  • Patent number: 4910258
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a graft polymerization method to form a fluorine-containing graft copolymer which is useful as a soft and flexible fluororesin intermediate between fluororubbers and crystalline fluororesins. The graft copolymer is formed by polymerizing a fluorine-containing crystalline polymer, e.g. copolymer of CTFE and ethylene, in water in the presence of a reducing agent and a fluorine-containing elastomeric copolymer which comprises peroxy groups and is dispersed in the water to become the "trunk" of the graft copolymer. For example, the elastomeric copolymer is of vinylidene fluoride, CTFE and t-butyl peroxyallylcarbonate. An example of the reducing agent is sodium bisulfite, and optionally and additionally a source of a reducing metal ion such as ferric chloride may be used. This graft polymerization reaction can be carried out at a relatively low temperature, viz. at 20.degree.-50.degree. C.

  • Patent number: 4806581
Abstract: Graft polymers are prepared by reacting an ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable monomer with a polymer of an olefin of 2 to about 8 carbon atoms in a process wherein the olefin polymer is substantially insoluble in the monomer but is capable of absorbing the monomer. In a preferred aspect, a vinyl halide polyolefin graft polymer is produced by reacting a solid polyolefin particle with a vinyl halide monomer in which the polyolefin is substantially insoluble, but is capable of absorbing the monomer. The solid particles can be contacted with the monomer in one step or in stages. When the stage-wise reaction is continued until the proportion of polyolefin in the polymer product is about 2 to about 20 weight percent, the resulting product can be formed to a transparent or translucent article.

  • Patent number: 4762891
Abstract: A scorch-resistant, curable, fluorinated elastomer gum composition is provided. A free-radically curable, fluorinated elastomer gum is compounded with an aliphatically unsaturated, diorganosulfur compound in which at least one of the organo moieties contains a .beta.,.gamma.-aliphatically unsaturated moiety having at least one hydrogen atom bonded to the .alpha. carbon atom of said moiety, said carbon atom being bonded to a sulfur atom of the compound. The diorganosulfur compound reduces the tendency of the compounded fluorinated elastomer gum to scorch, i.e. begin curing prematurely, in the presence of a free-radical curing agent during compounding and shaping of the gum at elevated temperatures below the intended cure temperature. Specific examples of said compounds include 2,5-dihydrothiophene-1,1-dioxide, 2,5-dihydrothiophene-1-oxide, and diallylsulfide.
