Patent number: 6258891Abstract: This invention is a solventless process for anionically polymerizing polysiloxane polymers. No volatile hydrocarbon solvent is used. A cyclic siloxane monomer and any comonomer are introduced into a molten polymer phase of a low molecular weight polymer that has a melting point within the polymerization temperature range for the cyclic siloxanes and the comonomer, for example, 30 to 80° C. which is the melting point range for polyethylene wax which is preferred. A non-volatile hydrocarbon oil with a melting point in this range may also be used, especially if a final polymer containing oil is desired. The cyclic siloxane monomer is anionically polymerized in the molten polymer phase or the oil at 30 to 150° C. Ethylene and styrene are preferred comonomers. The low molecular polymer or non-volatile oil is not separated from the polysiloxane after termination of the polymerization.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 1999Date of Patent: July 10, 2001Assignee: Shell Oil CompanyInventor: Ronald James Hoxmeier

Patent number: 5939478Abstract: The viscosity of a solvent is modified by thickening the solvent with a silicone latex. A silicone latex having a plurality of crosslinked polysiloxane particles is first prepared by mixing the siloxane polymer, a surfactant, and water; emulsifying the mixture to a gel phase; diluting the emulsion with water; adding a cure package (i.e., a catalyst, a crosslinker, or both, or a self catalytic crosslinker); and then without removing the water from the latex and after the particles of siloxane polymer in the latex have been cured, mixing the latex and solvent to thicken the solvent, forming viscous liquids, gels, and pastes. Water in the latex thickened solvent composition can be stabilized by adding a silicone polyether during mixing of the latex and the solvent.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 1997Date of Patent: August 17, 1999Assignee: Dow Corning CorporationInventors: James Anderson Beck, Vicky Sue Cobb, Cassie Emelia Cuthbert, Eric Jude Joffre, Virginia Kay O'Neil, Burt Michael Wrolson

Patent number: 5908891Abstract: The present invention relates to a dispersible silicone composition comprising (I) a silicone composition prepared by reacting (i) a polyorganosiloxane, (ii) a silicon compound, optionally (iii) a finely divided filler, and (iv) a catalytic amount of a compound for promoting the reaction of the other components and (II) mineral oil. The mineral oil is effective as a dispersing agent for the silicone composition (I). The mineral oil-containing compositions are easier to handle, and produce less waste and its dispersion into mineral oil based formulations is more efficient.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 1996Date of Patent: June 1, 1999Assignee: Dow Corning CorporationInventors: Kenneth Christopher Fey, James Habermehl
