  • Patent number: 6683132
Abstract: Self-crosslinking aqueous coating compositions are disclosed comprising a water-dispersible alkyd having both sulfonate and acetoacetate functionality, a suitable bi- or poly-functional primary amine, and a monofunctional primary or cycloaliphatic secondary amine. The crosslinking of the composition includes oxidative curing via the fatty acid segments of the alkyd, and crosslinking via reaction between the acetoacetate groups of the alkyd and the primary amine groups of the polyfunctional amine. The aqueous alkyd systems disclosed do not require the presence of amines for the purpose of dispersing the alkyds, while exhibiting superior tack-free and through-dry times when used in coating compositions. Performance levels are achieved that heretofore had required increases in molecular weight and Tg, with a concomitant increase in VOC levels. Also disclosed are methods of making the inventive compositions.

  • Patent number: 6657044
Abstract: An improved process for the polymerization of polytrimethylene terephthalate by esterification of terephthalic acid or dimethylterephthalate with 1,3-propanediol (PDO), precondensation of the esterification product to produce a precondensation product, and polycondensation of the precondensation product to produce polytrimethylene terephthalate wherein excess PDO is removed from the esterification and/or polycondensation stages and PDO vapor is separated from the high boiling fraction (solid byproduct). The improvement comprises: (a) heating the solid byproduct in the presence of about 5 ppm to about 5000 ppm, based on metal, of a metal catalyst selected from the group consisting of one or more 3rd, 4th, or 5th row metal compounds from Groups 3-12 and Groups 14-15 of the Periodic Table (IUPAC 1989) at a temperature of from about 100° C. to about 240° C.

  • Patent number: 6620904
Abstract: Applicant has discovered processes for preparing polyglycerols and polyglycerol esters in high yield and with minimal formation of cyclic polyglycerols and cyclic polyglycerol esters. Furthermore, the processes of this invention produce a high proportion of linear polyglycerols and polyglycerol esters. The linear polyglycerols have very desirable physical characteristics, including a clear appearance at melt, a desirable Gardner color, a mild odor, and a bland taste. The polyglycerols and polyglycerol esters prepared by the method of the present invention are well suited for use as cosmetic and food additives. Since few, if any, cyclic polyglycerols and polyglycerol esters are formed by the processes of this invention, costly and time consuming distillation steps to remove such by-products are not needed.
