  • Patent number: 7842759
Abstract: Scorch is inhibited during the free-radical crosslinking of a crosslinkable polymer, e.g., an EPDM, by incorporating into the polymer before melt processing and crosslinking a scorch inhibiting amount of a derivative, preferably an ether, ester or urethane derivative, of a TEMPO compound, e.g., 4-hydroxy-tetrahydrocarbylpiperidin-1-oxyl. The scorch inhibitors of this invention perform as well, if not better, than their 4-hydroxy-tetrahydrocarbylpiperidin-1-oxyl counterparts in similar polymer compositions and under similar conditions in terms of scorch inhibition and ultimate degree of crosslinking, but exhibit less volatility and less migration within the polymer composition.

  • Patent number: 7119149
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a high expansion two-component structural foam that expands to about twice its original volume while maintaining good cell structure. The foam of the present invention is based on epoxy resins. Each component of the foam system exhibits storage stability, e.g., no phase separation, yet reacts when combined to provide a cured material having exceptionally good compression strength and modulus. The blowing system used to prepare the foam produces a foam which is uniform in appearance and is essentially free of the large voids often found in conventional two-part thermosettable compositions, even when a relatively large mass is utilized.

  • Patent number: 6852803
Abstract: A polymer dispersant for pigments based on a graft copolymer which contains a new type of urea functional group as the pigment anchoring group. The urea groups are attached to the graft copolymer by a convenient method which involves reaction of hydroxyl functional groups built in the graft copolymer with a diisocyanate that is capped at one end with ammonia or a primary or secondary amine. The reaction is convenient and clean. Substantial crosslinking or gelling of the polymer can be easily avoided by judicious selection of appropriate ingredients and processing conditions. These materials are effective in dispersing and stabilizing a wide range of pigments in solvent based systems and are particularly useful in forming pigment dispersions that are used in a variety of solvent borne coating compositions for automobiles and trucks, where they provide improved efficiency of pigment use, lower paint viscosity, and reduced emission of volatile organic solvent.
