  • Publication number: 20120279426
Abstract: The invention relates to compositions and methods for modifying cementitious materials such as by reducing setting time. Polymer compositions of the invention are derived by polyetherifying mono-glycerols, optionally with alkylene glycols, to obtain polyglycerol homopolymers or copolymers, and then carboxylating the obtained polyglycerol homopolymers and/or copolymers with an organic acid having at least two carboxylic functionalities. The set retardation effect of the carboxylated-carboxylic polyglycerol polymer compositions in cementitious materials is reduced is compared to polyglycerol polymer not having the carboxylated-carboxylic groups, while its water reducing ability is maintained without loss of early compressive strength. Cementitious compositions and methods involving the carboxylated-carboxylic polyglycerol are also covered by the invention.

Abstract: The present invention includes methods relating to the setting of fluids or slurries in a wellbore. In one embodiment, a method of isolating a portion a wellbore by preparing a sealant composition comprising a fluid component and a polymeric additive component, placing the sealant composition into a wellbore and subjecting the sealant composition to ionizing radiation. The ionizing radiation can cause bonding between polymeric additive components and create a polymer matrix within the sealant composition that increases the mechanical strength of the sealant composition.

Abstract: A water redispersible polymer powder is produced by drying an aqueous mixture of a carboxylated styrene butadiene polymer and a colloidal stabilizer which includes a polyvinyl alcohol modified with an alkyl end chain. The alkyl modified polyvinyl alcohol provides excellent redispersibility of the redispersible polymer powder without adversely affecting spray drying. Cement compositions such as mortars, which contain the redispersible polymer powder with the alkyl modified polyvinyl alcohol exhibit unexpectedly superior stability and an unexpectedly lower rate of mortar viscosity buildup which is advantageous for workability or troweling.
