreacted monomers. The latex polymer dispersion can be treated by various means, including stripping and chasing, to remove unreacted monomers from the dispersion. Unreacted monomers significantly contribute to paint odor. In an innovative aspect of the present invention, the synergistic combination of the treated latex dispersion with pigments and other low or zero-VOC additives results in an aqueous coating composition with de minimis levels of volatile emissions, low odor, and paint performance comparable to premium latex paints.
