Polyvinyl Alcohol Or Modified Form Thereof Patents (Class 524/503)
  • Publication number: 20100324198
Abstract: Provided is a polyvinyl alcohol-based dispersion stabilizer used for suspension polymerization of a vinyl compound. When this dispersion stabilizer is used, it reduces the formation of coarse particles and allows the obtained vinyl polymer to have a sharp particle size distribution, and reduces the amount of scale deposited on a polymerization vessel more than ever before. Also provided is a method of producing this dispersion stabilizer. This dispersion stabilizer is composed of a carbon monoxide-vinyl alcohol copolymer including a constitutional unit derived from carbon monoxide (a CO unit) and a vinyl alcohol unit, and has a content of the CO unit of 0.01 to 8 mol %, a viscosity-average degree of polymerization of 200 to 3500, and a saponification degree of 60 to 90 mol %.

Abstract: A film that is both elastic and water-sensitive (e.g., water-soluble, water-dispersible, etc.) in that it loses its integrity over time in the presence of water is provided. To achieve these dual attributes, the film contains an olefinic elastomer and a water-soluble polymer. Although these polymers are normally chemically incompatible due to their different polarities, the present inventors have discovered that phase separation may be minimized by selectively controlling certain aspects of the film, such as the nature of the polyolefin, water-soluble polymer, and other film components, the relative amount of the film components, and so forth. For example, certain water-soluble polymers may be selected that have a low molecular weight and viscosity to enhance their melt compatibility with nonpolar polyolefins. This, in turn, may result in a film that is generally free of separate phases, which would otherwise limit the ability of the water-soluble polymer to contact water and disperse.

  • Patent number: RE40941
Abstract: The present invention includes processes and resulting structures for producing a modified polymer having interconnecting channels. The interconnecting channels act as controlled transmission passages through the polymer. A hydrophilic agent is blended into the polymer so that it is distributed within the polymer. In one embodiment, a releasing material is blended into the polymer so that the releasing material is distributed within the product. The product is solidified so that the hydrophilic agent forms passages in the product through which a desired composition is communicable to the releasing material that is entrained within the product. The solidified product may be used to form a desired shaped article such as plug type inserts and liners for closed containers, or it may be formed into a film, sheet, bead or pellet.
