Hydrocarbon Monomer Only Patents (Class 524/836)
  • Patent number: 4421660
Abstract: Colloidal size particles of an inorganic solid such as magnetic iron oxide or titanium dioxide are encapsulated in a hydrophobic addition polymer such as a polymer of styrene by a polymerization process wherein a water-immiscible (hydrophobic) monomer is dispersed in an aqueous colloidal dispersion of the inorganic particles and subjected to conditions of emulsion polymerization. The resulting encapsulated particles are usefully employed as catalysts, toners, pigments and diagnostic latexes that have magnetic characteristics.

  • Patent number: 4401788
Abstract: An emulsion polymerized vinylidene chloride copolymer latex having polymerized therein vinylidene chloride and one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers copolymerizable therewith. The latex contains both an anionic and a nonionic surfactant. The latex remains stable following addition of about 2 percent by weight of a cationic antistatic agent on a polymer solids basis.

  • Patent number: 4394475
Abstract: Sized glass fiber strands are provided that have improved slip/flow characteristics. This improved characteristic is achieved by sizing glass fibers with an aqueous sizing composition having one or more nonstarch film forming polymers, one or more coupling agents, one or more lubricants or a mixture thereof, polyethylene-containing polymer with limited branching and water. The aqueous sizing composition can also have a wax having a melting point greater than 50.degree. C. where the total amount of the polyethylene polymer and wax is not greater than about 15 weight percent of the aqueous sizing composition.

  • Patent number: 4351752
Abstract: A sizing composition and method of preparing sized glass fiber strand is provided to produce sized glass fiber strand that has reduced tackiness. The sizing composition has a low molecular weight liquid polymer selected from the group consisting of styrene-butadiene copolymer, acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer or hydroxy or carboxy derivatives of said copolymers, epoxy resins, polyester resins, or polyurethane resins that are free radically curable; and a free radical precurser selected from the group consisting of peroxides, hydroperoxides in an amount in the range of about 0.2 to 5 parts per hundred parts of liquid polymer in said sizing composition; or the said liquid polymer that can be treated with radiation to produce an equivalent amount of free radicals.

  • Patent number: 4336173
Abstract: The invention provides a process for preparing an aqueous emulsion or dispersion of a partly water-soluble material, and optionally further conversion of the prepared dispersion or emulsion to a polymer dispersion when the partly water-soluble material is a polymerizable monomer. In a first step a dispersion of polymer particles is prepared containing one or more materials having a very low solubility in water, then in a second step there is added the partly water-soluble material which diffuses into the particles from the first step, and then, if the partly water-soluble material is a polymerizable monomer, polymerization may be effected.
