Abstract: Graphene oxide/polyamide compositions are provided, as are methods for making and using the compositions. The graphene oxide component of the compositions has a C:O ratio of between 3 and 20, and comprises 0.01% to 5.0% by weight of the composition. Typical polyamide components include specialty nylons such as PA-11 and PA-12. The compositions have reduced water absorption and enhanced durability relative to otherwise identical polyamide compositions lacking the graphene oxide component. The compositions are particularly useful, for example, in flexible pipes and tubes used for transporting oil and gas.

Abstract: Polyolefin block and graft copolymers comprised of two or more semicrystalline polyolefin blocks or grafts and one or more amorphous polyolefin blocks can be blended with a low molecular weight fluid diluent that preferentially locates within and swells the amorphous domains of the block or graft copolymer, while preserving the crystallinity of the semicrystalline block domains. After mechanical or thermomechanical processing, such compositions combine softness with high strength and high recoverable elasticity. Compositions are also disclosed whereby the diluent species is removed from the composition, either before or after the mechanical or thermomechanical processing, in order to create a strong elastic material with an ultra-low entanglement density within the amorphous domains.

Abstract: Polymer compositions containing a plasticized, impact modified polyoxymethylene composition that is compounded with a conductive filler composition are disclosed that are flexible while also exhibiting electrostatic dissipative (ESD) capabilities. The polymer compositions can be formed into shaped articles such as tubes, hoses, etc. for use in fuel transfer systems. The plasticized, impact modified polyoxymethylene composition includes a functionalized polyoxymethylene, a plasticizer, and an impact modifier. Meanwhile, the conductive filler composition includes a conductive filler and a high flow polyoxymethylene. The compositions can be compounded into a pellet product which can then be formed into a shaped article that complies with the ESD capabilities required by SAE J1645.

Abstract: The present invention relates to advanced flame/fire retardant compositions for fabric, upholstery, carpet, barrier, automotive, building construction, communication, and consumer electronics applications. The flame retardant composition comprises: about 5-25 wt. % hydrogenated styrenic block copolymer, about 6-40 wt. % polyolefin, about 50-80 wt. % inorganic flame retardant, about 0-5 wt. % coating, about 0-5 wt. % functionalized styrenic block copolymer, about 0-7 wt. % agri-derived heat resistant liquid, about 0.05-1.0 wt. % antioxidant, and about 0-7 wt. % optional additives such as metal deactivator, colorant, filler, and/or lubricants, wherein said composition totals 100 wt. %. An article made from the flame retardant composition, such as film, fiber, cable, and wire insulation meets various European and U.S. standards. The flame retardant compositions possess a good balance of tensile strength, elongation, flame resistance, and processability that has previously been unobtainable.

  • Patent number: 8697213
Abstract: A photodegradable plastic is described, comprising cellulose esters and also, if appropriate, additives. A particular characterizing feature of this photodegradable plastic is that it comprises a dispersed photocatalytic carbon-modified titanium dioxide. Comparative experiments show that this photodegradable plastic exhibits a surprisingly high increase in photocatalytic degradability when compared with products in which a conventional or other modified titanium dioxide is used. This improvement is apparent in particular in use of the photodegradable plastic according to the invention when it is further processed to give moldings. The photodegradable plastic can, for example, first be further processed to give a filter tow. This can be used to produce filter rods, and these can then be used to produce filter plugs for filter-tip cigarettes.
