Abstract: A novel filler treatment comprising the preparation of swollen starch-latex compositions, prepared in the presence or absence of co-additives, and the addition of the said composition to a filler suspension, has been developed. Use of the treated filler during papermaking improves filler retention and produces filled papers where addition of the filler has only a minimal negative effect on strength properties. The swollen starch-latex compositions can be prepared in a batch or jet cooker, or by mixing with hot water under controlled conditions (i.e., temperature, pH, mixing, mixing time) in order to make the starch granules swell sufficiently to improve their properties as a filler additive but avoiding excess swelling leading to their rupture. The swollen starch-latex composition is then rapidly mixed with the filler slurry, preferably in a static mixer, and added to the papermaking furnish at a point prior to the headbox of the paper machine.

Abstract: A film that is both elastic and water-sensitive (e.g., water-soluble, water-dispersible, etc.) in that it loses its integrity over time in the presence of water is provided. To achieve these dual attributes, the film contains an olefinic elastomer and a water-soluble polymer. Although these polymers are normally chemically incompatible due to their different polarities, the present inventors have discovered that phase separation may be minimized by selectively controlling certain aspects of the film, such as the nature of the polyolefin, water-soluble polymer, and other film components, the relative amount of the film components, and so forth. For example, certain water-soluble polymers may be selected that have a low molecular weight and viscosity to enhance their melt compatibility with nonpolar polyolefins. This, in turn, may result in a film that is generally free of separate phases, which would otherwise limit the ability of the water-soluble polymer to contact water and disperse.

Abstract: Granular starch is added to a polymer in order to decrease the cost of the polymer derivative. Use of granular starch also makes the derivative more biodegradable. Abstract: A shaped article (e.g., a porous material, and a spherical particle) comprising (A) a resin component is produced by kneading the resin component (A) (e.g., a thermoplastic resin) and a water-soluble auxiliary component (B) to prepare a dispersed composition, and eluting the auxiliary component (B) from the dispersed composition. The auxiliary component (B) may comprise 100 parts by weight of an oligosaccharide (B1) and 0.5 to 100 parts by weight of a water-soluble plasticizing component (B2) for plasticizing the oligosaccharide. The oligosaccharide (B1) may comprise a tetrasaccharide. The plasticizing component (B2) may comprise a saccharide or a sugar alcohol. Use of the dispersed composition ensures to form a shaped article having a given shape industrially with advantage even in the case of using a wide variety of resin components.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to polymeric materials (e.g., coatings) comprising biodegradable copolymers and implantable devices (e.g., drug-delivery stents) formed of such materials. The biodegradable copolymers are derived from at least two relatively polar monomers and at least one relatively nonpolar monomer. Incorporation of at least one relatively nonpolar monomer into the copolymer improves controlled release of a hydrophobic drug from the polymeric material by increasing the copolymer's miscibility with and permeability to the hydrophobic drug. The polymeric materials can also contain at least one biocompatible moiety, at least one non-fouling moiety, at least one biobeneficial material, at least one bioactive agent, or a combination thereof. The polymeric materials are designed to improve the mechanical, physical and biological properties of implantable devices formed thereof.
