Patent number: 5631316Abstract: Vulcanizable tire innerliner compositions are described which are essentially free of halogen atoms or contain a reduced halogen content. The innerliners contain a saturated elastomeric interpolymer of a C.sub.4 -C.sub.7 isomonoolefin, e.g., isobutylene and a para-alkylstyrene e.g., para-methylstyrene, which contains benzylic ester functionality having the structure: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are independently selected from hydrogen or C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl, and R.sub.4 is selected from hydrogen, C.sub.1, to C.sub.28 alkyl, aryl or C.sub.2 to C.sub.28 alkenyl.Innerliners of the invention provide excellent impermeability to air, heat aging properties and good adhesion to tire carcass stock required for tire innerliners, and are also essentially free of halogen or contain low halogen content thereby reducing environmental concerns occasioned by the incineration of used tires.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: May 20, 1997Assignee: Exxon Chemical Patents Inc.Inventors: Bernard J. Patent number: 5627239Abstract: Disclosed is a process for esterifying and/or transesterifying a polymer having a polyethylenic backbone and pendant acid and/or ester moieties comprising contacting a melt of the polymer with a transesterifying compound so that the polymer undergoes esterification and/or transesterification but not alcoholysis. The esterified or transesterified polymer also has pendant ester moieties which differ in kind and/or number from the unreacted polymer. In one embodiment, the process also comprises adding an amount of a transition metal salt that is effective to promote oxygen scavenging. Also in a further embodiment, the process comprises irradiating the transesterified polymer with actinic radiation to reduce the induction period before oxygen scavenging commences. Also disclosed are compositions comprising a component which comprises an ethylenic or polyethylenic backbone and a pendant or terminal moiety comprising a benzylic, allylic, or ether-containing radical.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: May 6, 1997Assignee: Chevron Chemical CompanyInventors: Ta Y.
